Ivan Dimitrov from the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology FIT discussed various blockchain projects and research at the institute. With a background in computer science and a master's thesis on blockchain, Ivan is now pursuing a PhD under Professor Prince, who leads Fraunhofer's blockchain research group.
Fraunhofer Blockchain Research:
Established in 2015, Fraunhofer's blockchain department launched the "Blockchain Reallabor" project in 2021, funded by the government. The team comprises around 10 members, including PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, working on diverse blockchain and metaverse projects.
Activities and Events:
Fraunhofer hosts multiple blockchain events annually, inviting speakers and participants from the blockchain community. They also run the "Blockchain NRW" website, publishing information about their projects and events.
Key Projects and Demonstrations:
- Medical Leaflet Project: A digital solution for securely storing and verifying medical leaflets using blockchain.
- Smart Torque Wrench: In collaboration with a Danish university, this project uses a smart wrench to record repair data on the blockchain for wind turbine maintenance.
- Product Pass for Trailer: Tracks the lifecycle and ownership of bike trailers, recording transactions and repairs on the blockchain.
- CO2 Emissions Tracker: A prototype for tracking the carbon footprint of blockchain transactions.
- Transportation Certificates: Digitizes and secures cleaning certificates for trucks transporting hazardous materials.
- Smart Hand Sanitizer: Combines hand sanitization with advertising, recording ad views on the blockchain.
- Smart City Traffic Light: An automated system that detects faults, requests repairs, and processes payments using blockchain.
Collaboration and Support:
Fraunhofer supports blockchain projects through workshops, case analyses, and assistance with securing government funding. They are open to collaborations and helping businesses integrate blockchain solutions.
Future Plans:
Ivan encouraged participation in upcoming blockchain events and emphasized Fraunhofer's dedication to advancing blockchain technology through research and practical applications.
The presentation highlighted Fraunhofer's extensive work in blockchain, showcasing innovative projects and emphasizing collaboration and community involvement in the blockchain space.
