I've wanted to photograph this place for a long time, I see a lot of artistic potential in it, and in the middle of last month I was able to go and dedicate a few minutes to take several shots, which I share today and are my entry to the #monomad challenge.
Desde hace tiempo quería fotografiar este lugar, le veo mucho potencial artístico, y a mediados del mes pasado pude ir y dedicar unos minutos para hacerle varias tomas, las cuales comparto hoy y son mi entrada al reto #monomad.
It is a square surrounded by many trees and in the center has some rather striking statues, its official name is Monument to the Mother but is popularly known as Mothers' Square.
Se trata de una plaza rodeada de muchos árboles y que en el centro tiene unas estatuas bastante llamativas, su nombre oficial es Monumento a la Madre pero popularmente se conoce como Plaza Las Madres.
It is located in La Victoria, Aragua State (Venezuela), specifically on Avenida Francisco de Loreto, El Recreo sector, where the city ends on its west side.
Está ubicado en La Victoria, estado Aragua (Venezuela), específicamente en la Avenida Francisco de Loreto, sector El Recreo, donde termina la ciudad por su lado oeste.
I got there around 10:30 in the morning and the light at that time, with bright sunshine, favored me to achieve what I wanted: clean shots. From the beginning I imagined these photos in black and white.
Llegué allí como a las 10:30 de la mañana y la luz que había en ese momento, con sol radiante, me favoreció para lograr lo que quería: unas tomas limpias. Desde un principio me imaginé estas fotos en blanco y negro.
As you can see, the Monument to the Mother consists of a main statue that is a woman, she is sitting and breastfeeding a baby that she is carrying with her left arm, on her right side a child is standing, whom she caresses.
Como pueden observar, el Monumento a la Madre consta de una estatua principal que es una mujer, ella está sentada y amamanta a un bebé que carga con su brazo izquierdo, a su lado derecho está parado un niño, a quien acaricia.
Around the pedestal where the female figure is standing there is an X-shaped fountain seen from above, and on each of its four points sits a lion. Unfortunately the fountain was not working, it would have been interesting to play with the water in some of the shots.
Alrededor del pedestal donde está la figura femenina hay una fuente que tiene como forma de X vista desde arriba, y en cada una de sus cuatro puntas está sentado un león. Lamentablemente la fuente no estaba funcionando, hubiese sido interesante jugar con el agua en algunas de las tomas.
All this sculptural work, inaugurated in 1976, was made by the Spanish artist Rafael Ochoa Vertedor, who lived for some years in the city of La Victoria.
Toda esta obra escultórica, inaugurada en 1976, fue realizada por el artista plástico español Rafael Ochoa Vertedor, quien estuvo radicado por algunos años en la ciudad de La Victoria.
I asked myself, why are those four lions guarding the Mother? A little later, when I read the plaque on the front of the pedestal, I understood the reason.
Me pregunté, ¿por qué estarán esos cuatro leones custodiando a la Madre? Poco después, al leer la placa que está en la parte delantera del pedestal, entendí la razón.
The text reads: "Monument to the Mother. The Lions Club of La Victoria with the collaboration of the Municipal Council and the community, dedicate this monument in homage to the Mother. La Victoria, May 1976".
El texto dice: “Monumento a la Madre. El Club de Leones de La Victoria con la colaboración del Consejo Municipal y la comunidad, dedican este monumento en homenaje a la Madre. La Victoria, Mayo 1976”.
Then I stopped to read the other plaque on the back of the statue and there are written the names of the members of the Lions Club of La Victoria for the period 1975-1976, so logically those felines allude to the symbol of this club, of which I had no knowledge either. I researched on the Internet and it is a social group that emerged in 1917 and whose members carry out works for the benefit of their communities. This international association (www.lionsclubs.org) has thousands of clubs distributed in different countries of the five continents, I don't know if the one in this city is still active, I couldn't get any information.
Luego me detuve a leer la otra placa que se encuentra en la parte de atrás de la estatua y allí están escritos los nombres de los socios del Club de Leones de La Victoria para el período 1975-1976, entonces lógicamente esos felinos hacen alusión al símbolo de este club, del que tampoco tenía conocimiento. Investigué en Internet y se trata de una agrupación social que surgió en 1917 y cuyos integrantes realizan obras en beneficio de sus comunidades. Esta asociación internacional (www.lionsclubs.org) tiene miles de clubes distribuidos en diferentes países de los cinco continentes, no sé si el de esta ciudad continúa activo, no pude conseguir ninguna información.
I continued to circle the monument to take more shots, fortunately there were very few people around at that hour and no one was in the way of the photos, although they did look at me curiously.
Seguí rodeando el monumento para hacer más tomas, afortunadamente había muy poca gente por ahí a esa hora y nadie se atravesó en las fotos, aunque sí me miraban con curiosidad.
The square and its surroundings were clean, however it is evident that the monument has not received adequate maintenance in a long time, I think it needs to be restored to recover its original beauty. For example the base where the statue is, covered with gray marble slabs, has several cracks, one of the lions is missing a leg, the fountain doesn't work, the gardens that should have grass, flowers, etc., are dry, among other details.
La plaza y sus alrededores estaban limpios, sin embargo es evidente que el monumento no ha recibido el mantenimiento adecuado en mucho tiempo, creo que necesita ser restaurado para recuperar su belleza original. Por ejemplo la base donde está la estatua, recubierta con losas de mármol gris, tiene varias grietas, a uno de los leones le falta una pata, la fuente no funciona, los jardines que deberían tener grama, flores, etc., están secos, entre otros detalles.
Even so, the square and its monument are still an attractive place to visit and look at. The environment is super nice with all those trees, and on one side are installed some equipment for outdoor exercise. Well, I say goodbye with a couple of general shots from different angles.
Aun así la plaza y su monumento siguen siendo un lugar atractivo para visitar y mirar. El entorno es súper agradable con todos esos árboles, y a un lado están instalados unos aparatos para hacer ejercicio al aire libre. Bueno, me despido con un par de tomas generales desde distintos ángulos.
