It's been a long time since I've posted here, but it's always nice to come back and say hello to fellow gardening, farming and other enthusiasts.
You see, due to work and busy schedules, I have not been as immersed in my backyard as I would like to be. At the moment I don't have plants that require too much care; however, I have filled my yard with a lot of annuals such as cassava (or yuca, as it is known in my country), plantain (with plants of various species) and Papaya, plus other smaller plants that I still have around.
I don't usually use chemical fertilisers in my yard, almost everything is self-sustainable because the same waste that the plants produce, such as the dried banana leaves or weeds that I cut, I use as organic matter to integrate it into the soil.
I still have a few pineapple plants that are close to starting to produce pineapples, so I continue to wait for the pineapple harvest that is still to come. I have already harvested a couple of pineapples, but these four are missing.
The Papaya plants I have have already produced what they were supposed to produce. I cut some of them and I still have only two left. One is small, but there is another one that is big, I think it is a male so it will not give me fruit, but if the other one that is still small is a female, then I will have papaya soon.
As I told you, I have several banana plants, different species of each.
What do I mean by different species? Well, you see, I don't know how it is known in your country, but banana is one kind of banana, but there are many more than just the kind you eat in a banana sundae.
Below, for example, you can see how one of these plants has already produced fruit and is growing.
It took just over 9 months to produce this banana bunch, which will grow into a large cluster of yellow fruit when they are finally ripe, their rich sweetness being one of the characteristics of this fruit.
On the other hand, this plant itself leaves small offspring growing from the roots of the plant. At the moment there is a lot of drought, so I can't transplant these offspring these days.
I have to wait until it rains again to transplant them and hope that they will grow big and strong.
Another small vegetable that I have in my backyard and that I have just harvested, are these small garlics that are very tasty.
I usually eat them whole, but I leave a few to sow again and always have this small species in the house.
Remember papaya plants? Well I just harvested a few of them while they were still green, I didn't want to harvest them ripe because my intention was to use them to make a papaya jam which is very tasty, my favourite in fact.
Here are a couple of photos of the papayas I harvested and a few ripe bananas that I also harvested recently.
Cassava, on the other hand, yielded a very good crop. I harvested all these tubers from about five cassava plants that took 12 months to be ready for harvest.
It was very good, better than last year. Of course, I don't have a weight to quantify how much each crop weighed, but just look at the space the whole crop takes up. It is very good.
As I said, I only have annuals in my backyard, i.e. plants that are harvested once a year. This is beneficial because you don't put so many demands on the soil and the plants take their time to grow; however, it is quite a long wait before you see any of these fruits.
On the other hand, I have a few chickens in my backyard that I have made a coop for them to shelter from the sun. They already have several nests in the roots of the banana trees, which is great because they have already started to lay eggs and every now and then I find some in the roots of the banana trees.

Well folks, that's it for now as far as this cleaning and harvesting I have done of my backyard. I hope soon to be able to transplant the bananas and plant some other long crop plants that I have in mind.

Hace mucho tiempo que no publicaba por acá, pero siempre es grato pasar de vuelta a saludar a los compañeros amantes de la jardinería, agricultura y demás.
Verán, por cuestión de trabajo y ocupaciones, no había estado tan inmerso en mi patio trasero como me gustaría. Actualmente no tengo plantas que requieran de demasiado cuidado; sin embargo, he llenado mi patio de un montón de plantas anuales como la mandioca (o yuca, como se le conoce en mi país), el plátano (con plantas de diversas especies) y Papaya, además de otras plantas más pequeñas que tengo aún por allí.
No suelo usar fertilizantes químicos en mi patio, casi todo es autosustentable pues los mismos desperdicios que producen las plantas, como las hojas secas de plátanos o maleza que corto, la uso como materia orgánica para integrarla al terreno.
Aún tengo unas cuántas plantas de piña que les falta poco para comenzar a producir piñas, así que continúo esperando por esta cosecha de piña que aún falta. Ya he cosechado un par de piñas, pero faltan estas cuatro.
Las plantas de Papaya que tengo ya produjeron lo que debían producir. Algunas las corté y aún me quedan dos solamente. Una es pequeña, pero hay otra que sí está grande, creo que es macho así que no me dará fruto, pero si la otra que aún está pequeña es hembra, entonces tendré papaya dentro de poco.
Como les dije, tengo varias plantas de plátano, distintas especies de cada una.
¿Cómo que distintas especies? Pues verán, no sé cómo se le conoce en sus países, pero la banana es una clase de plátano, pero hay muchas más que la que se comen en un sundae de bananas.
A continuación, por ejemplo, pueden ver cómo una de estas plantas ya produjo fruto y están en crecimiento.
Tardó poco más de 9 meses en producir este racimo de plátano, que se convertirá en un gran racimo de frutos amarillos cuando al fin estén maduros, siendo su rico dulzor una de las características de este fruto.
Por otra parte, esta propia planta deja pequeños hijos que van saliendo de las raíces de la planta. Por ahora hay mucha sequía, así que en estos días no puedo trasplantar estos hijos.
Me toca esperar a que vuelva a llover para trasplantarlos y esperar que crezcan grandes y fuertes.
Otro pequeño vegetal que tengo en mi patio y ya acabo de cosechar, son estos pequeños ajos que son muy ricos.
Suelo consumirlos completo, pero dejo algunos cuantos para volver a sembrar y tener siempre esta pequeña especie en la casa.
¿Recuerdan las plantas de papaya? Pues justo coseché unas cuántas aún verdes, no las quise cosechar maduras porque mi intención era usarlas para hacer un dulce de papaya que es muy rico, mi favorito de hecho.
A continuación un par de fotos de las papayas que coseché y unas cuántas bananas maduras que también coseché recientemente.
La mandioca, por otra parte, arrojó una cosecha muy buena. Todos estos tubérculos los coseché de aproximadamente cinco plantas de mandioca que tardaron 12 meses en estar lista para su cosecha.
Estuvo muy buena, mejor que la del año anterior. Claro, no tengo un peso para cuantificar cuanto pesó cada cosecha, pero solo vean el espacio que ocupa toda la cosecha. Es muy buena.
Como dije, solo tengo plantas anuales en mi patio trasero, es decir, plantas que se cosechan una vez al año. Esto es beneficioso porque no se le exige tanto al terreno y las plantas se toman su tiempo para crecer; sin embargo, es bastante lo que uno tiene que esperar para poder ver alguno de estos frutos.
Por otra parte, tengo en mi patio unas cuántas gallinas a las que le hice un gallinero para que se refugien del sol. Ya tienen varios nidos en las raíces de los plátanos, algo genial porque ya han comenzado a poner huevos y de vez en cuando encuentro algunos en las raíces de los plátanos.

Bien amigos, esto ha sido todo por ahora en cuanto a esta limpieza y cosecha que he hecho de mi patio trasero. Espero pronto poder trasplantar los plástanos y sembrar algunas otras plantas de cosecha larga que tengo en mente.
