I want to share some of my experience with young okra plant which I took the shot of the picture with my Samsung m12 from my farm land, it intrigued me to discuss about how to plant it and condition to consider when planting it.
The above image is a young growing Okra plant, which is a flowering plant known for it’s edible pods. But the image is at it’s tender stage (looks like sun flower right? ).
Factors to consider when planting.
Well I would start by the climatic factors and soil content to consider when planting Okra plant. Okra plant can grow in a poor soil and little moisture, but it’s so demanding when it comes to heat and sunshine and it does tolerate frost that’s anywhere freezing because it’s very harmful to it.
In addition Okra plant grows best in warm area and it also require loose soil so that it can accommodate the penetrating root.
Planting of Okra.
Okra seeds in a garden can last at least two weeks after the last frost when the soil temperature warms to 50deg and above. Okra often grow 3 to 6 feet tall but it depends on the variety of the seed being plant. It is a nice practice to make the planting spacing about 12 to 15inches apart in a row, these helps the Okra plant to have enough space when growing up and equally before planting make sure to soak the seed at least 12hours to encourage germination.
Factors that can affect Okra plant.
It can be attack by caterpillars, cornearworms and a times root-knot nematodes which affect the growth.
Control measure.
Using spinosad is an organic method that can be used to control caterpillars and some other beetles and also spraying of dust containing biological pesticide which helps to control cornearworms .
