Architecture of Ashburton main town, looking up the hill from outside the Old Exeter Inn.

What it says, after some mishaps and a change of the throne things didn't end well for poor Walter. A Devon born lad, no less. Check out his Wikipedia page for the full story, he led a heck of a life.

Exterior of the Inn. Exeter is actually the city about 25miles away from Ashburton. Why it's called this is likely related to probably would have been a rest stop on the old days horse-and-cart Exeter highway.

Another look at the exterior. Very well built foor the day, they really over-engineered back then. As we shall see inside in a moment ...

Highlight of the entire building is this bar on the ground floor right in the centre. Check out that granite, huge great slabs of the stuff. Been there since the place was built, and for the purpose of holding ale kegs, still to this day.

Modern taps serve fresh craft beers from the region and other parts of UK

There is a varied selection of craft ales and ciders available for drinking or taking home
Historic Devon Inn with some very famous ex-locals
Ashburton, Southwest Devon, England
Ashburton, (Southwest Devon England) is a small town on the edges of Dartmoor national park, which features a lot of graded/protected architecture. This Inn is not allowed to be modified in any way which would be destructive to it's preserved state as a public house for the best part of a millennia. It should still be the case when the sun goes super-nova, and even if the great reset unleashes anarchy, we're willing to bet it would just be an even more popular public house.
Enjoying a Pint with Francis and Walter
Sir Walter Raleigh and Francis Drake. Two of the most intriguing and famous Devonians (people of Devonshire, England) to have walked the earth. At this Inn you can enjoy a pint sitting at the same tables and amongst the same granite beams as they would both have done hundreds of years ago. You can almost feel a presence, it is unusual to think this public house, one time, you could have walked in and had a chat with Sir Francis or Sir Walter about the world.
Drake The ... Hero? Pirate?
To the English, Francis Drake was a hero. The Spanish however, knew him as El Draque, The Pirate. Drake was a Devon lad, born in Tavistok. As such, we here a lot about him and see him pop up around various famous locations in Devon. Devon's ports and harbors on the south coast are also the traditional defense points to invading fleets for hundreds of years, and today Plymouth is still one of the largest naval bases in the UK. The first Englishman to sail non-stop around the world, the man who ran the English naval fleet to defend our isle against a hostile attempt by the Spanish Armada, used to enjoy a pint here. Again, rather than repeat (poorly) all the achievements of this wondrous fella, you should visit his Wikipedia page. Nowadays, UK and Spain seem to get along just fine, it's all in a very distant past!
Visit Devon, Hunt Pirates
One of the most fun things you can do when exploring this county is to follow in the footsteps of historical figures like Drake and Walt. They're sure to take you to some incredibly interesting places and amazing pubs, like the Old Exeter Inn which serves an excellent range of ales and British gastro-food offerings.
