Hello everyone, and especially the SurfHive Community! It's Jasper, the musical-surfer dad from Cape Town in South Africa.
Last weekend my friend Brad invited myself, my wife and daughter, and several of our other friends to their Holiday House up the West Coast of South Africa... Now, there's a cute little phrase that is often said by Afrikaans-speaking surfers in South Africa, "Die Weskus is die bes kus", which translates pretty much to The West Coast is the Best Coast!
Most of the country might disagree... the West Coast has a hard, semi-desert sort of climate compares to the more lush garden route of the Southern coast, or the beautiful sub-tropical East Coast...
But as a surfer, especially at this time of the year (Autumn) when there are often days of blue skies, but much less hot and especially much less windy than summer, I think the phrase is pretty spot on!
Friday night
We actually arrived before Brad did at the house about 2 hours north of Cape Town... so we were locked out of the house waiting for Brad and the one other friend who could make it up on Friday... While we made my little daughter Madi comfortable with blankets and a tablet to watch, I decided to enjoy the sunset from the water... as there was a beach literally in front of the beautiful house...
A quick "welcome to the West Coast wave", backlit by the setting sun. Besides, the odd man-planted palm tree, you can see no trees on this part of the more arid coastline of South Africa... we were going to be staying in one of the houses right on the beach, very much like the ones you can see in the picture. It seems everyone in this village sticks to the rather Mediterranean house colour!
A beautiful sunset as I noticed Brad and our other friend arrive to let us into the house and enjoy some oven pizzas and wine together
Saturday Morning
I had done my research and I knew that there was a famous right point just a few hundred meters to the north where the beach ended. The stories about it made me feel that it could only be surfed in enormous swells, so I was pleasantly surprised to see another surfer out there in a more mortal size... possibly the spring low tide helped?
With only one other person out, it was pretty easy for me to catch my fair share as well, and I thought the wave was fantastic, even if this is smaller than its absolute best, when it can be even longer and more gnarly!
Saturday Afternoon
As my morning session ended, we were joined at the house by the 4 other friends. We decided to go to a place in the next village that my wife and I had discovered years ago, which sells the best fish, calamari and chips.
On the strength of that delicious lunch, my friend Olivia, who usually takes more convincing, was keen to get in the water at a beginner friendly spot I had found... the wind was still unusually soft, so she had a great time...
It was great to see Olivia time this one correctly and get a nice long ride all the way in to the beach, where a channel along the rocks made it super easy to paddle out for more!
A party-wave...
So all in all it was a wonderful weekend! Besides the surfing there was plenty of quality time on the beach with my wife and daughter, who is nearly 3 now. We had a braai (barbeque) on the Saturday night, and I think a couple of friends drank and laughed until 2am...
Not me! I'm a Dad now! Hahaha!

Olá a todos, e especialmente à Comunidade SurfHive! É Jasper, o pai surfista musical da Cidade do Cabo, na África do Sul.
No fim de semana passado, meu amigo Brad convidou a mim mesmo, minha esposa e filha, e vários de nossos outros amigos para sua casa de férias na costa oeste da África do Sul... Agora, há uma pequena frase fofa que é frequentemente dita por surfistas que falam Afrikaans em África do Sul, "Die Weskus is die bes kus", que se traduz basicamente como A Costa Oeste é a Melhor Costa!
A maior parte do país pode discordar... a Costa Oeste tem um clima duro e semidesértico em comparação com a rota dos jardins mais exuberantes da costa Sul, ou a bela Costa Leste subtropical...
Mas como surfista, especialmente nesta época do ano (outono), quando muitas vezes há dias de céu azul, mas muito menos quente e especialmente muito menos ventoso que o verão, acho que a frase é bastante acertada!
Noite de sexta-feira
Na verdade, chegamos antes de Brad em casa, cerca de 2 horas ao norte da Cidade do Cabo... então ficamos trancados do lado de fora de casa esperando por Brad e outro amigo que poderia fazer as pazes na sexta-feira... Enquanto fazíamos meu pequeno filha Madi confortável com cobertores e um tablet para assistir, resolvi aproveitar o pôr do sol da água... pois tinha uma praia literalmente em frente à linda casa...
Um rápido "bem-vindo à onda da Costa Oeste", iluminado pelo sol poente. Além disso, uma ou outra palmeira plantada pelo homem, não se vêem árvores nesta parte da costa mais árida da África do Sul... íamos ficar numa das casas mesmo na praia, muito parecidas com aquelas você pode ver na foto. Parece que todos nesta aldeia aderem à cor da casa, bastante mediterrânica!
Um lindo pôr do sol quando percebi que Brad e nosso outro amigo chegaram para nos deixar entrar em casa e saborear algumas pizzas no forno e vinho juntos
Sábado de manhã
Eu tinha feito minha pesquisa e sabia que havia um famoso ponto certo a apenas algumas centenas de metros ao norte, onde terminava a praia. As histórias sobre ele me fizeram sentir que só poderia ser surfado em ondas enormes, então fiquei agradavelmente surpreso ao ver outro surfista em um tamanho mais mortal... será que a maré baixa da primavera ajudou?
Com apenas mais uma pessoa de fora, foi muito fácil para mim pegar meu quinhão também, e achei a onda fantástica, mesmo que seja menor do que a melhor, quando pode ser ainda mais longa e mais retorcida!
Sábado à tarde
Quando minha sessão matinal terminou, outros quatro amigos se juntaram a nós em casa. Decidimos ir a um lugar na aldeia vizinha que minha esposa e eu havíamos descoberto anos atrás, que vende o melhor peixe, lula e batatas fritas.
Com a força daquele delicioso almoço, minha amiga Olivia, que costuma ser mais convincente, fez questão de entrar na água em um local amigável para iniciantes que eu havia encontrado... o vento ainda estava excepcionalmente suave, então ela se divertiu muito. ..
Foi ótimo ver Olivia cronometrar corretamente e fazer um longo passeio até a praia, onde um canal ao longo das rochas tornou super fácil remar para mais!
Uma onda de festa...
Então, apesar de tudo, foi um fim de semana maravilhoso! Além do surf, passei muito tempo de qualidade na praia com minha esposa e filha, que agora tem quase 3 anos. Fizemos um braai (churrasco) no sábado à noite, e acho que alguns amigos beberam e riram até as 2 da manhã...
Eu não! Eu sou pai agora! Hahaha!
