True freedom is impossible without a mind made free by discipline.
-- Mortimer J. Adler
About the Quote
The mind is difficult to control, and this has nothing to do with "mind control" experiments. The mind is subject to programming, and it can be either good or bad. Bad programming leads to bad decisions, which lead to bad habits or even a faulty value system. Look no further than the addictions many of us have, anything ranging from sugar and chocolate to drugs to attention or power. Our health is in part a consequence of the addictions we have, and that starts with the mind.
Good programming leads to good decisions, and those lead to good habits and a solidly secure value system. Even if we have some addiction or other, good programming can dampen or minimize the negative effects of those addictions. Good programming can lead to good health, and health is wealth beyond measure.
Good programming teaches the mind discipline, and that discipline can be used to choose a course of action which works in our favor. An undisciplined mind is a mind that's out of control in more ways than one. This can lead to situations which set us back in our development or in our lives.
