I remember waking up every morning to the smell of freshly brewed coffee, a distinctive aroma!
But for us, this is more than just a drink; it’s a whole tradition.
Something that defines a country and its people.
The Coladita
It’s about making the most of every bean, every gram of coffee.
But why a tradition?
Coffee in 🇨🇺 is quite different from the rest of the world.
Espresso machines, coffee capsules, and other modern modalities that you know are not part of daily life in Cuba.
A country always marked by limitations and needs, our ancestors always found ways to keep enjoying coffee.
In every home, the ritual may vary slightly, but it remains the same: when any visitor, neighbor, or friend arrives, the coffee pot is put on, and it’s time to enjoy!
The coffee moment is akin to tea time for the English: sacred.
Problems are discussed, daily life is talked about, and one enjoys the company. In other words, it’s life itself.
A Cuban cannot start their day without a coladita, and when the afternoon comes, it’s time for another one!
That’s why you see people selling coffee near bus stops and workplaces.
They serve it in a small cup to mimic the coladitas from home. Prices start from 20 Cuban pesos to 150 Cuban pesos (less than 0.5 USD)
Is it worth it? For me, yes.
This is a culture that Cubans carry with them wherever they go. In cities like Miami or New York, you can increasingly find cafes offering this.
The colada has become so famous that when the Cuban baseball team participated in the last World Baseball Classic, they were dubbed (by ESPN) as #ColadaPower.
And although national coffee production is scarce these days, Cubans still find ways to enjoy their rich coladita.
A simple little cup of coffee has turned into a tradition and ritual. It has marked an entire country and is now a global phenomenon ☕
