El tema de la salud mental es fundamental para cada familia, es bueno que lo tengan presente y se nutran de información. Es muy importante ya que nos ayuda a tener mente positiva y realizar bien los trabajos que nos proponemos, controlando el estrés y la ansiedad.
Hay que tener cuidado con preservar la salud mental para que nuestras vidas sean más productivas y felices. Cuando todo esto marcha bien estamos mejor capacitados para controlar nuestras emociones, y ayudar de major manera a la comunidad o sociedad. Así que en esta ocasión me sumo a la iniciativa creada por @cami.rojas para hablar de este tema desde mi perspectiva.
The subject of mental health is fundamental for every family, it is good that they keep it in mind and nourish themselves with information. It is very important because it helps us to have a positive mind and perform well the work we propose, controlling stress and anxiety.
We must take care to preserve our mental health so that our lives are more productive and happy. When all this goes well we are better able to control our emotions, and help the community or society in a better way. So on this occasion I join the initiative created by @cami.rojas to talk about this topic from my perspective.
¿Alguna vez te han enseñado a ser inteligente emocionalmente o te han hablado de salud mental?
Cuando escuché por primera vez de salud mental ya estaba en clases de medicina, pero mi madre (sin saber, supongo) desde pequeña me daba muchas enseñanzas para cuidar mi salud mental.
¿Cuando fue la primera vez que sentiste ansiedad o desequilibrio en tus emociones?
Para ser sincera, hasta de pequeña sufría de ansiedad. Recuerdo que cuando tenia unos 7 u 8 años me sentía feliz, todo estaba yendo bien, como toda vida de niño yo era ingenua a los problemas de adultos; un día mi madre me contó de la enfermedad de una tía cercana, como toda madre buscó solo decirme que estaba mal para no asustarme y me pidió visitarla, así que en varias ocasiones nos dirigimos a su hogar, vivía cerca de nosotras. Semanas después su salud empeoró y falleció de cáncer de estómago y para mi fue el caos. Por primera vez sentía que me ahogaba, mis manos temblaban, mi respiración se aceleró y la ansiedad llegó.
¿Crees que los medios actuales de comunicación, llevan el mensaje correcto de salud mental?
El internet nos puede ayudar en muchas ocasiones, pero solo si se usa de manera correcta, y puede ser un gran medio de comunicación que nos puede orientar en diversas maneras. Sin embargo, hoy en día hay muchas personas que utilizan los medios de una forma incorrecta, lo cual termina perjudicando aspectos de sus vidas.
Si bien es cierto que actualmente hay mucho mas contenido dañino para salud mental y el acceso es mas facil, también hay campañas que promueven el cuidado de la salud mental. Es un tema que ha estado tomando fuerzas durante los ultimos años.
¿Cual ha sido tu mayor aporte a tu salud mental?
Diría que la lectura, leer me llena de alegría y me ayuda a sentirme mejor en momentos de presión y ansiedad, me distrae del mundo y muchas veces me enfoca en lo que quiero. Meditar también me ayuda mucho, ejercicios de relajación y concentración en mis metas son cosas que me ayudan a pensar de manera objetiva. Formar una buena rutina que me distraiga es una buena manera para tener salud mental y evitar pensamientos negativos y tóxicos.
¿Si tuviéramos a una persona que está luchando contra la depresión, ansiedad o cualquier otra cosa que afecte su salud mental y en otro extremo estuviera una persona que dice que lo hace por llamar la atención, qué les dirías a cada una?
Para la persona que de verdad tiene depresión yo le hablaría de las cosas buenas que han pasado, la apoyaría y la orientaría con una perspectiva diferente de sus problemas para que pueda salir de su estado. La ayudaría a seguir una rutina en la que pueda ayudarla para salir de allí.
A la persona que lo hace solo por llamar la atención, le aconsejaría que con eso no gana nada. Hay personas que de verdad se sienten así y no es nada un juego. La ayudaría dando opiniones sobre las soluciones de sus problemas y el porque quiere llamar la atención.
Ambas personas necesitan apoyo y a alguien que los escuche y hable con ellos sobre lo que necesiten contar.
Have you ever been taught to be emotionally intelligent or talked about mental health?
When I first heard about mental health I was already in medical classes, but my mother (unknowingly, I guess) since I was little gave me a lot of teachings to take care of my mental health.
When was the first time you felt anxiety or imbalance in your emotions?
To be honest, even as a child I suffered from anxiety. I remember when I was about 7 or 8 years old I felt happy, everything was going well, like every child's life I was naive to adult problems; one day my mother told me about the illness of a close aunt, like every mother she only tried to tell me that she was ill so as not to scare me and asked me to visit her, so on several occasions we went to her home, she lived near us. Weeks later her health worsened and she died of stomach cancer and for me it was chaos. For the first time I felt like I was drowning, my hands were shaking, my breathing quickened and anxiety set in.
Do you think the current media is carrying the right mental health message?
The internet can help us on many occasions, but only if it is used in the right way, and it can be a great means of communication that can guide us in many ways. However, there are many people today who use the media in the wrong way, which ends up hurting aspects of their lives.
While it is true that nowadays there is much more content harmful to mental health and access is easier, there are also campaigns that promote mental health care. It is an issue that has been gaining momentum over the last few years.
What has been your biggest contribution to your mental health?
I would say reading, reading fills me with joy and helps me feel better in times of pressure and anxiety, it distracts me from the world and often focuses me on what I want. Meditating also helps me a lot, relaxation exercises and focusing on my goals are things that help me think objectively. Forming a good routine that distracts me is a good way to have mental health and avoid negative and toxic thoughts.
If we had a person who was struggling with depression, anxiety or anything else that was affecting their mental health and on the other end was a person who said they were doing it for attention, what would you say to each?
For the person who truly has depression I would talk to them about the good things that have happened, support them and guide them with a different perspective on their problems so they can get out of their state. I would help her get into a routine that can help her get out of it.
To the person who does it just to get attention, I would advise her that she has nothing to gain from it. There are people who really feel that way and it's not a game. I would help her by giving opinions about solutions to her problems and why she wants attention.
Both people need support and someone to listen to them and talk to them about what they need to talk about.
