From Collection Power to SPS Staked: Explanation, Possible Effects and Considerations!
Two days ago, Splinterlands published a post (Splinterlands Town Hall Summary - May 15th, 2023!) in which announced the end of the Collection Power function, which will be replaced by the staking of Splintershards (SPS) tokens, which are the governance tokens of Splinterlands.
The transition from Collection Power to the staking of SPS tokens will occur at the end of the second quarter of 2023 and thus in a little over 2 months.
Splinterlands has published a table showing the stacked SPS requirement that will be needed to receive 100% of the rewards in each league.
Reading some of the posts and comments I noticed that many players got a bit confused because they understood that the new requirement will have the same functionality as Collection Power but it won't be like that.
This is why I decided to write this post.
The Collection Power is a requirement to play and enter in a league and this means that if you do not exceed the CP threshold you cannot enter and play in a league.
The SPS staked requirement is not a playing requirement and does not prevent entry into a league.
This means that a player who plays in the Diamond I league today and has 10K SPS staked will be able to continue playing in the Diamond I league even when the SPS staked requirement will be active but will receive reduced rewards compared to a player who plays in the same league and has a higher amount of SPS.
Today 18 May 2023 an SPS token has a value of $0.0228 (Lowest Ask Value).
Based on this market value, I calculated the total cost in dollars for each staked SPS requirement from the table published by Splinterlands.
What will be the percentage reduction in Rewards for those who do not meet the requirements of the league they play in?
Many players have thought about a reduction in rewards directly proportional to the amount of SPS missing to reach a certain requirement but this will not be the case because as written in the post by Splinterlands the reduction will be calculated according to a "Diminishing returns formula ".
In the Splinterlands discord channel @vugtis has posted a table with the calculation of percentage reductions in rewards for those who do not reach the SPS staked requirement.
As you can see from the calculations in the table below, anyone playing in the Champion I league with a staked amount of 206K SPS (-50% of the requirement) will receive a -20% reduction on the rewards they receive today and not -50% as many players thought when looking at the table published by Splinterlands.
It will not be mandatory to buy SPSs because there will be a market to buy and sell temporary delegations of SPS tokens.
The change between Collection Power and SPS Staked is not a newly announced change because it has been announced a very long time ago.
I have always staked all the SPS tokens I have obtained and to date I have accumulated an amount of 59151.59 SPS staked.
With this amount of SPS staked I will be able to play up to the Gold I league without having penalties on rewards.
My current gaming goal, however, is to play stably in Diamond leagues that will have higher SPS requirements.
For this reason I have raised my accumulation goal for SPS staked tokens which used to be 100K and is now 200K SPS staked.
Based on the new requirement and with my 59k SPS amount and if the requirement was active already today playing in the Diamond I league would result in a decrease in rewards of just over -30%.
Over the past couple of days I have read posts and comments from players who are disappointed by this change but also posts and comments from players who are enthusiastic.
I do not believe that the introduction of the SPS staked requirement will have any negative effects on the Splinterlands ecosystem in the long run.
SPS tokens will have an important new use case.
Those who have a lot of bots will have a major reduction in rewards.
Those who want to play in the higher leagues will be able to rent a SPS delegate and the market will set a cost per SPS delegate relative to the rewards that can be earned, and if the values are as they are now I believe this cost will be relatively low.
Are the SPS requirements too high?
Perhaps yes, I would have lowered these levels at least initially perhaps planning a gradual increase because every change needs to be assimilated and understood and above all every change needs a period of adaptation but I don't believe, as I have read in some comments, that this change will cause the death of Splinterlands.
In my opinion Splinterlands will die if it doesn't improve the gameplay experience for players and if it facilitates bots but on Splinterlands the development is continuous as the introduction of improvements and finally something is moving also in terms of fighting bots.
I've always seen bots as the main problem for a game like Splinterlands and when I voted for the proposal on the introduction of anti-bot measures in the Modern Format I wished I had a lot of staked SPSs to have more weight in this decision.
I'm glad the anti-bot proposal passed and I'm honest, if the anti-bot proposal had not passed I would have totally changed my approach as a player and investor.
I now see a glimmer of light in the future of my favourite blockchain game and look forward to the anti-bot measures being implemented in Modern Format's Ranked Battles.
There are millions of players who play web 2.0 games every day that have no rewards and do so for fun while also spending money.
Blockchain-based games have a dual aspect because in addition to fun, they also offer the possibility of earning tokens and having ownership of the game's NFTs.
I play several blockchain games but Splinterlands, almost 5 years after its launch, is the most complete blockchain-based game of any I play or have tried.
When I find a blockchain based game that is as well structured and with as much core gameplay as Splinterlands then I will consider what to do but at the moment I can't find any competitors that can compete with Splinterlands and I continue to invest and increase the battle strength of my card collection.
If before I had the goal of playing stably in Diamond leagues I now have the same goal as before but I also have the goal of accumulating 200K SPS staked.
If the rewards of the Diamond and Champion leagues will be higher in value than the cost of the SPS staked tokens I will buy a SPS delegation otherwise not.
One effect that I believe the replacement of Collection Power with staked SPSs will bring will be the decrease in value of cards that are of little use in battle.
In fact it will always be important to use strong cards in battle to increase the rating score but I think those cards that have a high CP but have little utility in battle will lose value because the CP score will no longer be an important element as before.
In my activity of optimising my card collection I have always sold cards that I considered to be of little use in battle in order to buy cards that are useful to me in battle.
In conclusion I will share my latest upgrade goals that I had shared in my previous post and which I achieved today thanks to the Bid purchase offers I made earlier.
Five months ago I had made a bid purchase for the Grund card I wanted to upgrade from level 3 to level 4.
Today I achieved this goal and added a card with the Trample ability to my collection, which will be very useful in battles that have specific rulesets such as battles that have the Stampede ruleset.
I also leveled up 3 summoners of the Chaos Legion edition:
- Tarsa: level 7 -> level 8
- Kelya Frendul: level 7 -> level 8
- Obsidian: level 7 -> level 8
As you can see I am not worried about the future introduction of the SPS staked requirement and continue to increase the battle strength of my card collection.
What has always preoccupied me in the past and still does is the presence of bots which I hope will be phased out or at least highly disincentivised.
I hope with this post I have cleared up the doubts of those who did not fully understand the effects of the change from Collection Power to the requirement for staked SPSs.

Dal Collection Power al Requisito SPS staked: Spiegazione, Possibili Effetti e Considerazioni!
Due giorni fa Splinterlands ha pubblicato un post (Splinterlands Town Hall Summary - May 15th, 2023!) in cui ha annunciato la fine della funzione del Collection Power che lascerà il posto allo staking dei token Splintershards (SPS) che sono i token di governance di Splinterlands.
Il passaggio dal Collection Power allo staking dei token SPS avverrà alla fine del secondo quarto del 2023 e quindi tra poco più di 2 mesi.
Splinterlands ha pubblicato una tabella che mostra il Requisito di SPS staked che servirà per ricevere il 100% delle ricompense in ogni lega.
Leggendo alcuni post e commenti ho notato che molti giocatori hanno fatto un pò di confusione perchè hanno capito che il nuovo requisito avrà la stessa funzionalità del Collectiono Power ma non sarà così.
Il Collection Power è un requisito di gioco e di ingresso in una lega e questo significa che se non superi la soglia di CP non puoi entrare e giocare in una lega.
Il requisito SPS staked non è un requisito di gioco e non impedisce l'ingresso in una lega.
Il requisito SPS staked determinerà solo le rewards e se non raggiunto produrrà una diminuzione delle rewards ma non le annullerà.
Questo significa che il giocatore che gioca oggi in lega Diamond I e ha 10K SPS staked potrà continuare a giocare in lega Diamond I anche quando sarà attivo il requisito SPS staked ma riceverà delle ricompense ridotte rispetto al giocatore che gioca nella stessa lega e che ha un quantitativo di SPS maggiore.
Oggi 18 maggio 2023 un token SPS ha un valore di 0.0228$ (Lowest Ask Value).
In base a questo valore di mercato ho calcolato il costo totale in dollari per ogni requisito SPS staked della tabella pubblicata da Splinterlands.
Quale sarà la riduzione percentuale delle Rewards per chi non raggiunge i requisiti della lega in cui gioca?
Molti giocatori hanno pensato a una riduzione delle rewards direttamente proporzionale al quantitatito di SPS mancante per raggiungere un determinato requisito ma non sarà così perchè come scritto nel post da Splinterlands la riduzione sarà calcolata in base a una "Diminishing returns formula".
Nel canale discord di Splinterlands @vugtis ha pubblicato una tabella con il calcolo delle riduzioni percentuali delle ricompense per chi non raggiungerà il requisito SPS staked.
Come puoi vedere dai calcoli presenti nella tabella seguente chi giocherà in lega Champion I con un quantitativo di 206K SPS staked (-50% rispetto al requisito) riceverà una diminizione del -20% rispetto alle rewards che riceve oggi e non del -50% come molti giocatori hanno pensato guardando la tabella pubblicata da Splinterlands.
Non sarà obligatorio comprare gli SPS perchè ci sarà un mercato per acquistare e vendere delegazioni temporanee di token SPS.
Lo scambio tra Collection Power e SPS Staked non è una modifica annunciata da poco tempo perchè è una modifica annunciata da molto tempo.
Io ho sempre messo in staking tutti i token SPS che ho ottenuto e fino ad oggi ho accumulato un quantitativo di 59151.59 SPS staked.
Con questo quantitativo di SPS staked potrò giocare fino alla lega Gold I senza avere penalità sulle rewards.
Il mio obiettivo di gioco attuale è però giocare stabilmente nelle leghe Diamond che avranno requisiti in SPS più alti.
Per questo motivo ho innalzato il mio obiettivo di accumulo relativo ai token SPS staked che prima era 100K mentre adesso è di 200K SPS staked.
In base al nuovo requisito e con il mio quantitativo di 59k SPS e se il requisito fosse attivo già oggi giocare nella lega Diamond I mi comporterebbe una diminuzione delle rewards di poco superiore al -30%.
In questi due giorni ho letto posts e commenti di giocatori delusi da questa modifica ma anche post e commenti di giocatori entusiasti.
Io non credo che l'introduzione del requisito SPS staked porterà effetti negativi nel lungo periodo sull'ecosistema di Splinterlands.
I token SPS avranno un nuovo e importante caso d'uso.
Chi vorrà giocare nelle leghe più alte potrà noleggiare una delega SPS e il mercato stabilirà un costo per SPS delegato rapportato alle ricompense guadagnabili e se i valori dovessero essere quelli attuali credo che questo costo sarà relativamente basso.
Ci sono milioni di giocatori che giocano ogni giorno a giochi web 2.0 che non hanno ricompense e lo fanno per puro divertimento spendendo anche dei soldi.
I giochi basati su blockchain hanno un duplice aspetto perchè oltre al divertimento offrono anche la possibilità di guadagnare tokens e avere la proprietà degli NFTs del gioco.
I requisiti SPS sono troppo alti?
Forse si, io avrei abbassato questi livelli almeno inizialmente programmando magari un innalzamento graduale perchè ogni cambiamento ha bisogno di essere assimilato e compreso e soprattutto ogni cambiamento ha bisogno di un periodo di adattamento ma non credo, come ho letto in alcuni commenti, che questo cambiamento possa causare la morte di Splinterlands.
Secondo me Splinterlands morirà se non migliorerà l'esperienza di gioco dei giocatori e se faciliterà i bots ma su Splinterlands lo sviluppo è continuo come l'introduzione di miglioramenti e finalmente qualcosa si sta muovendo anche in ottica di contrasto ai bots.
Ho sempre visto nei bots il principale problema per un gioco come Splinterlands e quando ho votato la proposta sull'introduzione delle misure anti-bot nel Modern Format avrei voluto avere tanti SPS staked per avere più peso in questa decisione.
Sono contento che la proposta anti-bot sia passata con esito favorevole e sono sincero, se la proposta anti-bot non fosse passata avrei totalmente cambiato il mio approccio da giocatore e investitore.
Adesso vedo uno spiraglio di luce sul futuro del mio gioco blockchain preferito e non vedo l'ora che le misure anti-bot vengano applicate nelle Ranked Battles del Modern Format.
Gioco a diversi giochi blockchain ma Splinterlands, dopo quasi 5 anni dalla sua nascita, è il gioco basato su blockchain più completo di qualsiasi altro gioco a cui gioco o che ho provato.
Quando troverò un gioco basato su blockchain ben strutturato e con un gioco alla base come Splinterlands allora valuterò cosa fare ma al momento non trovo concorrenti in grado di competere con Splinterlands e io continuo ad investire e ad aumentare la forza in battaglia della mia collezione di carte.
Se prima avevo l'obiettivo di giocare stabilmente nelle leghe Diamond adesso ho lo stesso obiettivo di prima ma ho anche l'obiettivo di accumulare 200K SPS staked.
Se le ricompense delle leghe Diamond e Champion saranno superiori in valore del costo dei token SPS staked presi in delega acquisterò una delega altrimenti no.
Un effetto che credo porterà la sostituzione del Collection Power con gli SPS staked sarà la diminuzione di valore delle carte poco utili in battaglia.
Infatti sarà sempre importante utilizzare carte forti in battaglia per aumentare il punteggio di rating ma penso che perderanno valore quelle carte che hanno un alto CP ma hanno poca utilità in battaglia perchè il punteggio CP non sarà più un elemento importante quanto prima.
Nella mia attività di ottimizzazione della mia collezione di carte ho sempre venduto le carte che consideravo poco utili in battaglia per acquistare carte per me utili in battaglia.
In conclusione condivido i miei ultimi obiettivi di upgrade che avevo condiviso nel mio precedente post e che ho raggiunto oggi grazie alle offerte di acquisto Bid che ho effettuato in precedenza.
Cinque mesi fa avevo fatto un'offerta di acquisto per la carta Grund che volevo portare dal livello 3 al livello 4.
Oggi ho raggiunto questo obiettivo e ho aggiunto alla mia collezione una carta con l'abilità Trample che mi potrà essere molto utile in battaglie che hanno specifiche rulesets come ad esempio le battaglie che hanno la ruleset Stampede.
Ho anche portato al livello massimo 3 evocatori dell'edizione Chaos Legion:
- Tarsa: livello 7 -> livello 8
- Kelya Frendul: livello 7 -> livello 8
- Obsidian: livello 7 -> livello 8
Come vedi a me non preoccupa la futura introduzione del requisito SPS staked e continuo ad aumentare la forza in battaglia della mia collezione di carte.
Quello che mi ha sempre preoccupato in passato e mi preoccupa tutt'ora è la presenza dei bots che spero venga progressivamente eliminata o almeno altamente disincentivata.
Spero con questo post di aver chiarito i dubbi di chi non aveva ben compreso gli effetti del passaggio dal Collection Power al requisito degli SPS staked.
