My adventure in Splinterlands began in the early days of the game, back when it was still called Steemmonsters. It was 2018, and I vividly remember that pioneer atmosphere: the cards were simple, the abilities were very few, and matches were easy to understand. There were no rulesets yet, and it only took a handful of games to learn every ability in the game. It was a time when everything was new, but also much more straightforward, I often picked the same cards by default without even thinking about it.
In a way, I could say that I grew as a player alongside the platform. I witnessed the game's evolution practically from its infancy. I learned the basics of mana optimization, I understood the importance of synergy between archons and monsters, and I began to appreciate the subtleties that were already emerging in the gameplay’s development.
Between 2019 and 2020, due to various personal reasons, and also because of a certain distrust in the crypto world that was recovering from several "scam" events like the Bitconnect crash and the collapse of BTC’s value, I stopped playing for a while. What I didn’t expect was how much the game would change in the meantime. When I came back, the Untamed edition had already ended and Chaos Legion and other advanced content were on the way. My first impression was complete shock.
The game I had left had become something much more complex and intricate. There were new abilities, new rulesets and, above all, incredibly powerful summoners that completely dominated the battlefield. I’m talking about legendary names like Yodin Zaku, Scarred Llama Mage, and Byzantine Kitty. These summoners didn’t just add new strategies, they changed the dynamics of the game I knew so well. My old decks suddenly felt weak, and defeats started piling up at a painful pace.
At that point, I had two choices, quit entirely, or accept the challenge and start studying again. I chose the latter.
I started observing, analyzing, and testing. I began with Rents, a quick way to try out powerful cards without the commitment of buying them right away. It’s an immediate and useful solution for those wanting to catch up, although in the long run, it can be costly without leaving you with any assets. So I took a further step, I began selling some of my old cards to gather funds and purchase more updated summoners. It was hard to part with some relics from the past, but it was necessary to effectively get back into the game.
And that’s when I learned a key lesson:
You shouldn’t fear new things.
You need the courage, the patience, and the will to test them, even if you make mistakes. Only then do you truly understand the potential of each new card and how to adapt it to your play style.
Today we are facing another great revolution: Conclave Arcana. The Bloodlines and the new abilities have introduced even more strategic depth. There are so many now that you’d need an encyclopedia to remember them all! Yet, even in this apparent chaos, I see opportunity.
Every novelty is a spark, a chance to grow. I understand those who feel overwhelmed, but my advice is simple:
Rent, test, experiment.
Use some DEC to try out a card you don’t know. Discover how it behaves under various conditions, and only then decide if it’s worth investing in. That’s how solid decks are built, mixing old and new, experience and experimentation.
My learning journey in Splinterlands hasn’t been linear, but every setback became a chance to grow. Today, thanks to everything I’ve learned, I feel more prepared than ever to face any rule, archon, or ability the future may bring, always keeping in mind that it takes both time and resources to keep up with the latest developments.

La mia avventura in Splinterlands è iniziata nei primi giorni del gioco, quando ancora si chiamava Steemmonsters. Era il 2018, e ricordo benissimo quell’atmosfera da pionieri: le carte erano semplici, le abilità pochissime e i match erano immediati da comprendere. Non esistevano ancora i ruleset, e bastava una manciata di partite per conoscere ogni abilità del gioco. Era un tempo in cui tutto era nuovo, ma anche molto più lineare, spesso sceglievo le stesse carte di default, senza neanche pensarci sopra.
In un certo senso, potrei dire che sono cresciuto come giocatore insieme alla piattaforma. Ho vissuto l’evoluzione del gioco praticamente dalla sua infanzia. Ho imparato le basi dell’ottimizzazione del mana, ho compreso l'importanza della sinergia tra archons e mostri, e ho iniziato ad apprezzare le sottigliezze che già allora si intravedevano nello sviluppo del gameplay.
Tra il 2019 e il 2020, per vari motivi personali, ma anche per una certa sfiducia nel mondo crypto, che si stava riprendendo da vari eventi "scam" come il crollo dei Bitconnect e i crollo del valore di BTC, ho smesso di giocare per un periodo. Quello che non mi aspettavo era quanto sarebbe cambiato il gioco nel frattempo. Quando sono tornato, l'edizione Untamed era già conclusa e stavano per arrivare Chaos Legion e altri contenuti ancora più avanzati. La mia prima impressione è stata uno shock totale.
Il gioco che avevo lasciato era diventato qualcosa di molto più complesso e articolato. C’erano nuove abilità, nuovi ruleset e, soprattutto, evocatori potentissimi che dominavano completamente il campo di battaglia. Mi riferisco a nomi ormai leggendari come Yodin Zaku, Scarred Llama Mage e Byzantine Kitty. Questi evocatori non solo aggiungevano nuove strategie, ma cambiavano le dinamiche del gioco che conoscevo così bene. I miei vecchi mazzi risultavano improvvisamente deboli, e le sconfitte si accumulavano con una facilità bruciante.
A quel punto avevo due scelte: mollare tutto, oppure accettare la sfida e rimettermi a studiare. Ho scelto la seconda.
Ho cominciato a osservare, analizzare e testare. Ho iniziato con i Rents, un metodo veloce per provare carte potenti senza l’impegno di acquistarle subito. È una soluzione immediata e utile per chi vuole rimettersi in pari, anche se, nel lungo periodo, può rivelarsi dispendiosa senza lasciarti asset in mano. Allora ho fatto un passo ulteriore: ho cominciato a vendere alcune delle mie vecchie carte per racimolare fondi e acquistare evocatori più aggiornati. È stato difficile separarmi da certe reliquie del passato, ma era necessario per potermi rimettere in gioco con efficacia.
Ed è stato in quel momento che ho imparato una lezione fondamentale:
Non bisogna temere le novità.
Bisogna avere il coraggio, la pazienza e la voglia di testarle, anche sbagliando. Solo così si capisce davvero il potenziale di ogni nuova carta e come adattarla al proprio stile di gioco.
Oggi ci troviamo di fronte a un'altra grande rivoluzione: Conclave Arcana. Le Bloodlines e le nuove abilità hanno introdotto una profondità strategica ancora maggiore. Sono talmente tante che, ormai, ci vorrebbe un’enciclopedia per ricordarle tutte! Eppure, anche in questa fase di apparente caos, vedo l’opportunità.
Ogni novità è uno stimolo, una possibilità di crescere. Capisco bene chi si sente sopraffatto, ma il mio consiglio è semplice:
Affittate, provate, sperimentate.
Usate qualche DEC per testare una carta che non conoscete. Scoprite come si comporta in varie condizioni, e solo dopo decidete se vale la pena investirci davvero. È così che si costruiscono mazzi solidi, mescolando vecchio e nuovo, esperienza e sperimentazione.
La mia learning journey in Splinterlands non è stata lineare, ma ogni battuta d’arresto è diventata un’occasione per crescere. Oggi, grazie a tutto quello che ho imparato, mi sento più preparato che mai ad affrontare qualsiasi regola, archon o abilità che il futuro ci riserverà, tenendo presente che bisogna sempre impegnare tempo e fondi per stare al passo con le novità.
