Cuando empecé a trabajar en la entidad estatal en la que aún me encuentro, fui analizando tres errores comunes que suelen cometer los jefes. Con el paso del tiempo, llegué a la conclusión de que no los aplicaría en mi propio emprendimiento.
When I started working in the state entity where I still work, I analyzed three common mistakes that bosses tend to make. Over time, I came to the conclusion that I would not apply them in my own endeavor.
El primer error recurrente que observo en la forma de dirigir es el hecho de que los jefes hablan demasiado. Al principio, luego de asistir a las reuniones con mi jefa principal, no tenía claro sobre cuáles eran mis tareas en el proyecto y me sentía avergonzada, hasta que me di cuenta de que a otros compañeros míos les ocurría lo mismo y se quejaban de que ella hablaba demasiado y tenían que volver a preguntarle más de una vez sobre las orientaciones que debían realizar. Para mí, este es un enfoque inadecuado en entornos laborales donde se valora la agilidad de la información y su eficacia. Muchas veces, las reuniones se alargan más de lo necesario y los trabajadores pierden tiempo, escuchando el mismo tema una y otra vez, pero con otras palabras.
The first recurring mistake I see in the way I lead is the fact that bosses talk too much. At first, after attending meetings with my main boss, I was not clear about what my tasks were in the project and felt embarrassed, until I realized that other colleagues of mine were doing the same thing and complained that she talked too much and had to ask her more than once about the directions they had to take. To me, this is an inappropriate approach in work environments where agility of information and its effectiveness is valued. Many times, meetings go on longer than necessary and workers waste time, listening to the same topic over and over again, but in different words.
El segundo error que veo en la dirección es que muchas veces los jefes no saben cómo comunicar las orientaciones a sus empleados y, cuando necesitan que les den cierta información, no saben elegir las palabras adecuadas para pedirla, por lo que acaban malinterpretándose y trabajando el doble, tanto los jefes como los empleados, lo que hace que pierdan tiempo los dos. Creo que los jefes deben tener los conocimientos básicos sobre otras especialidades o funciones de los trabajadores a su cargo, para que el intercambio de información y retroalimentación entre ambos sea más fluido.
The second mistake I see in management is that many times managers do not know how to communicate directions to their employees and, when they need to be given certain information, they do not know how to choose the right words to ask for it, so they end up misunderstanding each other and working twice as hard, both managers and employees, which wastes time for both of them. I believe that managers should have the basic knowledge about other specialties or functions of the workers under them, so that the exchange of information and feedback between the two is more fluid.
El tercer error, y para mí uno de los fundamentales, es la falta de empatía de los jefes. La empatía es muy importante a la hora de dirigir. En mi trabajo, muchos de mis compañeros han pedido la baja por este motivo, desde auxiliares de limpieza hasta profesionales. Esto mismo ocurre en el sector privado. Cuando un trabajador eficiente no siente que su jefe le muestra empatía, termina marchándose, antes o después.
The third mistake, and for me one of the most fundamental, is the lack of empathy on the part of managers. Empathy is very important when it comes to management. In my work, many of my colleagues have asked to leave for this reason, from cleaning assistants to professionals. The same thing happens in the private sector. When an efficient worker does not feel that his boss shows empathy, he ends up leaving, sooner or later.
En mi propia experiencia, he notado una total falta de empatía por parte de mis jefas. Cuando la situación del transporte público en Cuba se volvió más crítica de lo que era y no podía llegar a tiempo al trabajo, se convirtieron en mis enemigas. No entendían que me era imposible llegar a tiempo y tuvimos una gran discusión por este motivo. En el sector privado, muchos jefes resolvieron este problema otorgándoles una moto eléctrica a sus trabajadores o, en última instancia, yendo a recogerlos a sus casas en carro. Pero en el sector estatal hicieron todo lo contrario: se volvieron más exigentes y crueles (sobretodo en el sector estatal de bajos recursos). ¿Alguien entiende esto? La alternativa que siguieron muchos trabajadores fue irse de sus centros laborales estatales. Si bien esto había estado ocurriendo desde la creación de las pequeñas empresas privadas en Cuba, la situación se agravó con la crisis del transporte público.
In my own experience, I have noticed a total lack of empathy from my female bosses. When the public transportation situation in Cuba became more critical than it was and I could not get to work on time, they became my enemies. They did not understand that it was impossible for me to arrive on time and we had a big argument about it. In the private sector, many bosses solved this problem by giving their workers an electric scooter or, ultimately, going to pick them up at home by car. But in the state sector they did the opposite: they became more demanding and cruel (especially in the low-income state sector). Does anyone understand this? The alternative that many workers followed was to leave their state workplaces. Although this had been happening since the creation of small private enterprises in Cuba, the situation worsened with the public transportation crisis.
El salario del sector estatal no suple la mayoría de las demandas de los trabajadores hoy en día. ¿Cómo me vas a exigir una serie de requisitos si no eres capaz de pagarme lo que valen mis servicios? Muchos salarios no alcanzan ni para mantenerse una semana. Es totalmente indignante y eso es lo que está ocurriendo.
The salary of the state sector does not meet most of the demands of workers today. How are you going to demand a series of requirements from me if you are not able to pay me what my services are worth? Many salaries are not even enough to support me for a week. It is totally outrageous and that is what is happening.
A muchos jefes del sector estatal les cuesta ser creativos, adaptarse a los cambios, pensar y buscar alternativas que beneficien a la mayoría de sus trabajadores. Muchos no pueden y a otros tantos no les interesa, porque aquí todo el mundo está pensando en cómo llevar comida a la mesa todos los días y hay una serie de problemas heredados, que no te permiten ir solucionando los más sencillos.
Many managers in the state sector find it difficult to be creative, to adapt to changes, to think and look for alternatives that benefit the majority of their workers. Many cannot and many others are not interested, because here everyone is thinking about how to put food on the table every day and there are a series of inherited problems that do not allow you to solve the simplest ones.
Pienso que los emprendimientos en Cuba o en otras partes del mundo no deberían cometer estos errores. Un negocio debería salir adelante gracias al esfuerzo conjunto de jefes y empleados, cuando todos trabajan por una misma misión: desarrollarse y crecer. Para que esta unidad sobreviva, tanto el jefe como el trabajador deben saber obtener resultados que los beneficien a ambos. El jefe no debe olvidar ponerse en el lugar de sus empleados, y respetarlos, hablando de forma educada, precisa y concisa.
I think that businesses in Cuba or in other parts of the world should not make these mistakes. A business should succeed thanks to the joint effort of bosses and employees, when they all work for the same mission: to develop and grow. For this unity to survive, both the boss and the employee must know how to obtain results that benefit them both. The boss must not forget to put himself in the place of his employees, and respect them, speaking politely, precisely and concisely.
En fin, conociendo las consecuencias que conlleva hablar en exceso durante las reuniones laborales, la falta de habilidades comunicativas efectivas y la ausencia de empatía por parte de los jefes, indudablemente, no cometería estos tres errores en mi propio emprendimiento.
In short, knowing the consequences of excessive talking during work meetings, the lack of effective communication skills and the lack of empathy on the part of the bosses, I would certainly not make these three mistakes in my own business.
