On January 17, the General Sale of the Chaos Legion collection packs began and I participated by buying 747 packs of cards.
But the Chaos Legion collection is just the latest of the collections released by Splinterlands.
In fact, the cards present in the Splinterlands game belong to 8 different collections (or editions):
- Alpha
- Beta
- Promo
- Reward
- Untamed
- Dice
- Glaudius
- Chaos Legion
Reward cards can be found inside chests (daily and seasonal rewards).
Glaudius cards can be found inside Gladius Cases and can only be purchased if you belong to a Guild that has a level 2 Guild Store.
The Chaos Legion cards can be found inside the Chaos Legion packs that can be purchased from the Splinterlands shop section or from external markets.
All other card packs have all long since been sold and can only be purchased from markets outside of Splinterlands.
But who owns a pack of cards should keep it, open it or sell it?
Splinterlands Packs: To Open Or Not To Open?
The decision is obviously personal and above all it is not possible to know the content of a pack of cards before opening it as it is not possible to know its future market value and luck always plays an important role especially in the opening of a single pack of cards.
However, it is possible to calculate the estimated profit obtainable from opening a pack of cards:
Calculating the estimated value of a pack of cards is easy because the calculation is already available to players from the sites:
- Peakmonsters (https://peakmonsters.com/packs)
- Splintercards (https://www.splintercards.com/tool-packvalue.html)
Now I will calculate the Estimated Profit for each pack of cards starting with the most expensive packs of cards available today: the Alpha packs.
Alpha card packs
The Alpha card packs were the first card packs released by Splinterlands.
Those who started playing Splinterlands from the beginning had the opportunity to buy these card packs which are now worth a lot more than the initial purchase price.
There have been 300000 packs of Alpha cards released and there are 6460 in circulation.
Today February 22, 2022, the lowest selling value of an Alpha card pack is 235 HIVE = $227.48
On Hive Engine/Tribal Dex there are only 4 Alpha packs (ALPHA tokens) for sale.
Opening a card pack without having 5 legendary potions and 5 alchemical potions available is always a bad choice for all card packs except Alpha packs.
In fact when Alpha packs were released potions did not exist and therefore potions have no effect on opening an Alpha pack.
Based on information at https://peakmonsters.com/packs the estimated value of an Alpha pack is $202,036.
Because the purchase cost (market value) is greater than the estimated value, buying and opening a pack of Alpha cards produces a negative expected profit and is therefore not a worthwhile purchase at this time.
Beta card packs
By the time I became a Splinterlands player the Alpha packs had all been sold. From the Shop section of the Splinterlands website it was only possible to buy Beta packs that cost 2$.
Today, February 22, 2022, anyone who wants to purchase a Beta pack can only do so from external markets such as Hive Engine or TribalDex.
The lowest sales value of a Beta pack is 90 HIVE = $87.12.
With the release of Beta packs, Potions were also introduced.
Opening a pack of Beta cards without potions is never convenient and in fact the estimated value changes a lot in the case of opening the pack without potions and in the case of opening the pack with potions.
Estimated value (No Potion): $57,871.
Estimated value (Both Potion): $116,790.
Opening a Beta card pack without having a sufficient number of potions (5 Legendary + 5 Alchemical) produces a negative expected profit (loss): -29.2490$
Opening a Beta card pack using enough potions (5 Legendary + 5 Alchemical) produces a positive expected profit: +29.22$.
Orb card packs
In the Orb packs are the Promo edition cards.
There have been 200000 Orb packs released and there are 10426 packs in circulation.
Today, February 22, 2022, the lowest selling value of an Orb pack is 150 HIVE = $145.2
Also for Orb packs, potions are important when deciding to open an Orb pack.
Esteemed Value (No Potion): $29,361
Esteemed value (Both Potion): $65,644
Not a good time to buy or open an Orb pack based on current selling prices because expected profit is always a negative value.
Untamed card packs
In the Untamed card packs, there are cards from the Untamed edition.
There have been 1500000 Untamed packs released and there are 69751 packs in circulation.
Today, February 22, 2022, the lowest sales value of an Untamed card pack is 42 HIVE = $40,656.
Potions also play an important role in opening Untamed card packs:
Esteemed Value (No Potion): $18,658
Esteemed value (Both Potion): $34,805
As for the Orb card packs, it is not convenient to buy or open a card pack at this time because the expected profit is always negative, even if in the case of using both potions the expected loss is very small: -6.30$
Dice card packs
In the DICE card packs, there are cards from the DICE edition.
There have been 300000 DICE packs released and there are 8271 packs in circulation.
Today February 22, 2022 the lowest sales value of a DICE card pack is 44 HIVE = $42,592.
Potions also play an important role in opening DICE card packs:
Esteemed Value (No Potion): $19,796
Estimated value (Both Potion): 31,909$
As for Orb and Untamed card packs, it is not convenient to buy and open a card pack at this time because the expected profit is always negative (see image below).
Chaos Legion card packs
The Chaos Legion card packs are the only ones that can be purchased from the Shop section of Splinterlands.
To date, 7474596 packs of cards have been sold and just under half have been opened.
A pack of Chaos Legion cards has a cost of:
- 4$ - Splinterlands Shop Section.
- 3.10 HIVE = 3.00$ - TribalDex/Hive Engine
Note: only Chaos Legion packs purchased from the Shop section of Splinterlands are valid for participation in card airdrops and with the multiple purchase of card packs from the Shop section the purchase cost per pack decreases due to bonuses.
Opening a pack of Chaos Legion cards without potions is never convenient:
Esteemed value (No Potion): $2,566.
Esteemed value (Both Potion): $3,826
Today, February 22, you can only get a positive expected profit if you buy a pack of Chaos Legion cards from external markets such as TribalDex.
Summary
Today, February 22, anyone who wants to buy a pack of cards and open it should buy:
- one pack of Beta cards: Expected Profit: +$29.22 (using both potions)
- one pack of Chaos Legion cards: Expected Profit: +0.826$ (purchase from TribalDex and use of both potions)
All other purchase cases yield a negative expected profit and thus an estimated loss.
Obviously the profit and loss I have calculated are estimated values and not certain.
These estimated values will be more and more accurate as the number of packs of cards purchased increases, starting with at least 500+ packs as also stated in the note on the Peakmonsters website.
From Theory to Practice: 10 packs of Untamed cards opened
Now I'll move from theory to practice.
On May 31, 2021, I bought 100 packs of Untamed cards from the Shop section of the Splinterlands website, spent 200000 DEC tokens, and received a total of 110 packs (+10 bonus packs).
I opened 90 packs but still have 20 packs of Untamed cards to open.
Based on the values the DEC tokens had on May 31, 2021 each pack of cards cost me $1.65.
Today DEC tokens are worth a lot more than they were back then and if I look at the current value of DEC tokens I spent $5.92 per pack of Untamed cards.
If I open a pack of Untamed cards today I will have an estimated expected profit of +$28,435.
If, on the other hand, I decide to sell it at the best bid (BID) I get a guaranteed profit of +27.80$
The most logical choice would have been to choose the certain path for the uncertain one and I would have had to sell the packs of Untamed cards or wait for their value to go up but I eventually decided to open 10 of the packs of Untamed cards in my possession.
When the estimated profit is positive and is higher than the sales profit I always prefer to open card packs because:
- I enjoy playing Splinterlands and having extra cards in my collection is very helpful in winning game battles.
- opening card packs is fun and when I open them I do it with my daughter who is 8 years old and we have a lot of laughs together :)
Decision made let's see if my choice was a profitable one or not.
Obviously with only 10 packages to open it is very difficult that the estimated profit is equal to the real profit and most likely the real profit will be very far from the estimated profit...
Instead of opening one pack at a time my daughter Chiara and I chose to open 10 packs simultaneously.
The first cards we discovered were quite disappointing....
But then... Yeessssss
I quickly found a legendary but not just any legendary: Scarred Llama Mage.
I now have two Scarred LLama Mage in my card collection :)
The market value of Scarred Llama Mage is $318.09.
But the surprises are not over....
There are two more legendaries and also an epic card in gold version:
- High Priest Darius: value $30.80
- Dragon Jumper: value 97.73$.
- The Gorlodon (Gold version): value 134$
In the last 4 cards to be uncovered no other legendary but a useful War Chaang that has a value of $9.98.
Doing some math.
With 10 packs of Untamed cards I had an expected profit of $284.35.
I found cards with a total market value of $662.75.
The real profit is definitely higher than expected so I got really lucky :)
Conclusion
With today's post I wanted to show how to choose whether to buy, open, or sell a pack of Splinterlands cards based on the calculation of Expected/Estimated Profit.
Estimated profit is the element I consider the most when I need to purchase a pack of Splinterands cards.

Il 17 gennaio è iniziata la General Sale dei pacchi di carte della collezione Chaos Legion e io ho partecipato comprando 747 pacchi di carte.
Ma la collezione Chaos Legion è solo l'ultima delle collezioni rilasciate da Splinterlands.
Infatti le carte presenti nel gioco di Splinterlands appartengono a 8 collezioni (o edizioni) diverse:
- Alpha
- Beta
- Promo
- Reward
- Untamed
- Dice
- Glaudius
- Chaos Legion
Le carte Reward possono essere trovate all'interno dei forzieri (ricompense giornaliere e stagionali).
Le carte Glaudius si trovano all'interno dei Gladius Case e si possono acquistare solo se si appartiene ad una Guild che ha il Guild Store di livello 2.
Le carte Chaos Legion si trovano all'interno dei pacchi Chaos Legion acquistabili dalla sezione shop di Splinterlands o dai mercati esterni al gioco.
Tutti gli altri pacchi di carte sono stati venduti tutti da tempo ed è possibile acquistarli solo dai mercati esterni a Splinterlands.
Ma chi possiede un pacco di carte conviene che lo conservi, lo apra o conviene che lo venda?
La decisione è ovviamente personale e soprattutto non è possibile conoscere il contenuto di un pacco di carte prima di aprirlo come non è possibile conoscere il suo valore di mercato futuro e la fortuna gioca sempre un ruolo importante soprattutto nell'apertura di un singolo pacco di carte.
E' possibile però calcolare il profitto stimato ottenibile dall'apertura di un pacco di carte:
Calcolare il valore stimato di un pacco di carte è semplice perchè il calcolo è già pronto e messo a disposizione dei giocatori dai siti:
- Peakmonsters (https://peakmonsters.com/packs)
- Splintercards (https://www.splintercards.com/tool-packvalue.html)
Adesso calcolerò il Profitto Stimato per ogni pacco di carte iniziando dai pacchi di carte di maggior valore acquistabili oggi: i pacchi Alpha.
Alpha card packs
I pacchi di carta Alpha sono stati i primi pacchi di carte rilasciati da Splinterlands.
Chi ha iniziato a giocare a Splinterlands dall'inizio ha avuto la possibilità di comprare questi pacchi di carte che oggi hanno un valore molto alto rispetto al prezzo di acquisto iniziale.
Sono stati rilasciati 300000 pacchi di carte Alpha e in circolazione ce ne sono 6460.
Oggi 22 febbraio 2022, il valore di vendita più basso di un pacco di carta Alpha è di 235 HIVE = 227.48$
Su Hive Engine/Tribal Dex ci sono solo 4 pacchi Alpha (token ALPHA) in vendita.
Aprire un pacco di carte senza avere a disposizione 5 pozioni leggendarie e 5 pozioni alchemiche è sempre una scelta sbagliata per tutti i pacchi di carte tranne che per i pacchi Alpha.
Infatti quando sono stati rilasciati i pacchi Alpha le pozioni non esistevano e quindi le pozioni non hanno alcun effetto sull'apertura di un pacco Alpha.
In base alle informazioni su https://peakmonsters.com/packs il valore stimato di un pacco Alpha è di 202.036$.
Poichè il costo di acquisto (valore di mercato) è maggiore del valore stimato comprare e aprire un pacco di carte Alpha produce un profitto atteso negativo e quindi non è un acquisto al momento conveniente.
Beta card packs
Quando sono diventato un giocatore di Splinterlands i pacchi Alpha erano già stati tutti venduti. Dalla sezione Shop del sito di Splinterlands era possibile acquistare solo i pacchi Beta che avevano un costo di 2$.
Oggi 22 febbraio 2022 chi vuole acquistare un pacco di carte Beta può farlo solo dai mercati esterni come Hive Engine o TribalDex.
Il valore di vendita più basso di un pacco Beta è di 90 HIVE = 87.12$
Con il rilascio dei pacchi Beta sono state introdotte anche le Pozioni.
Aprire un pacco di carte Beta senza pozioni non è mai conveniente e infatti il valore stimato cambia molto nel caso di apertura del pacco senza pozioni e nel caso di apertura del pacco con le pozioni.
Valore stimato (No Potion): 57.871$
Valore stimato (Both Potion): 116.790$
Aprire un pacco di carte Beta senza avere un numero sufficiente di pozioni (5 Leggendarie + 5 Alchemiche) produce un profitto atteso negativo (perdita): -29.2490$
Aprire un pacco di carte Beta utilizzando un numero sufficiente di pozioni (5 Leggendarie + 5 Alchemiche) produce invece un profitto atteso positivo: +29.22$
Orb card packs
Nei pacchi di carte Orb ci sono le carte dell'edizione Promo.
Sono stati rilasciati 200000 pacchi Orb e in circolazione ci sono 10426 pacchi.
Oggi 22 febbraio 2022 il valore di vendita più basso di un pacco Orb è di 150 HIVE = 145.2$
Anche per i pacchi di carte Orb le pozioni sono importanti quando si decide di aprire un pacco di carte.
Valore stimato (No Potion): 29.361$
Valore stimato (Both Potion): 65.644$
Non è un buon momento per acquistare o aprire un pacco Orb in base ai prezzi attuali di vendita perchè il profitto atteso è sempre un valore negativo.
Untamed card packs
Nei pacchi di carte Untamed ci sono le carte dell'edizione Untamed.
Sono stati rilasciati 1500000 pacchi Untamed e in circolazione ci sono 69751 pacchi.
Oggi 22 febbraio 2022 il valore di vendita più basso di un pacco di carte Untamed è di 42 HIVE = 40.656$
Anche per l'apertura dei pacchi di carte Untamed le pozioni giocano un ruolo importante:
Valore stimato (No Potion): 18.658$
Valore stimato (Both Potion): 34.805$
Come per i pacchi di carte Orb anche per i pacchi di carte Untamed non è conveniente in questo momento acquistare o aprire un pacco di carte perchè il profitto atteso è sempre negativo anche se nel caso di utilizzo di entrambe le pozioni la perdita attesa è molto piccola: -6.30$
Dice card packs
Nei pacchi di carte DICE ci sono le carte dell'edizione DICE.
Sono stati rilasciati 300000 pacchi DICE e in circolazione ci sono 8271 pacchi.
Oggi 22 febbraio 2022 il valore di vendita più basso di un pacco di carte DICE è di 44 HIVE = 42.592$
Anche per l'apertura dei pacchi di carte DICE le pozioni giocano un ruolo importante:
Valore stimato (No Potion): 19.796$
Valore stimato (Both Potion): 31.909$
Come per i pacchi di carte Orb e Untamed anche per i pacchi di carte DICE non è conveniente in questo momento acquistare e aprire un pacco di carte perchè il profitto atteso è sempre negativo (vedi immagine seguente).
Chaos Legion card packs
I pacchi di carte Chaos Legion sono gli unici acquistabili dalla sezione Shop di Splinterlands.
Fino ad oggi sono stati venduti 7474596 pacchi di carte e poco meno della metà sono stati aperti.
Un pacco di carte Chaos Legion ha un costo di:
- 4$ - Sezione Shop di Splinterlands
- 3.10 HIVE = 3.00$ - TribalDex
Nota: solo i pacchi Chaos Legion acquistati dalla sezione Shop di Splinterlands sono validi per la partecipazione agli airdrop delle carte e con l'acquisto multiplo di pacchi di carte dalla sezione Shop il costo di acquisto per pacco diminuisce per effetto dei bonus.
Aprire un pacco di carte Chaos Legion senza pozioni non è mai conveniente:
Valore stimato (No Potion): 2.566$
Valore stimato (Both Potion): 3.826$
Oggi 22 febbraio è possibile ottenere un profitto atteso positivo solo nel caso di acquisto di un pacco di carte Chaos Legion dai mercati esterni come TribalDex.
Ricapitolando
Oggi 22 febbraio chi vuole comprare un pacco di carte e aprilo dovrebbe comprare:
- un pacco di carte Beta: Profitto Atteso: +29.22$ (utilizzo di entrambe le pozioni)
- un pacco di carte Chaos Legion: Profitto Atteso: +0.826$ (acquisto da TribalDex e utilizzo di entrambe le pozioni)
Tutti gli altri casi di acquisto producono un profitto atteso negativo e quindi una perdita stimata.
Ovviamente il profitto e la perdita che ho calcolato sono valori stimati e non certi.
Questi valori stimati saranno sempre più accurati con l'aumentare del numero di pacchi di carte acquistati partendo da almeno 500+ pacchi come anche precisato nella nota presente sul sito di Peakmonsters.
Dalla Teoria alla Pratica: 10 pacchi di carte Untamed aperti
Adesso passo dalla teoria alla pratica.
Il 31 maggio 2021 ho comprato 100 pacchi di carte Untamed dalla sezione Shop del sito di Splinterlands, ho speso 200000 token DEC e ho ricevuto in totale 110 pacchi (+10 pacchi bonus).
Ho aperto 90 pacchi ma ho ancora 20 pacchi di carte Untamed da aprire.
In base ai valori che avevano i token DEC il 31 maggio 2021 ogni pacco di carte mi è costato 1.65$.
Oggi i token DEC valgono molto di più di allora e se considero il valore dei token DEC attuale ho speso per ogni pacco di carte Untamed 5.92$
Se oggi apro un pacco di carte Untamed avrò un profitto atteso stimato di +28.435$.
Se invece decido di venderlo alla migliore offerta di acquisto (BID) ottengo un profitto certo di +27.80$
La scelta più logica sarebbe stata quella di scegliere la strada certa per quella incerta e avrei dovuto vendere i pacchi di carte Untamed o aspettare che il loro valore salga ma io alla fine ho deciso di aprire 10 dei pacchi di carte.
Quando il profitto stimato è positivo ed è superiore al profitto di vendita preferisco sempre aprire i pacchi di carte perchè:
- mi piace giocare a Splinterlands e avere carte in più nella mia collezione mi è molto utile per vincere le battaglie di gioco
- aprire i pacchi di carte è divertente e quando li apro lo faccio con mia figlia che ha 8 anni e ci facciamo tante risate insieme :)
Decisione presa vediamo se la mia scelta è stata una scelta profittevole o meno.
Ovviamente con soli 10 pacchi da aprire è molto difficile che il profitto stimato sia uguale al profitto reale e con molta probabilità il profitto reale sarà molto distante dal profitto stimato...
Invece di aprire un pacco alla volta io e mia figlia Chiara abbiamo scelto di aprire 10 pacchi insieme.
Le prime carte scoperte sono state abbastanza deludenti...
Ma poi... Yuppiiiiiiiiiiiii
Ho trovato subito una leggendaria ma non una leggendaria qualunque: Scarred Llama Mage
Adesso ho due Scarred LLama Mage nella mia collezione di carte :)
Il valore di mercato di Scarred Llama Mage è di 318.09$
Ma le sorprese non sono finite...
Ci sono altre due leggendarie e anche una carta epica in versione gold:
- High Priest Darius: valore 30.80$
- Dragon Jumper: valore 97.73$
- The Gorlodon (Gold version): valore 134$
Nelle ultime 4 carte da scoprire nessun'altra leggendaria ma una utile War Chaang che ha un valore di 9.98$.
Faccio un pò di calcoli.
Con 10 pacchi di carte Untamed avevo un profitto atteso di 284.35$
Ho trovato carte per un valore totale di mercato di 662.75$
Il profitto reale è decisamente più alto di quello atteso e quindi sono stato davvero fortunato :)
Conclusione
Con il post di oggi ho voluto mostrare come scegliere se acquistare, aprire o vendere un pacco di carte di Splinterlands in base al calcolo del Profitto Atteso/Stimato.
Il profitto stimato è l'elemento che considero maggiormente quando devo acquistare un pacco di carte di Splinterands.
