About the Quote
In a team sport, not everyone can be classified as a scorer. For the player scoring points or goals, there needs to be one or more players who provide the assist to the points or goals. Although unassisted scoring is possible, it is a relatively rare event. Whether a player is classified as a scorer or a playmaker (by assisting the scorer), both need dedicated defenders who keep opposing players from scoring. For sports where goals are scored, the goaltender is a special class of defender; the goaltender is also the last line of defense.
In the case of basketball, there are situations where all of a team's players on the court act as offensive players and execute plays properly to that some player (even a defender) can be credited as the scorer. All players touch the basketball at least one time before the shot it taken. Even broken plays can end up leading to points scored if the players on the court take advantage of opportunities before them.
In professional basketball, the Los Angeles Lakers of the 1980s were stacked with not only Hall of Fame players but also HOF-caliber players. Although all players did all things on the court, two players stand out: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was not only the leading scorer on the Lakers, but he was also for many years the top scoring player in NBA history. Magic Johnson did his share of scoring, but he is remembered as an assist-first
player: he always looked for opportunities to feed the ball to a teammate who was in position to score points. These players-- and their teammates-- knew how to play the game properly, and they did so in an entertaining way. In the process, each player was involved in getting points scored, and there was no wasted effort. Those players acted as one scoring machine, and they were able to win championships along the way.

For five years he coached armed forces teams as well as the team at the United States Military Academy Preparatory School. Krzyzewski reunited with Bob Knight as an assistant coach for one season at Indiana University (the college most associated with Coach Knight).
