Hello team!
A few weeks ago I wrote an article about how I was able to earn a $100 gift card by playing games through Mistplay. One of the games I mentioned there was Mech Arena and I've not stopped playing it since. It's simple, fair, and I really enjoy it. I thought today might be a nice time to talk about why.
Visual clutter ahoy!
Mech Arena official communication has this to say.
Jump into hard-hitting online gameplay with players from across the world and compete in multiplayer TPS robot combat. With dozens of mechs and a vast arsenal of weapons!
Truth be told the only reason I tried this game was to earn some Mistplay credits but, once I had played a few rounds I was very quickly hooked by the crisp clear visuals, simplicity of play, and large pool of mechs and weapons.
When you log into a game you are greeted with a very simple view and button scheme that looks something like this.
What we have here is a d-pad, firing buttons for each arm, and a special ability button. Each mech has it's own special ability and that is a big part of what makes them feel unique. SCORPIOUS, the mech in the above image, has a small shoulder mounted tracking missile pod he can use to pepper shots at enemy mechs.
Each mech has stats like speed, power, and health. More power means bigger weapons and, as you have two arm slots, you can mix and match your weapons as you see fit. Each mech can be further pumped up with a pilot who will biff it's stats if the mech and pilot share a specialty.
Ready? Steady. GO!
There are not a huge variety of game modes but everything you would expect is present. You've got Free-For-All, 5v5 deathmatch, 2v2 deathmatch, control point capture, and a rotating single-player challenge mode. By playing these modes you earn credits, A-coins, and a variety of other types of currency by landing kills, completing Achievements, winning matches, and completing quests.
Ideally, when you are leaving a match you want to be greeted with something like this showing all the quests you've made progress on.
Quests are the lifeblood of Mech Arena
Now, this is a free-to-play mobile game and unfortunately those tend to be full of calls to purchase items. Mech Arena is playing the normal game plan here and it's a little outrageous to be met with 10 different package offers as soon as you log in. Whenever I see this my immediate first worry is that the game is Pay2Win. I am happy to report that, after months of playing Mech Arena, I do not believe this is a Pay2Win game.
Full disclosure, I have likely spent ~$15 on various packages in this game. I have always waited for packages that were 85%+ off and contained exactingly what I was finding myself missing. Even with that disclosed, I have reached the highest league of competitive play and believe I could have done so without any spending.
The truth of the matter here is if you play this game with organization, skill, and perseverance you'll very quickly acquire anything you really need due to the ample daily and weekly quests.
At any point you have 5-10 different events running, each withg their own quests and rewards. The Daily and Weekly quests don't change so you will always be chasing simple metrics like kills, assists, point captures, and wins but, in addition to that, there will be other quests. These quests are often related to specific themes like weapon types, event types, or encouraging you to upgrade your items. There are also league rewards for finishing weeks of play and moving up to better leagues.
As everything in the game can be purchased with the rewards from these quests there is nothing that is out of your reach.
Id really love to play with some of you! Please give Mech Arena a try if this sounds fun to you and, if you enjoy it, please share your usernames in the comments so we can team up! If you have any questions please ask, iot would be my pleasure to assist however possible.
