Hail to the Hive!
The last few days I’ve been wandering around areas of the city that were very familiar to me a long time ago. In my youththese area would have been as familiar to me as the proverbial back of my hand. But a lot has changed. There are still some parts that have retained their familiarity but surrounding them there has been wholesale demolition and re building.
This little stretch of the canal, Frog Island, running north of the city centre has retained its core identitiy but all around there are new building replacing old ones. I have waves of memories and nostalgia washing over me as I walk the tow path. I have to say the graffiti has improved tremendously though. I have to say I’m really loving it.
This lart of the city is long overdue the regeneration that is taking place as it was very much a forgotten part of town. But not now. It will be interesting to see how it all looks and what lart the canal will play in it moving forward.
Even 30 years ago we used to talk about how the waterways running through the city were a wasted opportunity that could have reslly made the city vibrant.
So I hope they had them firmly in mind when the plans to regenerate the area were made.
I really hope so otherwise they are wasting a golden opportunity to bring the city to life.
