What's buzzing, friends?
Let's face it - the USA is one of the few countries in the world that hasn't fully adopted the metric system. We still measure distance in miles, weight in pounds, and temperature in Fahrenheit. But why is that? We often hear the phrase "It's just the way things have always been done". But is it really? Let's take a look at a brief history of why the US has been so slow to adopt the metric system.
It all started in the 1700s when the US first began to take shape.
When Thomas Jefferson wanted to make a bold statement in 1793, he requested to use the metric system - the revolutionary system of measurement that was taking Europe by storm. To ensure the accuracy of the system, the founders of the metric system sent a renowned French scientist by the name of Joseph Dombey to personally visit Jefferson and explain the nuances of this revolutionary system. With Joseph was a 3-inch tall, 1-kilogram object that would be what the weight of all things are measured with.
Joseph Dombey's dreams of crossing the Atlantic with the hope of introducing the metric system to America were tragically cut short. A powerful storm blew his ship far south into the Caribbean, where it was captured by ruthless pirates. Joseph was taken to a pirate jail, where he tragically died without seeing his mission come to fruition. (Read the full story HERE.)
Dare we say, look no further for an answer to why America hasn't adopted the metric system: blame them pesky pirates from the 1700's. But, don't go blaming them for everything, especially if you haven't read this week's DBuzz update! Just scroll down the page and you'll find all the info you need.
