Becoming a Liquidity Provider in the SWAP.HIVE:PWR Pool | Hive Power Ventures
On Hive, when you want to buy or sell a token, there are two main options:
- Use an order book, where you can find or place buy and sell offers.
- Use a liquidity pool, where a simple swap is enough to complete the transaction.
The advantage of an order book is that you can set the price at which you want to sell or buy something, but this also means waiting (and hoping) for someone willing to accept your terms.
A liquidity pool, on the other hand, doesn’t allow you to set the terms of the transaction, but it offers the great advantage of letting you buy or sell immediately at a price that is usually better than what you might get on an order book.
Liquidity pools also offer another very interesting opportunity: anyone can provide liquidity to a pair of tokens and, in return, receive a share of the fees generated by swaps in that pool, as well as additional rewards that may be specifically distributed to liquidity providers.
Of course, there’s a downside, otherwise liquidity pools would be too good to be true: the disadvantage lies in the risk of impermanent loss, which occurs when the two tokens in the liquidity pair experience different price changes.
Impermanent loss is a concept that needs to be thoroughly understood before becoming a liquidity provider. However, from what I’ve explained, it’s already clear that the risk becomes minimal when the two tokens in the liquidity pool have values closely linked to each other. This is the case with the SWAP.HIVE:PWR pair.
PWR: Hive Power Ventures
PWR is a token created by @empoderat with a very interesting feature: its value is pegged to Hive.
This means that any change in the value of HIVE is mirrored by a corresponding change in the value of PWR.
Of course, the change in PWR’s value isn’t automatic—the peg has to be maintained artificially—but as long as the process succeeds, the SWAP.HIVE:PWR liquidity pool doesn’t carry the risk of impermanent loss.
In this case, becoming a liquidity provider becomes a very attractive option, as it allows you to earn rewards from the pool with relatively moderate risks.
Why do I say “relatively” moderate?
Because the PWR token might not be able to maintain its peg forever. In the case of extreme fluctuations in HIVE’s value, for instance, there could be a deviation in the values of the two tokens, and if this isn’t promptly resolved, it would lead to impermanent loss for the liquidity providers.
Providing liquidity to a token pair always carries some risk, as the possibility of a depeg cannot be entirely ruled out.
However, the PWR token has already been around for about a year, which in the crypto world is not a short time. During this period, PWR has consistently maintained its soft peg with HIVE, demonstrating the strength of the project and leading me to finally make a small investment.
It’s a small amount that I obtained from selling some Layer 2 tokens I wasn’t interested in, but it’s a start, and I plan to gradually increase my position over time.
In the meantime, I’ll be able to benefit from an APR which exceeds 20%, paid half in SWAP.HIVE and half in PWR, which I can periodically reinvest into the pool itself.
This way, I have a new project to follow and a third liquidity pool to which I provide liquidity and from which I can earn rewards.
My medium- to long-term goal is to turn this new adventure into an additional source of passive income that can help me grow my account on Hive. :)

Una Nuova Pool di Liquidità in cui Investire: SWAP.HIVE:PWR | Hive Power Ventures
Su Hive quando si desidera vendere o acquistare un token ci sono due modalità principali:
- ricorrere ad un order book, nel quale è possibile trovare e/o fare offerte e domande di acquisto/vendita;
- utilizzare una pool di liquidità, dove basta un semplice swap per completare la transazione.
Il vantaggio dell'order book è che possiamo scegliere noi il prezzo a cui vogliamo vendere o acquistare qualcosa, ma questo significa anche dover aspettare (e sperare) che arrivi qualcuno disposto ad accettare le nostre condizioni.
Una pool di liquidità, invece, non ci consente di scegliere le condizioni a cui vogliamo completare l'operazione, ma ci offre l'enorme vantaggio di poter procedere immediatamente alla vendita/acquisto di ciò che ci interessa ad un prezzo che, generalmente, è migliore di quello che potremmo ottenere in un order book.
Le pools di liquidità offrono poi un'altra opportunità molto interessante: chi vuole può infatti fornire liquidità ad una coppia qualsiasi di tokens e, in cambio, ottenere sia una parte delle fees generate da chi effettua uno swap in quella pool di liquidità, sia delle ricompense extra che possono essere appositamente previste e distribuite ai liquidity providers.
Ovviamente c'è però anche un rovescio della medaglia, dato che se no le pool di liquidity sarebbero fin troppo belle: lo svantaggio è dato dalla possibilità di incorrere nella impermanent loss, che è una perdita in cui il liquidity provider incorre quando i due token a cui fornisce liquidità subiscono variazioni di prezzo diverse.
L'impermanent loss è un concetto da approfondire e capire bene prima di diventare un liquidity provider, anche se, da quello che ho scritto, già si può intuire che il rischio diventi minimo quando i due token presenti nella liquidity pools hanno valori fra loro collegati: è questo il caso della coppia SWAP.HIVE:PWR.
PWR: Hive Power Ventures
PWR è infatti un token creato da @empoderat che ha una particolarità molto interessante: il suo valore è ancorato a quello di Hive.
Ciò significa che ad ogni variazione del valore di HIVE corrisponde anche una pari variazione del valore di PWR.
Ovviamente la variazione nel valore del token PWR non è automatica - il peg deve essere mantenuto artificialmente - ma fintanto che l'operazione riesce, la pool di liquidità SWAP.HIVE:PWR non rischia di generare alcuna impermanent loss.
Ecco che quindi, in questo caso, diventare un liquidity provider diventa un'operazione estremamente allettante, dato che consente di ottenere le ricompense offerte dalla pool a fronte di rischi che sono abbastanza moderati.
Perchè dico "abbastanza" moderati?
Perchè il token PWR potrebbe non essere in grado di mantenere il peg per sempre: a fronte di variazioni eccessive nel valore del token HIVE, ad esempio, potrebbe verificarsi uno scostamento nel valore dei due token e questo, se non risolto prontamente, genererebbe una perdita da impermanent loss per i liquidity providers.
Fornire liquidità ad una coppia di tokens presenta, perciò, sempre dei rischi, perchè il depeg non è un rischio che può ritenersi in assoluto scongiurato.
Tuttavia il token PWR ha alle spalle già circa un anno di vita, che nel mondo delle criptovalute non è poco tempo: in questo lasso di tempo PWR è riuscito a mantenere costantemente il suo soft-peg con HIVE, dimostrando una grande solidità del progetto e portandomi, così, a decidere finalmente di effettuare un piccolo investimento.
Si tratta di una piccola somma che ho ricavato dalla vendita di alcuni token layer 2 in cui non ero interessato, ma intanto è un inizio e conto nel tempo di incrementare sempre più la mia posizione.
Nel mentre potrò così beneficiare di un APR che supera il 20% e che viene pagato per metà in SWAP.HIVE e per l'altra in PWR, che posso così periodicamente reinvestire nella pool stessa.
In questo modo ho un nuovo progetto da seguire ed una terza pool di liquidità a cui fornisco liquidità e dalla quale posso ottenere delle ricompense.
Il mio obiettivo di medio-lungo termine sarà quello di cercare di rendere anche questa nuova avventura la fonte di una ulteriore piccola rendita passiva che possa aiutarmi a far crescere il mio account su Hive :)
