Although we are currently seeing many modern cars, there is still a large part of the private car fleet that circulates on our beloved and battered roads and avenues. It is not in vain that Havana and all of Cuba are also known for being rolling museums.
Returning to my friend's car, the classic smell of petroleum that these devices carry inside, in the living room, is another characteristic of Cuban transportation. If you arrive home smelling of oil, we know you came in an almendrón. Another classic facet of these motorized dinosaurs is the enveloping audio that they proclaim: pure Reguetón. Not all are like that, there are the almendrones to go out, the pretty ones, the strawberries, the convertibles, in which at the point of noon you can fry an egg on the seat upholstered with vinyl. Recién me visitó un amigo que tiene un "almendrón" (carro americano de las décadas de los 40 y 50) y me hizo un cuento casi increíble de lo que le pasó en su carro. Resulta que se le cayó el tanque de combustible del carro en medio de la calle, literal, se le desprendió en plena marcha. Y es que es difícil mantener un auto que ya celebra su 75 cumpleaños. Aunque la mayoría de estos autos tienen motores más modernos lo demás sigue siendo rancio, remachado, reconstruido varias veces. Aunque actualmente se están viendo muchos autos modernos todavía queda una gran parte del parque de autos privados que circula por nuestras queridas y maltrechas carreteras y avenidas. No en vano a La Habana y toda Cuba se les conoce también por ser museos rodantes.
Volviendo la carro de mi amigo, el clásico olor a petróleo que llevan estos aparatos dentro, en el salón, es otra característica del transporte del cubano. Si llegas con olor a petróleo a casa, sabemos que viniste en almendrón. Otra faceta clásica de estos dinosaurios motorizados es el audio envolvente que pregonan: puro Reguetón. ¡Almendrón que no cante Reguetón no se respeta! 🤪
No todos son así, están los almendrones de salir, los bonitos, los fresas, los descapotables, en los que a punto del mediodía puedes freír un huevo en el asiento tapizado con vinil. Eso son los que trabajan para el sector turístico. No sé aún como pueden aguantar un paseo en un auto así a las 2 pm, es para cocinarse, pero imagino que es algo exótico para alguien que pase la mayor parte de su vida en un clima frío, tiene sentido.
