The hydroponic lettuce has been growing wonderfully and I am loving this red variety.
The buttercrunch lettuce is starting to create a nice little head. I did take some of the larger outer leaves for a couple of salads though.
After almost one month of growing lettuce in a cold greenhouse I am finally able to pick some and enjoy a fresh, organic salad. These tower gardens were planted later than the hydroponic lettuce but are coming along nicely. I will be harvesting from these before I know it.
I had forgotten how alive the fresh greens taste compared to those purchased from the store. They were outstanding and even my husband commented on how great they were.
The onions are all getting too tall again so they will have to have another trim. I gave them a nice drench with fish emulsion last week and wow, did they take off fast.
All of the cold weather seedlings are doing quite well also.
These are Brussels sprouts that I am going to try and grow again. I had done them many years ago but did not realize that they don't do well in really hot weather. So I am going to plant them out early with my onion seedlings and cabbage plants. I will be doing them in the largest raised bed this season.
These are growing quickly too and will have to be planted up soon. I have cauliflower, Chinese cabbage, and Red Acre cabbage to grow this year.
This week I also planted some petunias into hanging baskets to give them a nice headstart. I had saved seeds from the ones I grew last year and it will be fun to see what colors they will be.
It was so nice out yesterday that I put up the hoops on one raised bed and covered it with heavy plastic. I am warming up the soil to get it ready for the onions next week. I will be keeping them covered on super cold days until they are well-adjusted to the weather. This will be my first year growing them and I am very hopeful for a bountiful harvest.
Even with the snow still coming and going I see that my garlic is popping up already. I have a few croci starting to bloom and tulip leaves are emerging. I spent the afternoon yesterday cutting back dead stems from the Heliobores as they are full of blossoms already as well. I think now that spring is here we will start to see a lot of plants returning.
Today will be another opportunity to get some more gardening cleanup with 50°F weather and lots of sunshine. Have a wonderful week everyone.
Until next time, this is Sunscape
