New Modes, New Features, New Cards: That's How a Game Keeps Going
Once, I described Splinterlands as an ever-evolving universe, thanks to the steady and skillful work of a development team that, over the years, has introduced countless innovations—continually improving and expanding a game that today appears, compared to a few years ago, incredibly broader, more diverse, polished, and deep.
The life cycle of a game usually isn’t very long: if the initial idea is good, users will arrive—but if you’re not able to support what you’ve created, keeping it up to date and constantly renewing player interest with updates and improvements, then users will leave, turning a successful game into a wasteland.
I’ve lost count of the games I’ve seen explode—in a good sense—only to die within weeks or months.
Very few games are able to endure for years.
And those that manage to go even further are so rare that their names are often known even outside the gaming world: Call of Duty, League of Legends, Minecraft, Fortnite—to name a few—have become global phenomena, with millions and millions of followers and products that have gone far beyond the simple concept of "video game."
And one thing that almost all—if not all—of these hugely successful titles have in common is precisely the constant support they’ve always received: new modes, characters, maps, items, skins, events, and more, made continually available to players, so there’s always something new to experience and enjoy.
The ability to renew and expand is one of the secrets behind these games' success.
And when I look at Splinterlands, reading posts published by the official account or by users I follow, I’ve been seeing exactly that for years (not just days or months, but years): a game that evolves constantly, that—even at the risk of making mistakes—reshuffles the deck in an effort to improve, providing new cards, modes, and features that allow players to always have something new to play with.
Now, I’m not saying that just because of this, Splinterlands can hope to one day replicate the success of the industry giants with millions of players.
That would be nice (obviously), but the road to success is much tougher and requires far more—not least a good dose of luck.
Still, the fact that Splinterlands and its team have been putting in, I repeat, for years, so much effort into making the game increasingly modern, attractive, fun, and diverse is, in my opinion, something not to be underestimated.
A game that keeps improving is a game that, at some point, might manage to seize the opportunity to go viral, becoming the talk of the town and reaching a huge audience.
A game that looks good, with a graphic up to date, modes that suit both new and veteran players, and frequent updates introducing new mechanics and cards, is a game with the potential to appeal.
And in the world of gaming, that has value—tremendous value.
Having a great idea is useless if you’re not able to expand and support it, making it sustainable over time.
Splinterlands, in this regard, at least in my opinion, is doing an excellent job, presenting itself to the world in a form that is constantly being improved and made ever more attractive.
Of course, there’s still room for improvement—no doubt about that—but seeing this constant support the game receives is one of the main reasons I’m still trying to increase my investment in the game itself... and who knows, maybe one day that will bring a pleasant surprise!

Un Universo in Costante Evoluzione
Una volta ho definito Splinterlands un Universo in costante evoluzione grazie alla costante e sapiente opera di un team di sviluppo che negli anni è stato capace di introdurre tantissime novità, migliorando ed espandendo sempre più un gioco che oggi si presenta, rispetto a qualche anno fa, incredibilmente più ampio, vario, rifinito e profondo.
Il ciclo vitale di un gioco in genere non è molto lungo: se l'idea iniziale è buona, arrivano gli utenti, ma se poi non si è capaci di supportare ciò che si è creato, mantenendolo al passo con i tempi e rinnovando costantemente l'interesse dei giocatori con updates ed aggiornamenti, allora gli utenti se ne vanno, trasformando un gioco di successo in una landa desolata.
Ho perso il conto dei giochi che ho visto esplodere - in senso positivo - e poi morire nel giro di poche settimane o mesi.
I giochi capaci di resistere per anni sono pochissimi.
Quelli in grado di andare ancora oltre sono talmente pochi che i loro nomi sono spesso noti anche al di fuori del mondo del gaming: Call of Duty, League of Ledends, Minecraft, Fortnite, per citarne alcuni, sono diventati dei fenomeni globali, con milioni e milioni di followers e prodotti che sono andati ben al di là del semplice "videogioco".
E una cosa che accomuna quasi tutte - se non tutti - questi titoli di enorme successo, è proprio il costante supporto che hanno sempre ricevuto: nuove modalità, personaggi, mappe, oggetti, skin, eventi e chi più ne ha più ne metta, resi continuamente disponibili ai giocatori, che così hanno sempre qualcosa di nuovo da sperimentare e con cui divertirsi.
Sapersi rinnovare ed ampliare è uno dei segreti del successo di questi giochi.
E quando guardo Splinterlands, leggendo i post pubblicati dall'account ufficiale o da utenti che seguo, vedo da anni (non da giorni o mesi, ma da anni) esattamente questo: un gioco che si evolve costantemente, che, a costo anche di sbagliare, cambia le carte in tavola cercando di migliorarsi, mettendo a disposizione nuove carte, modalità e funzionalità che consentano ai giocatori di avere sempre qualcosa di nuovo con cui giocare.
Ora, non voglio dire che solo per questo Splinterlands può sperare, un giorno, di ripetere il successo di colossi dell'industria videoludica da milioni di giocatori.
Sarebbe bello (ovviamente), ma la via per il successo è ben più ardua e richiede molto di più - non ultimo un bel po' di fortuna.
Eppure il fatto che Splinterlands ed il suo team stiano mettendo, lo ripeto, da anni, così tanto impegno nel rendere il gioco sempre più moderno, attrattivo, divertente e vario secondo me è un aspetto da non sottovalutare.
Un gioco che migliora sempre più è infatti un gioco che, ad un certo punto, può riuscire a centrare quell'occasione che lo aiuta a diventare virale, passando sulla bocca di tutti e raggiungendo un bacino di utenza enorme.
Un gioco che si presenta bene, con una veste grafica al passo con i tempi, modalità varie ed adatte sia ai giocatori nuovi che vecchi, updates frequenti che introducono nuove meccaniche e carte, è un gioco che ha il potenziale di piacere.
E nel mondo del gaming tutto ciò ha valore, tanto valore.
Non serve a niente avere una bella idea se poi non si è capaci di ampliarla e supportarla, così da renderla durevole nel tempo.
Splinterlands, in questo questo, almeno secondo me, sta invece facendo benissimo, presentandosi al mondo in una veste che viene costantemente migliorata e resa sempre più attrattiva.
Sicuramente c'è ancora spazio per migliorare, su questo non ci sono dubbi, ma vedere questo supporto costante che il gioco riceve è uno degli aspetti principali che tutt'ora mi porta a continuare a cercare di aumentare il mio investimento nel gioco stesso... e chissà che un giorno ciò non porti qualche gradita sorpresa!
