Weekly Wargaming Report
Greetings readers! Welcome to the next installment of the Weekly Wargaming Report. This is an article I write roughly weekly that goes over all the work I've been doing related to crafting and playing wargames. As these games can take a ton of time, attention, and funds (without careful planning) these articles have been popular in helping non-Wargamers understand the hobby. I love that!
This Weeks Crafts
Last week I finished my largest build yet in the Ork Battlewagon. Not only did this get built with as many extra options as possible but I spent the time magnetizing the different options so I can always arrange the 'wagon as I see fit. This took a lot of extra time but, in the end, I'm extremely happy with the result.
The only item that is not removable is the deff-roller. I don't think I would ever want to run this thing without that thing. This has much more to do with the 'rule of cool' than any rules considerations. The magnetization of all the weapons took some time but there are some great guides to follow and honestly, it was easy.
Beyond that I had a custom order from Etsy come in with a big group of MegaNobz just in time for the nerf. It's always a shame when your favorite unit gets nerfed into the ground but it has an extra sting when you just bought a bunch of them. Oh well, such is life.
I am currently building a Redemptor Dreadnaught for my Iron hands force. Thus far I've only completed the chassis. My plan is to build the chassis, each arm, and the legs separately before assembling them together to create a good pose. I'll be building two of these for my army so it's important to me that both look good and unique.
This Weeks Game
This weeks game was a doozey! I decided to field a Dread Mob Ork list focused on large armor and a few ranged units to make use of the stratagems Dread Mob grants me access to. Here is my list:
Upon arrival at the store I met up with Joe, a really nice player with a bit more experience than I. I explained my skill level and asked if he would be up for a 'teaching game' and he agreed. To face my Orks Joe fielded a Raven Guard list. I've never faced the Raven Guard so this made me really excited. The Raven Guard are the Space Marine chapter that focuses on stealth and, if I was going to want to hit them, I was going to need to get closer than normal. No problem! Orks don't mind getting up close and personal!
The battle started how they often seem to. We spend 20 minutes deploying and then I find out my opponent has an ability that lets them move everything around undoing any planning I had done. I really need to start asking my opponents if their army has these kinds of skills in the future but this is not worth getting salty over.
My opponent put some scout and sniper squads deep in the midfield and started pushing a very large hovertank towards the middle objective. I pushed my army forward so they could form a wall of bodies to cover my gretchin (little goblin duded) holding two objectives and charged my armor towards the midfield.
Again, Krata-Face (my kustom built Gorkanaught) was completely out of position on the far right flank.
But he could see enough to start peppering the field with shots from his Deffstorm Mega Shoota and multiple rockets.
My Lootas took a position on the left flank and started exchanging fire with the enemy snipers. The Battlewagon charged the Hovertank and bashed it with it's rolla while blasting away with it's Kill-Kannon. The load of boyz in a trukk charged the scouts and were promptly exploded by the tank and burned alive within it. It was awesome.
Friends, the battle was fierce! My tactical errors were forgiven by some really bad rolls by my opponent. They repeatedly rolled 1's on weapons with d6 attacks and missed attacks that, statistically, they should have made. Sometimes it really do be that way. However, in the end, Joes experience was showing and I called the battle as a psudo-draw leaning heavily in his favor.
As always, we spent 30 minutes after the game talking about how it went and asking my opponents for advice. This game we had another player watching and offering some input and that was extremely helpful. All and all this post-match breakdown is one of my favorite pasts of play.
Closing Thoughts
Here is what I've learned:
Gorkanaught - Miniguns want to shoot low armor and rockets want to shoot high armor. I was confused about this and now have things straight.
Gorkanaught - At one point Gorka was charged and almost destroyed the unit who attacked him with a single sweep of his claw. I need to be using this more. Also, Gorka took fire the whole game and was left standing. He can take the fire and I need to stop overprotecting him.
Stormboyz - Great for grabbing objectives but thats just not really how I play. I think the points I'm spending on Stormboyz can be spent better elseware.
Lootas - Orks are really bad at shooting and I'm tired of trying to make it work just because some people have won tournaments with similar lists.
BattleWagon - Is awesome and the 2 weeks spent building it were very worth it.
Thanks for reading friends. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to make these articles more interesting for you. Until we meet again, take care of each other out there!
