I was at a business summit two days ago and the experience was memorable in all sense. Owing to the fact that I plan to own a business someday when I'm done with my studies or even before I'm done, I found the opportunity to be in the midst of business owners one not to miss. It was a whole lot of learning for me as there were really impressive business owners who attended.
It's really shocking how much people go through to be successful as entrepreneurs or business owners, it's not easy at all and I reconfirmed this fact at the summit. They shared a lot about their experiences, shared ideas and helped recognise possible failures or threats to face in businesses.
One of the topics they dealt with that caught my attention was "The transition from paid employment to business development" A transition that comes with a lot of changes which they explained more on.
So there were four speakers (business minded people) on this subject matter and it was fascinating that these four were a combination of different perspectives... One is a full entrepreneur who was once an employee, another is both an entrepreneur and an employee, another is a full employee and an investor and the last one is a business (school) owner.
This topic got good responses from them in different ways and a few got stuck in my head which I'll share. One thing about starting something new, there is always going to be either a bad result or a good one, failures before success or maybe too many failures for a rethink to do what works best for you.
Fear
The speaker who brought this up as one of the problems to face in the transition is an employee, working in a huge company that pays him well. He could explain from his experience that stopping an employment job to start a business will create fear at first. Imagine an employee that has worked in a company for ten years, gotten used to salary payment about to start his own business.
The fear that there will be no more monthly pays and he is on his own in his new adventure. This kinda creates a barrier at first and a lot fail to go ahead with the plan while some overcome the fear.
Learn and gather experience from your paid employment
The speaker on this as a good start is a full entrepreneur. Not all employees got the job they have with the mind of starting their own businesses someday so not all would learn from the experiences having that in mind. But this speaker is a living experience of the strategy to grow his business. He started out as an employee but made sure to learn as much as he can from his experience before he began his business plan.
To start a business, you must have had good idea of what to do. Ignorance is not what you can deal with if you don't learn even if the business you want to do is totally different from what you've been exposed to in the company you worked at. Learn as much as you can while you work and gather experience before taking the path to your own business success.
Get and build marketing skills, it is needed
No new business can stand without the help of marketing... Says the speaker who is a school owner. It's one thing to have a perfect business idea but without a good marketing skill, no one will know about your amazing idea or product. So building a way to get patronage, reviews or even critics is a good start for your transition.
A good employee experience could make this step a bit easier but starting a new business is not easy as saying you will. There is going to be a lot of ups and downs but with dedication and consistency, success is achievable.
