When describing an experience as overwhelmingly original and as incredibly brilliant as Bioshock, where would you start to talk? When every aspect of a game has been so creatively conceived, meticulously designed and produced with as much love as it has been here.
Ken Levine's work enters through the eyes because of its majestic created world and coupled with the most compelling narrative possible. We won't have hundreds of cinematics that cut the pace of the video game to know everything about Rapture, since the narrative unfolds in the most natural and effective way possible, which has moments where the setting speaks incredibly for itself.
⚔️History
The story of BioShock is one of the best we have seen to date. The concept, the characters, the rhythm, the genuinely powerful twists are worthy of a feature film. However, unlike a film, the experience here is always personal: a search for discovery, a search for identity. The most remarkable thing is that, although the answers you want exist, the game doesn't give them away easily. You can neglect a particular audio tape or a message scratched on the wall, and lose a whole layer of the plot. The more time you spend on BioShock, the more it will reward you.
A plane plummets into the black Atlantic Ocean around a lonely lighthouse. The sequence is heartbreaking, but ironically, it may be the last normal thing that happens to you in BioShock. For the next 20-25 hours, you will be immersed in a haunted underwater world, a formerly utopian metropolis called Rapture where every ideal has been twisted and every dream destroyed.
In the 1940s, a megalomaniac named Andrew Ryan had a dream. A city where man could develop without the limits that politics and religion have imposed on him for millennia. A city where capitalism could roam freely and where science had no moral boundaries. That city was called Rapture and was built under water, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, to be the new home of many dreamers willing to abandon everything to embark on this exciting utopia but the citizens who came to this city in search of freedom now wander its streets like monsters, the mutated products of science without restrictions. Entrepreneurs who came in search of opportunity resorted to war, ruining the fragile infrastructure. The most innocent girls in the population are forced to commit the most unthinkable acts. And Rapture's founder, Andrew Ryan, would rather see his creation fall apart than see it saved.
🎮Gameplay
The aspect where the video game grows the most is in its playability. BioShock is technically a Shooter but that classification does not do justice to the diverse hybrid of combat, strategy, role-playing and puzzle-solving. Enemies can be defeated in an almost infinite number of ways, from the violently direct to the defensively strategic. The decision is always yours, Gunplay rises to a new level. In the right hand you will have your weapons while in the left hand you will find the various plasmids (powers) that apart from being useful for solving puzzles, are also really effective as an attack, complementing the use of weapons. There are different types of plasmids and their use both to solve puzzles (interaction with the stage) and to attack enemies is really exciting, and feeding on an energy bar (EVE) that we will fill with syringes and other elements such as coffee, tobacco and alcohol (also affect health). In the use of these items there are curious details such as the fact that tobacco recovers our EVE but damages our health, or that alcohol makes us look blurry for a few moments. Small details of classic game.
The plasmids, as we said, will also be useful to solve puzzles, some of them necessary to continue advancing and others to access a secondary area that will bring us some benefit. This is where the distribution of powers by slots comes into play, and the non-linear nature of certain parts of the game. While the goal is clear, we'll have to explore and try things out to get what we need and keep moving forward. In this sense the game helps us a lot by including a map that we can consult at any time and the scenario is full of signs that tell us, in an integrated way, not intrusive or shameless, where to go and where each area is. The dark and shadowy nature of most Rapture scenarios makes it easy to become disoriented at times, but the map and visual cues will quickly get us out of trouble. But BioShock encourages thinking above all else, giving you many tools to fight smarter. You can combine plasmids for creative attacks. You can set traps using proximity mines and trip wires. You can buy special ammunition for incineration or electrification for your weapons. You can hack and rewire a security bot to join your side. You can conjure up a decoy to distract your enemies. You can enrage enemies to rip out their throats instead of your own. You can even hypnotize the game's iconic bad guy, Big Daddy, to protect you instead of the Little Sisters. The list goes on and on...
It's a game that combines action with exploration and role-playing elements, but the key to all this is that it does so in a way that is neither inaccessible to less experienced players, nor profound for fans of System Shock or similar games, such as Deus Ex. Not only does it have a good combat system and an exceptional design of the levels, full of secrets and small details, open enough to leave the player free, but also the Rapture setting, full of details, the story that is transmitted little by little, with the action of the game itself, make Bioshock a rounded experience, a game at the same time open to all players but fully satisfying for the fan of the genre in particular.
And yet, in a way, there's more, as the game also includes relatively robust RPG-style character development. With Adam, the genetic substance stolen from the murdered Little Sisters, special skills (from harder armour to quieter steps) and enhanced plasmids can be acquired. His decisions, therefore, affect not only his skill progression, but also his morality ... and the ending he sees.
🖼️Graphics
Rapture's artistic design is among the most enviable aspects possible for those developers who have wanted to emulate something of such magnitude. Not only is it perfectly suited to the story that is unfolding, but the gameplay expresses that ambiance to the fullest. The level design it features is very extensive, glorious and sinister to witness, having also the possibility of returning us from our own steps. It is also worth adding the fact that it manages to be sufficiently varied during the 20 hours or more that it has its history mode. The enemies can be perfectly differentiated not only through their behavior but also by their unpleasant appearances.
As soon as we get out of the bathyscaphe that takes us to Rapture we start to appreciate the countless details that populate the city. From the windows of the buildings we can appreciate an immense city, devastated by a civil war that has ended the order and peace that reigned there. Objects fall from the balconies of the buildings, neon lights turn on and off due to electrical failures, sea beasts swim among the remains of bridges and statues. Schools of fish swim by the windows. Giant sequoias grow on the ocean floor in sealed air tubes. A glowing underwater volcano provides heat and light. The concept of an underwater society is strange, but BioShock sells it, hits the spot. The city is alive.
If we start talking about the playing fields, the compliments fall short no matter what we say. Starting with the smooth movements and animations, following with the details of all the furniture, walls and objects, continuing with impressive textures and lighting, and ending with an excellent representation of the fluids. Everything in Bioshock is related to water. Rapture, an underwater city, suffers after the civil war from countless leaks, holes in walls, burst pipes or objects crashing into the walls that cause massive water inflows. Rare is the cabin that does not have an extraordinarily real looking puddle.
Equally outstanding are the models of the enemies and characters. Rich in polygons, with winding textures and original designs. From the little Sisters to the big Daddies, all models are excellent, with no spikes, no jagged edges, and no plastic effect. The animations are very elaborate, and although the ordinary enemies are not notable for their movements, seeing a Big Daddy in action is very impressive. Also, the variety of actions and the smoothness of execution are worth mentioning.
🎶Soundtrack
The sound has a superb dubbing, with usual voices in cinema and television, the voices in English and Spanish are according to each of the characters that we will know. A soundtrack that contributes to create the magnificent atmosphere of the game, between mystery, fear and science fiction. The sound effects are really impressive in the case of the weapons, very forceful, as well as in the plasmids, but they call the attention powerfully to the different noises of the scene and what they contribute to the immersion of the player. A round section that masterfully transmits the perfect ingredient to provide Rapture with a utopia with the most tormented inhabitants, perfectly adapting to the failed ideologies proposed by Andrew Ryan.
BioShock 1 is one of the most captivating experiences a first-person shooter can offer. We will feel terrified with a setting that complements and drives the gameplay and story in a very powerful way. Mutilated corpses line almost every hallway and screaming monsters occasionally jump out at you from the shadows, but the moments of heart attack and jumping out of your seat are really few and far between. The pervasive fear in BioShock is of a psychological variety, just imagine walking into an ordinary suburban living room, for example, and discovering an entire family collapsed dead around their blinking television. BioShock allows the silent, disturbing scene to speak for itself. The wife still rests her head motionless on her late husband's shoulder. The children's legs hang lifelessly, too short to reach the ground. Who are these people? How did they die? The answers your imagination provides are far more frightening than anything a wobbly zombie can produce.
The whole thing works very well on its own, but the moment you add up its parts during many segments of your campaign, you get a video game that will be a must for FPS lovers.
La obra de Ken Levine entra por los ojos debido a su majestuoso mundo creado y aunado a una narrativa de lo más contundente posible. No tendremos por delante cientos de cinemáticas que cortan el ritmo del videojuego para conocer todo lo relacionado a Rapture, ya que la narración se desenvuelve de la forma más natural y efectiva posible, la cual cuenta con momentos donde la ambientación habla increíblemente por sí misma.
⚔️Historia
La historia de BioShock es una de las mejores que hemos presenciado hasta la fecha. El concepto, los personajes, el ritmo, los giros genuinamente impactantes son dignos de un largometraje. Sin embargo, a diferencia de una película, la experiencia aquí siempre es personal: una búsqueda de descubrimiento, una búsqueda de identidad. Lo más notable es que, aunque las respuestas que deseas existen, el juego no las regala fácilmente. Puedes descuidar una cinta de audio en particular o un mensaje rayado en la pared, y perder una capa completa de la trama. Cuanto más tiempo le dediques a BioShock , más te recompensará.

Las niñas más inocentes de la población se ven obligadas a cometer los actos más impensables. Y el fundador de Rapture, Andrew Ryan, preferiría ver su creación desmoronarse a verla salvada.
🎮Jugabilidad
El aspecto donde el videojuego más se crece es en su jugabilidad. BioShock es técnicamente un Shooter pero esa clasificación no le hace justicia al diverso híbrido de combate, estrategia, juego de roles y resolución de acertijos. Los enemigos pueden ser derrotados en un número casi infinito de formas, desde lo violentamente directo hasta lo defensivamente estratégico. La decisión siempre es tuya, el Gunplay se eleva a una nueva lista. En la mano derecha contaremos con nuestras armas mientras que en la izquierda se encontrarán los diversos plásmidos (poderes) que aparte de útiles para resolver puzles, son también realmente efectivos como ataque, complementando el uso de las armas. Hay diferentes tipos de plásmidos y su uso tanto para resolver puzles (interacción con el escenario) como para atacar a los enemigos es realmente excitante, y alimentándose de una barra de energía (EVE) que iremos rellenando con jeringuillas y con otros elementos como café, tabaco y alcohol (también afectan a la salud). En el uso de estos ítems hay detalles curiosos como el hecho de que el tabaco recupera nuestra EVE pero perjudica nuestra salud, o que el alcohol nos hace ver borroso durante algunos momentos. Pequeños detalles de juego clásico.
Los plásmidos, como decíamos, también nos serán útiles para resolver puzles, algunos de ellos necesarios para seguir avanzando y otros para acceder a una zona secundaria que nos reportará algún beneficio. Aquí entra en juego la distribución de los poderes por ranuras, y el carácter no lineal de ciertas partes del juego. Aunque el objetivo está claro, tendremos que explorar y probar cosas para lograr lo que necesitamos y seguir avanzando. En este sentido el juego nos ayuda bastante al incluir un mapa que podemos consultar en cualquier momento y al estar el escenario plagado de señales que nos indican, de un modo integrado, no intrusito o descarado, por dónde ir y dónde está cada zona. El carácter oscuro y tenebroso de la mayoría de los escenarios de Rapture hace que a veces sea fácil desorientarse, pero el mapa y las señales visuales nos sacarán rápidamente del apuro. Pero BioShock fomenta el pensamiento por encima de todo, brindándole muchas herramientas para luchar de manera más inteligente. Puedes combinar plásmidos para ataques creativos. Puede colocar trampas utilizando minas de proximidad y cables de disparo. Puede comprar municiones especiales para incineración o electrificación para sus armas. Puede piratear y volver a cablear un bot de seguridad para unirse a su lado. Puedes conjurar un señuelo para distraer a los enemigos. Puedes enfurecer a los enemigos para arrancarse las gargantas en lugar de las tuyas. Es un juego que combina acción con exploración y elementos de rol, pero la clave de todo esto es que lo hace de forma que no deja de ser ni accesible para los jugadores menos expertos, ni profundo para los fans de System Shock o juegos similares, como Deus Ex. No solo tiene un buen sistema de combate y un diseño excepcional de los niveles, llenos de secretos y pequeños detalles, lo suficientemente abiertos para dejar libertad al jugador pero ceñidos a una historia, sino que además la ambientación de Rapture, llena de detalles, la historia que se nos transmite poco a poco, con la propia acción del juego, hacen de Bioshock una experiencia redonda, un juego al mismo tiempo abierto a todos los jugadores pero plenamente satisfactorio para el fan del género en concreto.
Y sin embargo, de alguna manera, hay más, ya que el juego también incluye un desarrollo de personajes de estilo RPG relativamente robusto. Con Adam, la sustancia genética robada de las Little Sisters asesinadas, se pueden adquirir habilidades especiales (desde armaduras más duras hasta pasos más silenciosos) y plásmidos mejorados. El diseño artístico con el que cuenta Rapture es de los aspectos más envidiables posibles para aquellos desarrolladores quienes han querido emular algo de tales magnitudes. No es sólo que sea perfectamente conveniente para la historia que se desarrolla, sino que la jugabilidad exprime al máximo dicha ambientación. El diseño de niveles con el que cuenta es muy extenso, glorioso y siniestro de presenciar, teniendo además la posibilidad de devolvernos de nuestros propios pasos. También hay que sumarle el hecho de que logra ser lo suficientemente variado durante las 20 horas o más que posee su modo historia. Los enemigos podrán ser perfectamente diferenciados no solo a través de su comportamiento sino por sus desagradables apariencias.
Nada más salir del batiscafo que nos lleva a Rapture comenzamos a apreciar los innumerables detalles que pueblan la ciudad. Desde las ventanas de los edificios apreciamos una ciudad inmensa, devastada por una guerra civil que ha acabado con el orden y la paz que reinaba. Objetos caen desde los balcones de los edificios, neones se encienden y se apagan por fallos eléctricas, bestias marinas nadan entre los restos de puentes y estatuas. Escuelas de peces nadan junto a las ventanas. Secuoyas gigantes crecen en el fondo del océano en tubos de aire sellados. Un brillante volcán submarino proporciona calor y luz. El concepto de una sociedad sumergida es extraño, pero BioShock lo vende, le da en el clavo. La ciudad está viva.
Si nos ponemos a hablar de los escenarios de juego los halagos se quedan cortos digamos lo que digamos. Empezando con la suavidad de los movimientos y las animaciones, siguiendo con los detalles de todos los muebles, paredes y objetos, continuando con unas texturas y una iluminación impresionantes y finalizando con una excelente representación de los fluidos. Todo en Bioshock está relacionado con el agua. Rapture, ciudad submarina, sufre tras la guerra civil de innumerables goteras, boquetes en paredes, tuberías reventadas u objetos estrellados en los muros que provocan entradas masivas de agua. Raro es el habitáculo que no tenga un charco de aspecto extraordinariamente real.
Igualmente sobresalientes son los modelados de los enemigos y personajes. Ricos en polígonos, con texturas de órdago y originales diseños. Desde las pequeñas Little Sisters hasta los grandes Big Daddies, todos los modelos son excelentes, sin picos, ni bordes dentados, ni efecto plástico. Las animaciones están muy trabajadas, y aunque los enemigos corrientes no destacan por sus movimientos, ver en acción a un Big Daddy impresiona notablemente. Asimismo, su variedad de acciones y la suavidad con que las ejecuta son dignas de mención.
🎶Soundtrack
El sonido cuenta con un doblaje soberbio, con voces habituales en cine y en televisión, las voces en español son acordes a cada uno de los personajes que iremos conociendo. Una banda sonora que contribuye a crear la magnífica ambientación del juego, entre el misterio, el miedo y la ciencia ficción. Los efectos de sonido son realmente impactantes en el caso de las armas, muy contundentes, así como en los plásmidos, pero llaman la atención poderosamente los diferentes ruidos del escenario y lo que contribuyen a la inmersión del jugador. Un apartado redondo que transmite de manera magistral el ingrediente perfecto para dotar de Rapture una utopía con habitantes de lo más atormentados, adaptándose perfectamente a las fallidas ideologías que propuso Andrew Ryan.
BioShock 1 es una de las experiencias más cautivadoras que puede ofrecer un Shooter en primera persona. Nos sentiremos aterrados con una ambientación que se complementa e impulsa la jugabilidad e historia de una manera muy potente. Los cadáveres mutilados se alinean en casi todos los pasillos y los monstruos chillones ocasionalmente saltan hacia ti desde las sombras, pero los momentos de infarto y salto de tu asiento son realmente pocos y distantes. El miedo penetrante en BioShock es de una variedad psicológica, solo imagínese entrando en una sala de estar suburbana ordinaria, por ejemplo, y descubriendo a toda una familia desplomada muerta alrededor de su parpadeante televisor. BioShock permite que la escena silenciosa y perturbadora hable por sí misma. La esposa todavía descansa su cabeza inmóvil sobre el hombro de su difunto esposo. Las piernas de los niños cuelgan sin vida, demasiado cortas para llegar al suelo. ¿Quienes son esas personas? ¿Como murieron? Las respuestas que proporciona su imaginación son mucho más aterradoras que cualquier cosa que un zombie tambaleante pueda producir.
Todo el conjunto por separado funciona muy bien, pero al momento en el que se efectúan las sumas de sus partes durante muchos segmentos de su campaña, obtenemos un videojuego que será obligatorio para los amantes de los FPS.
