Hello friends, how is your day going?
I had been meaning to visit the Havana Zoo for quite some time, and yesterday I finally decided to go. It's not a place where I feel comfortable and can relax taking photos. Let me explain why: for several years now, the place has been in terrible condition, and the animals have suffered the most. But since I understand that photography can also be a very powerful tool for communication—it's not just about taking pretty pictures, we can also use it to help those who are suffering—I decided to highlight the situation of some monkeys that have been living there for decades and couldn't be in a worse situation.
I had barely begun my tour looking for the primate cages when I heard a loud noise, and I couldn't believe my ears. It was like a scene from a horror movie. In a hole that seemed to be intended for another type of animal, there was this chimpanzee, sitting on a pile of trash, paper, and cans. What struck me most was how he looked at me, his gestures saying, "Hey, I'm here, do something for me."
The sun is mandatory; there is no place for shade except that which comes from the retaining wall.
And well, you have to see those faces, they stare at you with such sadness in their eyes. I spent some time there while they let me, because I immediately started to attract the attention of the park guards. Imagine me walking around with my camera, it made them nervous.
People constantly approached me to ask what those photos were for, why I was taking them. I simply didn't give any explanations, just entertainment, that's all. I couldn't give myself away and risk being kicked out of the place or something like that, although I imagine I won't be very welcome next time.
With today's series, I am not seeking to share an aesthetically appealing photograph; on the contrary, I am seeking to raise awareness about the importance of loving and respecting animals, and how a photographer can use their work to become a voice for those who suffer at the hands of savage human beings.

Hola amigos, ¿cómo les lleva el día?
Tenía pendiente una visita al Zoológico de La Habana desde hace ya tiempo y ayer finalmente me decidí. No es un lugar donde me siento a gusto y puedo relajarme haciendo fotos, les explico por qué, hace algunos años el sitio está en pésimas condiciones y principalmente los animales se han llevado la peor parte, pero como entiendo que la fotografía también puede ser una herramienta muy poderosa para comunicar, ¡no es solo la foto bonita, también podemos con ella ayudar a los que sufren, por eso opté por hacer visible la situación de algunos monos que allí viven hace décadas y que en peor situando no pueden estar.
Apenas comencé mi recorrido buscando las jaulas de los primates siento un sonido fuerte, y no lo podía creer, parecía una escena de terror, en un hueco al parecer destinado a otro tipo de animal, estaba este Chimpancé, sentado sobre un basurero de papeles y latas y lo que más me impresionó fue cómo me veía, sus gestos eran de: Oye, aquí estoy, haz algo por mí.
El sol es obligatorio, no hay lugar para la sombra salvo la que surge del muro de contención.
Y bueno, hay que ver esos rostros, te miran fijamente a los ojos con mucha tristeza, allí pasé un rato mientras me dejaron, porque enseguida comencé a llamar la atención de los guardias del parque, imagínense con mi cámara recorriendo el lugar, los tenía nerviosos.
Constantemente se me acercaba alguien a preguntarme para qué eran esas fotos, por qué las hacía. Yo simplemente no daba explicaciones, solamente entretenimiento, eso es todo. Tampoco podía regalarme y buscar que me expulsaran del lugar o algo parecido, aunque imagino que no seré muy bienvenido la próxima vez.
Con la serie de hoy no busco compartir una fotografía estéticamente atractiva, todo lo contrario, busco concientizar sobre la importancia de amar y respetar a los animales, y de cómo un fotógrafo puede con su trabajo convertirse en voz de aquellos que sufren en manos de seres humanos salvajes.
