So I finally stumbled into the Hive Torch after several hundred transactions throughout the community here on Hive. I remember when this thing was just starting off, but completely forgot about its existence, so to see it suddenly appear in my wallet was a bit of a surprise led by some mild confusion.
I've been sitting on this sum of Hive for a few days now and thinking about the little project and how I should go about transacting it on to the next person. It has actually been a little stressful. Seeing that the amount of Hive equates to around $500 has led to several questions: who do I give it to? Is this cruel?
Here on Hive we've got a pretty global community. We can find users from pretty much anywhere that holds some degree of Internet access. In some of such locations, $500 is a lot of money to have suddenly handed in front of you. I can imagine that such a sum could really impact a few lives on here.
Thinking about it a little more, we're essentially playing 'pass the parcel' with this sum of Hive as the dollar value and Hive value increases. But could we even be mad in the event that the music stops and the sum is collected by a user? It's a pretty interesting concept to think of that could test the community. After all, the sum isn't stolen, it was knowingly donated with each user being fully aware that it won't be returned to them. In my opinion, I hope it does land in the hands of someone that needs it. I hope they're free to collect it and use it wisely to improve their life and financial situation, without any judgement here on Hive.
That said, I've been really uncertain as to who I should choose from here on. The few people I do talk to and trust here on Hive have already had the Hive Torch and passed it on, and I wouldn't want to follow a tradition of handing it over to people that are rather known and large here on the platform, since that doesn't necessarily display trust, just collateral. Though, I've also hated the idea of randomly sending the sum to a smaller fish here on Hive, knowing that they've just received $500 that could place them in a much healthier and better place due to currency conversions or simply state of financial situation in their country.
The last thing I felt I could do was hand the Hive over to someone, only for them to see the money and discover that it's expected to be transacted on to another; money that could be used and forced out of their hands due to fears of being targeted. That isn't to say that would certainly happen, but who knows?
Anyway, in order to find someone, I decided I'll search within my community, the Movies & TV Shows Community. I spammed the everyone tag in our Discord and waited for replies. Ultimately leading to @gaboamc2393. Your turn! ;^)
