When we talk about an automation system, it can immediately come to mind to ask ourselves what the word system means in this case.

In the field of automation, systems can be divided into two categories: simple systems and complex systems.
A simple system is made up of a single element or the aggregation of a very limited number of elements, which can be considered as a single entity.
A complex system is made up of many strongly interconnected elements.
Complexity is determined by the purposes that a controlled system must have and by the interactions of the elements that compose it. When we consider a complex system, we consider it based on these specifications, we do not consider a complex system based on the physical dimensions of the elements.
Automation systems in industrial automation
Nowadays, in industrial automation there are almost no simple systems anymore. In recent years, complex systems have almost completely covered the needs of industrial automation. In fact, in the field of industrial automation, the systems to be controlled are almost always made up of a plurality of elements that interact closely with each other. We can think of an automation system for sorting pharmaceutical products, or we can think of the complexity of an automation system for selecting fruit inside a fruit and vegetable warehouse.
Automation systems in the industrial sector sometimes reach such complexities that they could even be counterproductive to the production factor, if they start to have many "system stops" during the control phase.
To give some examples, we can say that an alternating current electric motor, a PLC, an RLC circuit are not complex systems, while a water distribution network is.
Complex systems are characterized by an interaction of a multiplicity of individual elements and subsystems of the overall complex system.
The complexity of the mathematical model that describes the behavior of the system does not characterize a complex system.

We can take the following systems as examples of complex automation systems:

-An anthropomorphic robot
-Intelligent urban traffic management system
-High-speed rail network
-Smart building
The actuator
In an automation system there is the control system. In a control system we will find the actuator or actuators. The actuator is the component that provides the energy needed to change the state of the system.
For example, in a circuit with a voltage generator, resistance and inductance, the actuator is the voltage generator.
The fundamental objective of an actuator in a controlled system is to transform the information contained in the control signal into a high-energy forcing of the system.

A good automation system is well designed if these three key aspects have been well thought out:
-Data acquisition level: sensors and measurement devices that collect information about the process.
-Processing and control level: the controller (PLC) that interprets the data and makes decisions

Elementi di un sistema
Quando parliamo di un sistema di automazione, può venirci subito in mente di chiederci che cosa significa la parola sistema in questo caso.
Un sistema è per definizione un insieme di elementi materiali o di elementi astratti che operano tra di loro tramite interazioni. Tutto quello che abbiamo appena descritto è in grado di formare un’entità organica che ha delle caratteristiche funzionali ben definite ed è in grado di svolgere un’attività.
Tutto questo servirà per ottenere una finalità desiderata.
Tornando invece agli elementi di un sistema, possiamo dire che gli elementi di un sistema sono realizzati dall’uomo, ma possono essere già presenti anche in natura. Prendiamo per esempio un sistema di automazione che produce energia elettrica da un impianto fotovoltaico. In questo sistema avremo degli elementi realizzati dall’uomo e la luce del sole che è presente già in natura. Solitamente gli elementi realizzati dall’uomo sono quelli che devono essere attivati affinché il sistema possa raggiungere la finalità per cui è stato progettato.
Molto semplicemente per determinare gli elementi che devono costituire un sistema, bisogna effettuare una scelta sulla base delle finalità del sistema.

Nel campo delle automazione, i sistemi possono essere divisi in due categorie: sistemi semplici e sistemi complessi.
Un sistema semplice è costituito da un unico elemento o dall’aggregazione di un numero molto limitato di elementi, i quali si possono considerare come un’unica entità.
Un sistema complesso è costituito da molti elementi fortemente interconnessi.
La complessità è determinata dalle finalità che dovrà avere un sistema controllato e dalle interazioni degli elementi che lo compongono. Quando consideriamo un sistema complesso, lo consideriamo in base a queste specifiche, non consideriamo un sistema complesso dalle dimensioni fisiche degli elementi.
Sistemi di automazione nell’automazione industriale
Oggi come oggi, nell’automazione industriale non esistono quasi più sistemi semplici. Negli ultimi anni i sistemi complessi hanno quasi totalmente coperto le esigenze dell’automazione industriale. Infatti, nell’ambito dell’automazione industriale, i sistemi da controllare sono costituiti quasi sempre da una pluralità di elementi tra loro strettamente interagenti. Possiamo pensare ad un impianto di automazione per lo smistamento di prodotti farmaceutici, oppure possiamo pensare alla complessità di un sistema di automazione per la selezione della frutta all’interno di un magazzino ortofrutticolo.
Gli impianti di automazione nel settore industriale a volte raggiungono delle complessità tali, che potrebbero anche essere controproducenti al fattore produttivo, se iniziano ad avere molti “stop impianto” durante la fase di controllo.
Per fare degli esempi possiamo dire che non sono dei sistemi complessi un motore elettrico in corrente alternata, un PLC, un circuito RLC, mentre lo è una rete di distribuzione idrica.
I sistemi complessi sono caratterizzati da una interazione di una molteplicità di elementi singoli e sotto-sistemi del sistema complesso complessivo.
La complicatezza del modello matematico che descrive il comportamento del sistema non caratterizza un sistema complesso.
Esempi di sistemi di automazioni complessi
Possiamo prendere come esempi di sistemi di automazione complessi i seguenti sistemi:
-Centrale eolica
-Una rete idrica
-Un robot antropomorfo
-Sistema di gestione del traffico urbano intelligente
-Rete ferroviaria ad alta velocità
-Smart building
L'attuatore
In un sistema di automazione esiste il sistema di controllo. In un sistema di controllo troveremo l'attuatore o gli attuatori. L'attuatore è il componente che fornisce l'energia necessaria per modificare lo stato del sistema.
Ad esempio in un circuito con generatore di tensione, resistenza e induttanza, l'attuatore è il generatore di tensione.
L'obiettivo fondamentale di un attuatore nell'ambito di un sistema controllato è trasformare l'informazione contenuta nel segnale di controllo in un forzamento ad alto contenuto energetico del sistema.

Un buon sistema di automazione è progettato bene se questi tre aspetti chiave sono stati ben pensati:
-Livello di acquisizione dati: sensori e dispositivi di misura che raccolgono informazioni sul processo.
-Livello di elaborazione e controllo: il controllore (PLC) che interpreta i dati e prende decisioni
-Livello di attuazione: attuatori che eseguono le azioni necessarie per modificare lo stato del sistema in base ai comandi ricevuti.
Conclusioni
Prima di costruire un impianto di automazione è assolutamente necessario comprendere quale sarà la struttura di tale sistema di automazione. Questo è fondamentale per garantire l'efficienza, la precisione e l'affidabilità dei processi industriali e tecnologici
