Hello to all the Hivers that make life in this beautiful Black And White community. Today I bring you another series of artistic self-portraits, this time using natural light. I have had many ideas in mind and you know that it is not easy to take pictures of yourself, but in the absence of models I use myself and at the same time I take advantage of this form of artistic expression to explore myself introspectively, accepting all my angles (my flaws and virtues).
Accepting, literally, all my lights and shadows that you will observe in each portrait, as well as the different emotions that totally alter the facial expression from one portrait to another. In the exercise of being in front of a camera and facing oneself and one's own reflection in full, observing how the depth of a thought is captured in the nude. I leave you, then, this series with a brief explanation of what self-portraiture means to me.

Hola a todos los Hivers que hacen vida en esta hermosa comunidad de Black And White. Hoy les traigo otra serie de autorretratos artísticos, esta vez usando luz natural. He tenido muchas ideas en mente y ya saben que no es fácil tomarse fotos a uno mismo, pero a falta de modelos me uso a mí misma y al mismo tiempo aprovecho esta forma de expresión artística para autoexplorarme de manera introspectiva, aceptando todos mis ángulos (mis defectos y virtudes).
Aceptando, literalmente, todas mis luces y mis sombras que observarán en cada retrato, así como las distintas emociones que alteran totalmente la expresión facial entre un retrato y otro. En el ejercicio de estar frente a una cámara y enfrentarse contra uno mismo y su propio reflejo en pleno, observando cómo se ve la profundidad de un pensamiento plasmado al desnudo. Les dejo, entonces, esta serie con una breve explicación de lo que para mí significa el autorretrato.
Many see the self-portrait as a reflection of narcissism or as a way to seek attention, an attention focused solely on the physical "beauty" of the person being photographed, all from a superficial point of view. And I put the word "beauty" in quotation marks, because what is beautiful for me, will not necessarily be the same for others; we all have a different concept of beauty, so that concept may vary among all the people who inhabit this planet.
Muchos ven el autorretrato como un reflejo de narcisismo o como una forma de buscar atención, una atención centrada únicamente en la “belleza” física del que se fotografía, todo desde un punto de vista superficial. Y coloco la palabra “belleza” entre comillas, pues lo que es bello para mí, no necesariamente lo será igual para los demás; todos poseemos un concepto de belleza distinto, por lo que ese concepto puede variar entre todas las personas que habitamos este planeta.
So, going back to the beginning, the premise of narcissism could be valid if we come across the typical "selfies" of the moment, monotonous and meaningless captures, which do not respond to any kind of concept or artistic expression. Acting in this way is what contributes to feed the ego and not to explore the inner world. The self-portrait as a means to express an intention, a feeling or various emotions helps a lot, even if it doesn't seem to.
Entonces, volviendo al principio, la premisa del narcisismo podría ser válida si nos topamos con los típicos “selfies” de momento, capturas monótonas y sin sentido, las cuales no responden a ningún tipo de concepto, ni de expresión artística. El accionar de esta forma es lo que contribuye a alimentar el ego y a no explorar el mundo interno. El autorretrato como medio para expresar una intención, un sentimiento o varias emociones ayuda en sobremanera, aunque no parezca.
There are so many personalities that we can have within ourselves... so many contradictory thoughts that run through our minds that in several shots we can look like two completely different people at the same time. With the portrait we can get to know ourselves better, play a role, face things we don't like about ourselves... face a reality we deny... create a character, a concept, an idea.
Son tantas las personalidades que podemos tener dentro de nosotros mismos… son tantos los pensamientos contradictorios que rondan por nuestra mente que en varias tomas podemos parecer dos personas a la vez completamente distintas. Con el retrato podemos conocernos mejor, interpretar un papel, enfrentarnos a cosas que no nos gustan de nosotros mismos… enfrentar una realidad que negamos… crear un personaje, un concepto una idea.
Or simply use it as a thermometer to measure our daily mood. A few years ago the photographic work of a girl going through severe depression went viral. She was admitted to a mental institution and was allowed to keep one thing, to which she asked to keep her camera. And that was her refuge in her worst days inside the mental health institution; with that she made catharsis while portraying a painful reality.
O simplemente usarlo como termómetro para medir nuestro estado de ánimo al día. Hace unos años se hizo viral el trabajo fotográfico de una muchacha que atravesaba por una depresión grave. Fue internada en un psiquiátrico y le permitieron quedarse con una cosa, a lo que ella pidió que le dejaran su cámara fotográfica. Y ese fue su refugio en sus peores días dentro de la institución de salud mental; con eso ella hacía catarsis mientras retrataba una realidad dolorosa.
His reality and the reality of millions of people going through a similar situation. And the powerful thing about this work is that those millions of people were able to see it and not feel alone. That is why art will always be powerful and necessary in society, art connects us all, it reminds us that we are not alone and that we are not as different from each other as we think. That feelings and emotions are universal, that there are no cultural barriers.
Su realidad y la realidad de millones de personas que atraviesan una situación similar. Y lo potente de este trabajo es que esos millones de personas pudieron verlo y no sentirse solas. Por eso el arte siempre será poderoso y necesario en la sociedad, el arte nos conecta a todos, nos recuerda que no estamos solos y que no somos tan diferentes los unos de los otros como pensamos. Que los sentimientos y las emociones son universales, que no hay barreras culturales.
The world has to practice seeing beyond appearances and not judging so much. To see beyond a gesture, a glance, a simple smile... the human being is much more than that. Prejudice sometimes blinds and censors; prejudice sometimes locks us in solitude and makes us believe that we are not valid. And exclusion divides us, that prejudice separates and clouds critical thinking, creates resentment... and people dominated by resentment are often quite easy to manipulate.
El mundo tiene que practicar ver más allá de las apariencias y no juzgar tanto. Ver más allá de un gesto, de una mirada, de una simple sonrisa… el ser humano es mucho más que eso. El prejuicio a veces ciega y censura; el prejuicio a veces nos encierra en la soledad y nos hace creer que no somos válidos. Y la exclusión nos divide, ese prejuicio separa y nubla el pensamiento crítico, crea resentimientos… y la gente dominada por el resentimiento suele ser bastante fácil de manipular.
It would seem that I have strayed from the topic, but I have not. My point is that people have always tried to separate art from society because all artistic expression leads us to question things; it leads society to ask itself if the world is working as it should, if certain policies are fair... art unveils the evil that abounds disguised as goodness, art tells us the truth that no one wants to hear and reminds us that we are part of a universal whole.
Whether we express ourselves through music, writing, photography, painting, visual arts in general... art will always be necessary because without it the world would be very boring. What would become of us without it? I don't see a possible world without a means of artistic expression. Pareciera que me hubiese desviado del tema, pero no. Mi punto es que la gente siempre ha intentado separar el arte de la sociedad porque toda expresión artística nos lleva a cuestionarnos las cosas; lleva a la sociedad a preguntarse si el mundo está funcionando como debiera, si ciertas políticas son justas… el arte desvela la maldad que abunda disfrazada de bondad, el arte nos dice la verdad que nadie quiere oír y nos recuerda que somos parte de un todo universal.
Ya sea que nos expresemos a través de la música, la escritura, la fotografía, la pintura, las artes plásticas en general… el arte siempre será necesario porque sin él el mundo sería muy aburrido. ¿Qué sería de nosotros sin él? No veo un mundo posible sin un medio de expresión artística. Espero que hayan tenido un feliz inicio de semana y que sigan expresándose a través de este arte tan maravilloso como lo es la fotografía. ¡Saludos a todos!
