Hey All,
My personal laptop was dying with slow speed and used to hang quite often if I was multi tasking i.e. had different applications opened. It came to a stage that we started thinking of buying a new laptop and we were also ready to spend Rs.70K+ INR which is equal to $850+ at this cost one can buy a decent configuration laptop. But then something struck to my mind and I started to explore my system and understand what could be the problem of laptop being so slow. Here is the configuration of my laptop
Device name DESKTOP-3MJVXXX
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-10210U CPU @ 1.60GHz 1.60 GHz
Installed RAM 8.00 GB (7.88 GB usable)
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
So based on the configuration, I thought it might be the RAM issue and then I thought of upgrading it to 16 GB. This was just a thought and when I consluted an Urban Clap engineer about my laptop upgrade to 16 GB RAM then he suggested that RAM is not a problem but rather its the hard disk issue and it would be better that we replace this HDD [Hard Disk Drive] to SSD [Solid State Drive]. To which I said ok and what will it cost me was my next question to him. After all the negotiations and sorts of discussions it drilled down to Rs.4K INR which is close to $45+. Silently I said to my self that this would be great if spedning $45 works here and I would not need to buy a new personal laptop for time being and this would SAVE me a hell lot of money. Before I could make up my mind and agree upon upgrading my laptop hardisk to SSD. I did some google search to find out the difference and here is all the summary to it at a high level on the difference between and HDD & SDD hard drive.
Comparison Between HDD and SSD
Feature | HDD (Hard Disk Drive) | SSD (Solid State Drive) |
---|---|---|
Full Form | Hard Disk Drive | Solid State Drive |
Speed | Slower Speed i.e. (50–150 MB/s) | Faster Speed i.e. (200–5000+ MB/s) |
Durability | Is prone to damage | Is more more durable |
Noise | You can hear the spinning sound | No sound at all its completely silent |
Power Consumption | Higher | Lower |
Cost | Cheaper per Giga Byte | Expensive per Giga Byte |
Boot Time | Slower (30–60 seconds) | Faster (5–20 seconds) |
Ideal Use | Budget storage, large files | Fast performance, OS, applications |
Upon understanding what SSD is capable for, I immediately made up my mind to upgrade my laptop hard disk to SSD and then decide what to do next. Whether to buy a new laptop or continue working on the exitsiting one with the upgraded hard disk. Here is the Task Manager snapshot after the SSD upgrade. Earlier the CPU, Memory and Disk usage would be close to 100% usage making the laptop slower and now all these parameters are well within their ranges making the laptop work at a blazing speed now.
Ok now before I conclude, I would say that it was worth spending $45+ for the upgrade and right now my laptop is working blazing fast. I can say its far much better almost 100% better when it had an HDD drive. Therefore I would recommend before you plan to buy a new laptop know your system as sometimes some hardware upgrades can do the job to significantly improve performance, and you may not need to spend money on a new device. Well this should be it for todays post on - "Laptop - Know Your System - Boost Your Laptop Speed Instantly - My SSD Upgrade Experience"... Cheers
