This year-end holiday brought me the chance to visit my eldest sibling. Her home feels serene, with a small garden that seems to hold a story of its own.
One thing caught my eye—a collection of orchids.
I hadn’t seen them before; they weren’t there during my last visit. Naturally, I couldn’t help but ask how she takes care of them.
Her explanation was so detailed, I decided to write it down here—just in case I ever want to nurture orchids of my own.
To care for orchids effectively, you'll need:
Orchid seeds or seedlings (Phalaenopsis, Dendrobium, etc.)
Well-ventilated pots, like ones made from coconut husk for an aesthetic touch.
Clean and dry wood charcoal for planting.
Sterile scissors or sharp knives for trimming.
Water and a sprayer for hydration.
Liquid orchid fertilizer for regular feeding.
Here are the steps for planting orchids:
- Prepare the Growing Medium:
Break wood charcoal into small pieces (2-3 cm). Soak in clean water for 24 hours to remove dust and harmful substances. - Select and Prepare Orchid Seedlings:
Choose healthy seedlings with thick, green roots. Trim any rotten roots with sterile scissors, then apply fungicide to prevent infections. - Planting the Orchid:
Fill the pot halfway with charcoal. Place the seedling in the center and add more charcoal to cover the roots, keeping the medium loose for good airflow.
Maybe that’s the gist of how it works.
As we talked, we admired the beauty of the orchids—like a prima donna standing gracefully among other plants, radiating elegance.
Watering orchids is best done with a sprayer, using just enough to keep the medium moist without overwatering. The charcoal in the pot retains humidity effectively. Watering 2-3 times a week is sufficient.
Additionally, orchids thrive in shaded areas away from direct sunlight. Find a spot with gentle, filtered light to keep them healthy and vibrant.
In Indonesia, orchids thrive with incredible diversity, making the country one of the richest in orchid species. Among the most renowned are Phalaenopsis (moon orchids) and Dendrobium, celebrated for their beauty and resilience.
