Confession: I’m Obsessed with Colonial Military Fortifications
I’ll admit it—I’m a total fanatic when it comes to colonial-era military fortifications. Growing up in Havana, one of the most heavily fortified Spanish strongholds in the Americas (one day I’ll visit Maracaibo and compare), I was surrounded by colonial castles and antique cannons. While tourists snapped photos, I was the kid climbing on those same cannons, pretending they were spaceships. To them, it was the setting of Pirates of the Caribbean (the video game, not the Disney movie).
Yet, there’s one artillery piece in Havana I’d never seen with my own eyes—the massive Ordóñez cannon at the Santa Clara Battery.
Let me set the scene. In the 19th century, Havana braced for a US Navy blockade while awaiting the Spanish fleet under Admiral Cervera during the Spanish-Cuban-American War (yes, Cubans were involved, despite what Spanish YouTubers imply when they talk about the "Spanish-American War" as if we were just sipping beer on the sidelines). The main theater of war shifted to Santiago de Cuba, but there were attempts to lure American battleships within range of Havana’s coastal defenses. The Santa Clara Battery came painfully close to hitting one of those ships—so close, in fact, that the invading US Army later preserved one of its 305mm Ordóñez cannons, which had scored direct hits. Over time, the hill where the battery stood became the site of the Hotel Nacional. And that’s probably why I’d never seen the legendary Ordóñez cannon I’d read so much about.
I’ve never liked hotels in my country. For too many years, Cubans were barred from entering them, and even when the policy changed, the treatment was grudging and unequal. So I’d never visited—until yesterday, when a friend invited me to its gardens. I seized the chance to sneak a quick photo.
I don’t like Havana’s hotels, but I do love its fortifications and cannons. In life, you’ve got to focus on the positives.
Lo confieso, soy un fanático de las fortificaciones militares coloniales. Claro, al crecer en La Habana, una de las plazas españolas en América mejor fortificadas (un día viajaré a Maracaibo y haremos comparaciones) Los castillos coloniales y los viejos cañones formaron parte de la realidad en la que crecí. Yo trepaba en cañones coloniales que los turistas fotografiaban. Yo pensaba que montaba naves espaciales y ellos sentían que estaban en el escenario de los Piratas del Caribe (el videojuego, no la película de Disney)
Sin embargo, existe un emplazamiento en La Habana, concretamente un cañón, que nunca había visto con mis propios ojos. Se trata del gigantesco cañón Ordóñez de la batería de Santa Clara.
Los pongo en situación. En el siglo XIX La Habana se preparaba para enfrentar un bloqueo de la US Navy mientras esperaban por la Flota Española comandada por el almirante Cervera durante la guerra hispanocubano-norteamericana (Sí, los cubanos tuvimos que ver aunque todos los youtubers españoles que hablan de la guerra hispano-norteamericana, como si nosotros hubiéramos estado sentados tomando cerveza). El teatro de operaciones militares, como ya sabemos se trasladó a Santiago de Cuba, sin embargo, hubo intentos de atraer acorazados norteamericanos hasta el rango del sistema defensivo de la ciudad. Una de las baterías que casi consigue acertar en uno de estos buques fue la de Santa Clara. Al punto que uno de los grandes cañones Ordóñez de 305 mm que ejecutó disparos directos contra los buques norteamericanos fue conservado por el propio ejercito interventor. La colina donde se encontraba la batería de Santa Clara fue convertida con los años en el Hotel Nacional. Y posiblemente esta sea la razón por la que nunca había visto el Ordóñez del que tanto sabía.
No me gustan los hoteles de mi país. Se me negó durante demasiados años el acceso a él y cuando aceptaron a los nacionales el trato se notaba diferenciado y a regañadientes. Así que nunca fui, hasta ayer, que una amiga me citó en sus jardines y aproveché para sacar una futiva foto.
No me gustan los hoteles de La Habana pero sí sus fortificaciones y cañones. Y en esta vida hay que concentrarse en lo positivo.
