Creativity is an interesting concept!
If you break it down into its component parts, it is clearly the process of creating something. That much is obvious!
Starcat!
Somewhere along the way, a large number of people got this idea that creativity necessarily needed to be artistic in nature. That is, in order to be creative you have to be a painter, or maybe a sculptor, or maybe you're in the performing arts.
"Regular folks" need not apply!
Even though we have a discipline known as creative writing, writing has often been treated as a bit of an afterthought in the context of creativity. And, to the extent that it has been included, it has typically been viewed through the lens of perception that creative writing meant somebody who wrote poetry, wrote songs, wrote flowing and lyrical prose, maybe wrote a play for the theater.
But is that really right? Moreover, is this rather exclusive use of the term "creativity" a fair one to use?
Personally speaking, my primary creative discipline is create writing; specifically, creative nonfiction.
I never was particularly good at fabricating elaborate and intricate stories with interesting characters, but I was definitely quite adept at exploring a subject I was interested in, and then presenting it to an audience... preferably in such a way that they would actually read through to the end!
Usually, this has taken the form of taking a relatively mundane and commonplace subject and examining it from angles people perhaps haven't previously considered. Taking the ordinary (and potentially boring) and making it interesting and relatable is a creative skill, in and of itself!
Poser!
Anyway, I would submit that creative nonfiction definitely has its place in the world of creativity. In fact, here on Hive it seems like it would be very much at home since many people here essentially use a style of creative nonfiction whether they're telling a travel story, or sharing a pictorial recipe, or even doing their Wednesday Walk posts!
I'm just saying, let's not put too many limitations on people!
I say that, because a large part of the joy of creativity is to have a great deal of freedom of expression.
Footnote
Although the token doesn't have a whole lot of value these days, I am still a significant stakeholder in the Creative Coin token, and my intention for this account was always to discover and reward decent creative content in the Hive community.
We do have a tremendous number of very creative contributors here, and they deserve all the support they can get!
Till the next one, thanks for stopping by!
