Earlier on today I noticed my right wrist was hurting and it still is to be honest. I know exactly what has caused it.
It is a mouse injury!
No No, not the living mouse, the mouse we use for computers! It is a repetitive strain injury or RSI.
I am not sure if that is what you call them in Spanish. Oh well I will find out when I translate this original English text into Spanish using Deepl....
Let me talk about RSIs then skip back to the beginning and say how all this relates to being an entrepreneur before we get muted and banned from the moderators on our first post in this wonderful Be entrepreneur community!
Repetitive Strain injuries or RSIs
The clue is in the name... These injuries come about from performing the same or repetitive movements over and over again.
For example typing or using a touch pad or mouse, in my case all three!
This motion is straining you to much and an RSI can cause pain, numbness, and tingling in your hands, wrists, elbows, and shoulders.
In an ideal world to cut down the chances of an RSI you should take regular breaks from your work and use ergonomic equipment, such as a keyboard and mouse that are designed to reduce strain.
But I did say an ideal world!
Covid .... remember that? The pandemic....
This was the time when many of us starting working from home, which then became hybrid working or even full time working from home once the pandemic was over.
For me I have used computers since they were available. I remember the days of punched cardboard type cards and no not memory cards!
In other words I have been typing on keyboards for decades, so today was a bit of a shock.
I decided to write this post as so many people are now working from home or working online in their quest to become or remain an entrepeneur. I will be curious to see how @daniasi handles things over in Nigeria or does he just get up and walk around.
Eyes 👀 .... look after them!
Okay so this applies to almost everyone now and not just us entrepreneurs. I shudder to think how many people have mobile phones but must be in the billions...
Screen time ... take this old man (as my business partner the young whippersnapper @deraaa likes to call me). When I work from home, I utilise my Google Pixel 9 Pro Xl smartphone, my Honor 8 tablet, my chromebook and my HO laptop.
At any given time I could be working on or glancing at 4 devices.
Who says the old are technically challenged!
The bottom line though is that we put so much relentless strain on our eyes.
Hours spent glued to screens, navigating emails, documents, and video calls, can lead to digital eye strain.
Symptoms like dry eyes, blurred vision, headaches, and neck pain are common complaints.
I am lucky, I have glasses for driving and glasses for reading, neither of which I use. If I am struggling I just make the font a little bit larger. Problem solved!

Have you heard if this before? Okay so we know we should be having regular breaks, but if you are struggling to do that, then at least do this ...
Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds
Go on .... did you try it?

The pyjama culture and poor postures!
Going back to the Covid days the temptation to work from the sofa or bed dressed in our pyjamas was fun. I am not going to lie I still do it quite often!
But for many it does lead to poor posture. I am going to exclude myself as my back is broken thanks to my Ankylosing Spondylitus and I have to sit in a way that is least painful and that of course changes day to day.
But slouching, hunching over laptops, and inadequate ergonomic setups can contribute to back pain, neck stiffness, and repetitive strain injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome.
If you can, invest in proper ergonomic equipment and consciously maintain good postures to act as preventative measures.
Touching grass - beating the sedentary behaviour
Or as we would say getting some fresh air. By its nature, online work can also foster sedentary behaviour.
That partner of mine says I have a big bottom, well not really but you know the thing ... without the natural movement of an office environment – walking to meetings, visiting colleagues – we can easily spend the entire day glued to our chairs.
This lack of physical activity increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, weight gain, and other chronic health issues.
Integrating regular exercise into our daily routines becomes paramount, not just a suggestion. I do this by going out for walks. Heck it might even be going to the shop to buy food for dinner. But it is stretching, it is moving and it is doing us good!
Mental health and The "always-on" culture
Do we ever turn the bloody things off! There is always the pressure to respond to emails at all hours, the pressure to respond to notifications and messages and all hours.
Couple that with the isolation of working alone and you concoct a recipe for increased stress, anxiety, and even burnout.
Even the author with his don't give a f*uck attitude can get close to burnout from time to time!
But to help keep your sanity then establishing clear boundaries, scheduling breaks, and actively seeking social interaction are vital to protect our mental well-being.
Remember I said about going to the shop for food, well not only do we get exercise but we talk to people and get some social interaction without even trying!

But to finish off, online work offers undeniable advantages, we just need to beware of those potential health pitfalls.
With a little thought we can proactively address the issues I mentioned like eye strain, poor posture, sedentary behaviour, and the blurring of work-life boundaries.
We need to take time off when we want to, not because we have neglected our bodies and they have said time off now!
Don't let the convenience come at the cost of your long-term well-being.

En un mundo ideal, para reducir las posibilidades de sufrir una RSI deberías hacer pausas regulares en tu trabajo y utilizar equipos ergonómicos, como un teclado y un ratón diseñados para reducir la tensión.

Fue la época en la que muchos de nosotros empezamos a trabajar desde casa, que luego se convirtió en trabajo híbrido o incluso a tiempo completo desde casa una vez que terminó la pandemia.
En mi caso, he utilizado ordenadores desde que estaban disponibles. Recuerdo los días de las tarjetas de cartón perforadas y no, ¡no tarjetas de memoria!
En otras palabras, llevo décadas escribiendo en teclados, así que lo de hoy ha sido un poco chocante.
Decidí escribir este post porque ahora hay mucha gente que trabaja desde casa o trabaja en línea en su afán por convertirse o seguir siendo un emprendedor. Tendré curiosidad por ver cómo @daniasi maneja las cosas en Nigeria o simplemente se levanta y anda por ahí.

Vale esto se aplica a casi todo el mundo ahora y no solo a nosotros los emprendedores. Me estremezco al pensar cuántas personas tienen teléfonos móviles, pero debe ser en los miles de millones ...
Tiempo de pantalla... mira a este viejo (como le gusta llamarme a mi socio, el joven mequetrefe @deraaa). Cuando trabajo desde casa, utilizo mi smartphone Google Pixel 9 Pro Xl, mi tablet Honor 8, mi chromebook y mi portátil HO.
En un momento dado podría estar trabajando o echando un vistazo a 4 dispositivos.
**¿Quién dice que los mayores tienen problemas técnicos?
La conclusión es que sometemos a nuestros ojos a un esfuerzo incesante.
Las horas que pasamos pegados a las pantallas, navegando por correos electrónicos, documentos y videollamadas, pueden provocar fatiga visual digital.
Síntomas como sequedad ocular, visión borrosa, dolores de cabeza y de cuello son quejas habituales.
Tengo suerte, dispongo de gafas para conducir y gafas para leer, ninguna de las cuales utilizo. Si tengo problemas, simplemente aumento un poco el tamaño de la letra. Problema resuelto.

¡La cultura del pijama y las malas posturas!
Volviendo a los tiempos de Covid la tentación de trabajar desde el sofá o la cama vestidos con nuestro pijama era divertida. No voy a mentir, ¡aún lo hago a menudo!
Pero a muchos les lleva a adoptar malas posturas. Voy a excluirme, ya que tengo la espalda rota debido a mi espondilitis anquilosante y tengo que sentarme de la manera que menos me duela, lo cual, por supuesto, cambia día a día.
Pero encorvarse, encorvarse sobre el portátil y las configuraciones ergonómicas inadecuadas pueden contribuir al dolor de espalda, la rigidez del cuello y las lesiones por esfuerzo repetitivo, como el síndrome del túnel carpiano.
Si puedes, invierte en equipos ergonómicos adecuados y mantén conscientemente buenas posturas como medidas preventivas.

Integrar el ejercicio regular en nuestras rutinas diarias se convierte en algo primordial, no sólo en una sugerencia. Yo lo hago saliendo a pasear. Puede que incluso vaya a la tienda a comprar comida para la cena. Pero es estirarse, es moverse y nos hace bien.
Salud mental y la cultura del «siempre conectado
¿Alguna vez apagamos los malditos aparatos? Siempre existe la presión de responder a correos electrónicos a todas horas, la presión de responder a notificaciones y mensajes a todas horas.
Si a eso le sumamos el aislamiento que supone trabajar solo, se prepara una receta para aumentar el estrés, la ansiedad e incluso el agotamiento.
Incluso el autor, con su actitud de don't give a f*uck, puede llegar a estar al borde del agotamiento de vez en cuando.
Pero para mantener la cordura es fundamental establecer límites claros, programar descansos y buscar activamente la interacción social para proteger nuestro bienestar mental.
¿Recuerdas lo que dije de ir a la tienda a por comida? Pues no sólo hacemos ejercicio, sino que hablamos con la gente y conseguimos algo de interacción social sin ni siquiera intentarlo.
