Around 1839, when the camera was first used and was only able to capture black and white. Ninety-one years later, in 1930, the colouring photos were introduced. Although has reached 182 years, black and white photos are still used until now because of the low cost and are back in demand and are still quite popular today, both for magazines and other works of art.
Capturing black and white is not the same as colour photos, because the picture must pay more attention to the contrast between one and another, it is caused by lighting. Black and white photography is good in low contrast conditions, such as overcast weather. We need to pay more attention to the composition actually because there are no other colours to enjoy. It is necessary to see the highlight shapes and lighting and shadows also very important in black and white photos.
It should be realized that black and white are plain photos and force us to look at the form and not be too concerned with colour, even though black and white are in colour too. A subject that is dimly lit and has shadows may be meaningless in a colour image, but in black and white it can be very powerful.
The essence of black and white is the ability to convey pure impressions and emotions that are very strong and not deceptive. As we know black and white have a lot to do with contrast, so pay attention and highlight that. The light is a bit dark, combined with various patterns, shapes and repetitions in the frame can make the picture very extraordinary.
The low light conditions can give a soft impression that will not be seen in colour images. So, the main key to getting an interesting black and white is that we can imagine the subject in colour in black and white and keep trying to visualize how the final result will be. How about your opinion?
