¿Por qué te cuesta tanto perder peso?
Cuando una persona tiene un problema de salud relacionado con la obesidad, el perder peso no es solo un capricho estético, es una necesidad, pocas cosas son más peligrosas que el tener 30, 40 o hasta 50 kg de peso extra sobre el cuerpo todo el tiempo, no es lo mismo tener algo de sobre peso a ser una persona obesa o mordidamente obesa, los problemas de salud que genera la obesidad son numerosos: desarrollo de enfermedades cardiacas y renales, desgaste temprano de las articulaciones y huesos del cuerpo, problemas respiratorios, perdida de energía, ánimo y apetito sexual por tan solo mencionar sus síntomas más evidentes.
Parece curioso que a pesar de ser un estilo de vida tan increíblemente peligroso, está muy normalizado el ver cada vez más gente obesa, en especial en jóvenes que desarrollan esta condición a una edad muy temprana. ¿Cuáles son las causas? ¿Qué podemos hacer para prevenirlo? ¿Cómo puedo cambiar mi cuerpo si soy obeso? Para poder contestar estas preguntas necesitamos dividir los puntos a tener en cuenta que para este caso serán tres; aspectos personales, aspectos sociales y método de entrenamiento.
Aspectos personales: tenemos que entender que nuestro cuerpo es en ocasiones el claro reflejo de nuestra mente, el físico de una persona, como se mueve y como respira son datos relevantes que nos pueden sugerir pistas sobre el estilo de vida que se lleva, cuando vemos a un individuo que sufre obesidad no necesitamos mucho esfuerzo para hacer el ejercicio mental de proyectar como debe ser vivir de esa manera he inmediatamente podemos sospechar del sin fin de desgracias que se pueden sufrir a raíz de ese problema, entonces ¿Por qué la gente se permite engordar hasta ese punto?. El hombre obeso promedio presenta un perfil psicológico bastante común, la mayoría son individuos inseguros de sí mismos, en el subconsciente humano existe el pensamiento de “si soy más grande , soy más fuerte” ,evidentemente estas personas solo están ganando grasa y no musculo, pero sus inseguridades hacen que se active de forma casi programada el instinto de aumentar su masa lo máximo posible para de esta manera compensar sus debilidades y poder defenderse de posibles ataques a su persona, todo esto a un nivel subconsciente por supuesto, por esto resulta tan frustrante para la persona obesa el no poder controlarse, porque no entiende que su problema reside en el inconsciente. Los problemas de ansiedad vienen de la mano con el estilo de vida moderno y ajetreado de las grandes y congestionadas ciudades, la ansiedad por comer también puede ser el desahogo por alguna frustración que sea recurrente y no podamos superar a simple vista, sin contar el enorme número de alimentos que tienen químicos y azucares altamente adictivos. La mayoría de la gente no comprende estos trastornos y se juzga con mucha severidad ya que se piensa que “solo hay que dejar de comer tanto” pero el problema es más complejo que eso, debemos ser más empáticos ya que aquellos individuos obesos que deseen cambiar, deben hacer un enorme esfuerzo físico y mental, para mí no es muy diferente a pasar por un rehabilitación por drogas o alcoholismo (recordemos que por ejemplo la azúcar es una de las sustancias más adictivas del planeta).Lamentablemente como e todo proceso para superar una adición no hay camino fácil, debemos trabajar fuertemente en el autocontrol y si es posible contar con el apoyo de nuestros cercanos es algo que siempre ayudara en el proceso
Aspectos sociales: ya dejamos claro la enorme dificultad personal que conlleva el decidir tener un cambio físico importante, pero ¿qué tanto contribuye la sociedad a este problema? Un individuo puede tener la determinación para cambiar sus hábitos pero no puede cambiar la de sus familiares y amigos, esas comelonas de las reuniones familiares “tu abuela hizo el plato que tanto te gusta” “tu tía trajo las donas rellenas de crema que te encantan” “tu madre se desveló toda la noche para prepararte el pastel de chocolate, no se lo puedes despreciar” es difícil a veces rechazar estos platillos pues sabemos que son una muestra de amor por parte de nuestros seres queridos. Cuando sales de la oficina y los colegas te invitan a tomar unos tragos en el bar local, pero tú sabes que no serán solo unos tragos, también es la hamburguesa con tocino para hacer estomago que venden en el bar y unas tapas para degustar mientras beben y dios sabe que locura se te puede ocurrir si tu juicio se ve nublado por el alcohol “mmm esos nachos con queso se ven bien, me los merezco” te repites a ti mismo mientras tiras a la basura una semana de esfuerzo, sin embargo para algunos es muy difícil rechazar este tipo de invitaciones ya que también se rechaza la buena voluntad de los compañeros y se fracturan posibles alianzas que sabemos son necesarias para el futuro. Pero como si los amigos y la familia no fueran suficiente estamos rodeados de publicidad que nos ataca las 24 horas y no precisamente con ensaladas….la comida más barata y fácil de encontrar siempre es la más dañina. Para estos casos lo mejor es marcar una posición de manera firme y decidida con antelación para que sea del conocimiento de todo tu círculo social que haz decidido comprometerte con tu objetivo, te invito siempre tener a la mano opciones para poder compartir un buen momento sin romper las reglas establecidas
Método de entrenamiento: el error más común (incluso por parte de entrenadores “profesionales”) es el de atacar el problema del peso a base de ejercicio cardiovascular como correr, usar bicicleta elíptica o maquina escaladora, a continuación procedo a enumerar porque esta práctica está sobrevalorada y no presenta resultados tan eficientes como promete:
Si bien el cardio contribuye al proceso de oxidación de la grasa nuestro cuerpo tienda adaptarse rápidamente a este tipo de estrés por lo tanto es muy común observar a gente que después de sus primeros 2 o 3 meses se quedan estancados y les cuesta mucho más pode seguir bajando de peso con el mismo método.
Para poder salir del estancamiento del cardio la gran mayoría aumenta el tiempo de duración del ejercicio mientras que disminuyen de forma extrema los alimentos que consumen para poder seguir viendo resultados, lo que al largo plazo conlleva a un desgaste del cuerpo por falta de nutrientes y exceso de estrés prolongado en los entrenamientos
El cardio no es un método coherente para fortalecer todo el cuerpo, cuando vemos a un maratonista observaremos a un individuo con unas pantorrillas y piernas relativamente fuertes pero con un tronco superior muy débil, normalmente muy delgado debido a lo que ya hablamos en el punto número 2(lo cual no será conveniente para fines estéticos) además del hecho de que el estrés prolongado siempre en las mismas zonas específicas durante todos tus entrenamientos es una bomba de tiempo para futuras lesiones, esto explicaría por qué la mayoría de los maratonistas presentan lesiones en algún momento tanto en pies, talón o rodillas
Yo recomiendo para personas con problemas extremos de peso ejercicios de trabajo musculas con calistenia combinado con peso fuerte que permita como máximo un rango de 8 repeticiones trabajando con cada ejercicio un área específica con el fin de haber trabajado todo el cuerpo durante la semana, el cardio puede ser un complemento del entrenamiento pero nunca su base, al menos no en sus presentaciones más clásicas ya mencionadas, aunque se reconoce que existen actividades que se basan en ejercicios cardiovasculares y de esfuerzo que pueden llegar a ser más efectivas para trabajar el cuerpo de forma completa como lo son las artes marciales, alpinismo, senderismo, natación, boxeo, rapel o escalada por mencionar algunas aunque no suelen ser el estándar del gym promedio.

It seems curious that despite being such an incredibly dangerous lifestyle, it is very normalized to see more and more obese people, especially in young people who develop this condition at a very young age. What are the causes? What can we do to prevent it? How can I change my body if I am obese? To be able to answer these questions we need to divide the points to take into account that for this case will be three; personal aspects, social aspects and training method.
Personal aspects: we have to understand that our body is sometimes the clear reflection of our mind, the physique of a person, how he moves and how he breathes are relevant data that can suggest clues about the lifestyle he leads, when we see an individual suffering from obesity we do not need much effort to make the mental exercise of projecting how it should be to live that way and immediately we can suspect the endless misfortunes that can be suffered as a result of this problem, so why do people allow themselves to get fat to that point? The average obese man presents a fairly common psychological profile, most of them are insecure individuals, in the human subconscious there is the thought "if I am bigger, I am stronger", evidently these people are only gaining weight. Obviously these people are only gaining fat and not muscle, but their insecurities make them activate in an almost programmed way the instinct to increase their mass as much as possible to compensate their weaknesses and be able to defend themselves from possible attacks to their person, all this at a subconscious level of course, this is why it is so frustrating for the obese person to not be able to control themselves, because they do not understand that their problem lies in the unconscious. Anxiety problems come hand in hand with the modern and hectic lifestyle of large and congested cities, anxiety about eating can also be the outlet for some frustration that is recurrent and we can not overcome at a glance, not to mention the huge number of foods that have highly addictive chemicals and sugars. Most people do not understand these disorders and are judged very harshly because they think that "you just have to stop eating so much" but the problem is more complex than that, we must be more empathetic because those obese individuals who wish to change, must make a huge physical and mental effort, for me it is not very different from going through rehabilitation for drugs or alcoholism (remember that for example sugar is one of the most addictive substances on the planet). Unfortunately as in any process to overcome an addiction there is no easy way, we must work hard on self-control and if possible have the support of our close ones is something that will always help in the process.
Social aspects: we have already made clear the enormous personal difficulty involved in deciding to have a major physical change, but how much does society contribute to this problem? An individual may have the determination to change his habits but he cannot change those of his family and friends, those big eaters at family gatherings "your grandmother made the dish you like so much" "your aunt brought the cream-filled donuts you love" "your mother stayed up all night to prepare the chocolate cake, you cannot despise it" it is sometimes difficult to refuse these dishes because we know that they are a token of love from our loved ones. When you leave the office and your colleagues invite you to have a few drinks at the local bar, but you know it's not just drinks, it's also the bacon bacon burger they sell at the bar and some tapas to enjoy while you drink and god knows what crazy thing you can come up with if your judgment is clouded by alcohol "mmm those nachos with cheese look good, I deserve them! I deserve them" you repeat to yourself while you throw away a week of effort, however for some it is very difficult to refuse this kind of invitations since you also reject the good will of your colleagues and fracture possible alliances that we know are necessary for the future. But as if friends and family were not enough, we are surrounded by advertising that attacks us 24 hours a day and not exactly with salads.... the cheapest and easiest food to find is always the most harmful. For these cases the best thing to do is to make a firm and decided position in advance so that all your social circle is aware that you have decided to commit to your goal, I invite you to always have on hand options to share a good time without breaking the established rules.
Training method: the most common mistake (even by "professional" trainers) is to attack the problem of weight based on cardiovascular exercise such as running, using elliptical trainer or climbing machine, then I proceed to list why this practice is overrated and does not present results as efficient as promised:
While cardio contributes to the process of fat oxidation our body tends to adapt quickly to this type of stress so it is very common to observe people who after their first 2 or 3 months remain stagnant and find it much more difficult to continue losing weight with the same method.
In order to get out of the stagnation of cardio the vast majority increase the duration of exercise while extremely decrease the food they eat to continue to see results, which in the long term leads to a wear of the body due to lack of nutrients and excessive stress prolonged workouts
Cardio is not a coherent method to strengthen the whole body, when we see a marathon runner we will observe an individual with relatively strong calves and legs but with a very weak upper trunk, usually very thin due to what we already talked about in point number 2 (which will not be convenient for aesthetic purposes) besides the fact that prolonged stress always in the same specific areas during all your workouts is a time bomb for future injuries, this would explain why most marathoners have injuries at some point either in feet, heel or knees.
I recommend for people with extreme weight problems, exercises of muscular work with calisthenics combined with heavy weights that allow at most a range of 8 repetitions working with each exercise a specific area in order to have worked the whole body during the week, cardio can be a complement to the training but never its base, at least not in its more classic presentations already mentioned, although it is recognized that there are activities that are based on cardiovascular exercises and effort that can become more effective to work the body as a whole such as martial arts, mountaineering, hiking, swimming, boxing, rappelling or climbing to name a few but are not usually the standard of the average gym.
