Forse uno degli show sui quali avremo puntato maggiormente ma forse anche uno di quelli che ci ha deluso di più.
Sto parlando di The Wheel of Time.
Serie fantasy di Amazon Prime Video di cui vi parlo oggi in anteprima rispetto a quanto vedrete nella mente di un serialfiller nei prossimi giorni.

E' innegabile che La Ruota del Tempo fosse uno dei titoli più attesi del 2021.
Che uno dei titoli più attesi abbiamo vissuto, invece, un silenzio cosi assordante è forse la vera cartina al tornasole di quanto sia stato fallimentare il suo percorso.
Fallimentare non sempre combacia con brutto e questo è uno di quei casi.
Una bella azienda può fallire.
Un ottimo prodotto può non avere grosse vendite.
Una buona serie può essere dimenticata facilmente.
E' stato questo il caso di The Wheel of Time?

La ruota del tempo è tratta dalla serie di romanzi, di genere fantasy, scritti da Robert Jordan e Brandon Sanderson tra il 1990 ed il 2013.
Una collana longeva che ha attraversato quasi un quarto di secolo e che Amazon aveva deciso di studiare, metabolizzare e compattare all'interno di una serie tv ad alto budget con protagonista la star hollywoodian Rosamunde Pike (Gone Girl).
Il fatto che un'opera cosi lunga e complessa potesse diventare una serie tv aveva visto, sin da subito, il favore di molti, lettori compresi.
Un film non sarebbe bastato.
L'episodicità e l'articolazione del racconto lungo più stagioni, avrebbe potuto e dovuto garantire quell'ampio respiro di cui la serie necessitava.
La prima stagione ha scricchiolato abbastanza ma forse il vero errore non è stato nella scrittura e nella scelta quanto nel casting e nella mancata razionalizzazione del budget in fase di messa a terra del progetto.
In parole altre, gli attori principali hanno convinto pochissimo (ad esclusione dell'eccellente Rosamund Pike) e molte ambientazioni non hanno valorizzato quello che invece i libri e le attese richiedevano.
In parole altre ancora: ci aspettavamo di assistere a scenari superlativi, location maestose, effetti visivi cinematografici ed invece ci siamo trovati di fronte a qualcosa che sembrava essere stato girato 20 anni fa in termini di resa scenografica.
Nel giudicare lo show, ammetto, queste cose pesano.
Non essere supportati da un cast convincente e non avere a disposizione un impianto visivo di primo ordine hanno depotenziato una serie che, in realtà, non ha poi mostrato segni di crepe cosi evidenti dal punto di vista dell'intrattenimento e della trama.
Non una trama priva di errori, non un intrattenimento cosi originale ma sicuramente accettabile ed in certi casi ottimo.

There's no denying that The Wheel of Time was one of the most anticipated titles of 2021.
That one of the most anticipated titles instead experienced such deafening silence is perhaps the true litmus test of how unsuccessful its run has been.
Failure does not always mean ugly and this is one of those cases.
A good company can fail.
A great product may not have great sales.
A good series can be easily forgotten.
Has this been the case with The Wheel of Time?

The Wheel of Time is based on the series of novels, in the fantasy genre, written by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson between 1990 and 2013.
A long-lived series that has spanned almost a quarter of a century and that Amazon had decided to study, metabolize and compact within a high-budget TV series starring Hollywood star Rosamunde Pike (Gone Girl).
The fact that a work so long and complex could become a TV series had seen, from the beginning, the favor of many, including readers.
A film would not have been enough.
The episodic nature and the articulation of the story along several seasons could and should have guaranteed the wide-ranging scope that the series needed.
The first season creaked enough but perhaps the real mistake was not in the writing and the choice as much as in the casting and the failure to rationalize the budget when grounding the project.
In other words, the main actors were very unconvincing (with the exception of the excellent Rosamund Pike) and many of the settings did not enhance what the books and the expectations called for.
In other words, we expected to see superlative scenery, majestic locations, cinematic visual effects and instead we found ourselves in front of something that seemed to have been shot 20 years ago in terms of scenic rendering.
In judging the show, I admit, these things weigh heavy.
Not being supported by a convincing cast and not having a visual system of the first order have weakened a series that, in reality, has not shown signs of cracks so obvious from the point of view of entertainment and plot.
Not a plot without errors, not so original entertainment but certainly acceptable and in some cases excellent.
