People striving for approval from others become phony.
-- Ichiro Suzuki
About the Quote
We all want to be loved, or at least acknowledged. If we let it happen organically, just from being ourselves and living ourlives, that's OK.
The problem comes when we change how we are in order to obtain that acknowledgment or recognition. The ultimate expression of this course of action is to be "all things to all people." Usually it doesn't end well for people who do that.
Even in professions where we have an extremely high chance of trying to be all things to all people, merit is given to the person who makes a genuine effort to not be that way.
Some Information about Ichiro Suzuki
Ichiro Suzuki was born in Kasugai, Aichi Prefecture, Japan on 1973-October-22.
Known worldwide as simply "Ichiro," he is best known-- on two continents-- as one of the best professional baseball players of his generation. At the highest levels of the sport-- both Major League Baseball and Nippon Professional Baseball before that-- he holds the combined record for most hits. Despite being known as a "slap hitter" in MLB, he was one of the most exciting players to watch both as a hitter, a base runner, and as a fielder.
From a very early age, Ichiro Suzuki was playing baseball. After he finished high school he was drafted by the Orix BlueWave of the Pacific League of NPB. At first he saw limited playing time because his manager didn't like his unorthodox batting style: he would take his stance, raise his front leg, then bring the leg forward as he swung the baseball bat. In 1994, his new manager gave him the green light to use the style which worked for him.
Under his first new manager, Ichiro finished the season with a 0.385 batting average, at one point having the average exceed 0.400. At the time, the 0.385 average was the second-best in the history or Japanese professional baseball. In the same season, he also set the record for most hits with 210. After the 2000 NPB season, he had won seven consecutive batting championships to go with his NPB career batting average of 0.353.
