En su forma actual, es original de Cornualles, y se publicó por vez primera en Carols Ancient and Modern (1823) y Gilbert and Sandys Carols (1833), ambos editados por William Sandys y arreglados, editados y con letra adicional de Davies Gilbert para Hymns and Carols of God. The first Christmas (in English, The First Noel, a The First Noël or The First Nowell) is a traditional English Christmas carol, most likely from the seventeenth century, although it is also possible that it is earlier, from the thirteenth century. In its present form, it is a Cornish original, first published in Carols Ancient and Modern (1823) and Gilbert and Sandys Carols (1833), both edited by William Sandys and arranged, edited and with additional lyrics by Davies Gilbert for Hymns and Carols of God. The melody is unusual among English folk melodies in that it consists of a musical phrase repeated twice, followed by a chorus that is a variation of that phrase.
