The Saryu River is a major river of the Kumaon region in the state of Uttarakhand. It is also the largest tributary of the Kali River. The Saryuk originating from Sarmul falls into the Kali river at Pancheshwar, flowing through Kapkot, Bageshwar, Seraghat and Rameshwar. When this Kali river meets Ghaghara at Brahmaghat near Bahraich, the river formed by their confluence is again called Saryuhi, on the banks of which the city of Ayodhya is situated. The Saryu river forms the south-eastern boundary between Pithoragarh and Almora districts. [temperate and sub-tropical forests are found in the river's runoff zone
Situated in the northern part of Saryu-Bageshwar district, it originates from a place called Sarmul near the Nanda Kot mountain. Initially, it flows in a south-west direction for about 50 km and is joined by the Pungar and Lahoor rivers. The river then turns south and flows through Bageshwar Nagar, where it meets the Gomti. After leaving Bageshwar, it flows mainly in the south-east direction for the next 65 km. 20 km above its mouth, it meets Ramganga, which is three times bigger than it in size. After traveling about 130 km long, Saryu reaches Pancheshwar on the Nepali border, where it falls into the Kali river.
Sharda Canal has been taken out by constructing a dam on the Saryu river near Tanakpur in Uttarakhand. It is one of the largest canal systems in India. At many other places, canals have been taken out by feeder pumps, which are known as Sharda Sahayak. Such tributary canals have been taken out from places named Dohri Ghat, Bilthara Road and Rajesultanpur.
