Of course it might not be TikTok it might just be a general lack of sparkle, a quiet hum of unenthusiasm that's dragging down productivity. The infectious enthusiasm of wanting to do more, and showing your work has vanished!
So how do we, as savvy business owners and entrepreneurs, turn those TikTok scrolling disasters into terrific team efforts?
It's a delicate dance between discipline and delight. It is a blend of firm boundaries and fantastic encouragement.
We need to start though by acknowledging the elephant in the room (or rather the business) ~ distraction is rampant.
In our hyper-connected world, it's very easy for anyone, including our employees (and let's face it, even us 🤣) to get sidetracked.
The key isn't to ban every app under the sun and turn your workplace into a digital desert which can often breed resentment and can stifle kill creativity and productivity!
So what do we do?
Rather than that approach try fostering a fun environment where productivity is the natural outcome.
Our 3 tips to do this are:~
1. Set Clear Expectations (and Consequences!)
This might sound obvious, but it's often overlooked. Have a clear policy on personal device use during work hours. Communicate it effectively and ensure everyone understands the "why" behind it – it's about fairness, productivity, and delivering value to your customers.
And yes, there need to be consequences for consistent breaches. Think of it as a gentle nudge first, then a firmer push if needed. No one wants to be the "bad guy," but a business needs to run efficiently.
Everyone knows that you should be working and not playing on your phone. So tell them upfront what is expected. Turning a blind eye is a recipe for disaster as people will just exploit you. It is something that needs to be nipped in the bud before it becomes rampant!
2. Make Work Engaging (and Fun!)
This is where the "delight" comes in. If your employees are genuinely excited about their work, they're less likely to seek escape in endless scrolls. Can you gamify tasks? Look at how gamification helps on Hive. Offer opportunities for skill development? Encourage team collaboration on interesting projects? Run little competitions. Remember that a little enthusiasm from the top can be contagious! Regular check-ins, saying thank you, rewarding people, celebrating small wins, and providing constructive feedback can also work wonders.
3. Lead by Example
I have firmly believed in all aspects of my life in leading by example. If I won't do something then why should I expect my employee or even partner to do it?
