On April 16, 1746 the British government defeated the Jacobites at the Battle of Culloden. Honestly, I am not sure if I had ever heard of Culloden before going there but now I won't forget it!
The Culloden Battlefield is close to Inverness and the Gealic Society of Inverness hosts an annual commemeration of the battle. We just happened to show up for the 100th such ceremony.
It was such a moving experience to see that even after almost 280 years this battle still affects people and they gather to remember it. It was especially touching to see people from both Scotland and England coming together to celebrate the unity they now experience.
Unfortunately, time at the battlefield was short, just enough for the ceremony and lunch. After that it was on to Clava Cairns.
The Clava Cairns are ancient tombs built out of piles of stones. I'll talk more about them when I post the digital photos.
During our travels around the Highlands we stayed in the village of Carrbridge. The village is best known for this ruin, an old bridge.
The Carrbridge Packhorse Bridge was built in 1717 to carry funeral processions over the River Dulnain to Duthil Church. The bridge was also called the Coffin Bridge because of this function.
In 1829 a flood damaged the bridge and left it in its current condition. The village continues on as a tourist hub for the area.
