We have all witnessed how social relations have taken strong turns as a result of the containment measures taken by most governments in the face of the threat of Covid-19. Paid work has not been immune to these changes, rather it is at the center of the attention of millions of people seeking to adapt to new working conditions.
This is where teleworking comes in as a way of continuing to carry out work tasks at home. Employees who previously carried out their activity in the facilities of the company or institution, in commercial premises, workshops or private offices, have faced a kind of labor migration, where the work is carried out using information technologies (such as a computer with internet, telephones, webcams ...).
In my country, teleworking has been contemplated in the labor laws since 1996. It is curious, because one would associate this term with information technologies, as in fact it is currently paired. But teleworking in this context refers to the performance of work outside the physical space of the establishment that has hired the person. After all, the etymology of “Tele” means in ancient Greek “far away”.
In other words, in the 1950s when my maternal grandfather worked sewing shirt collars in the family home in Catia, together with his brothers and my great-grandmother, he was "teleworking". That branch of my family history traveled from the Venezuelan Andes to the capital, and they first settled in Catia, a popular parish where there is a culture of textile work, usually under outsourcing conditions.

For me, the most obvious problem in the exercise of telework is the imbalance in the reproduction of abusive relationships and labor exploitation, and on the other hand, the physical and psychological implications derived from difficulties in reconciling work and family life, from prolonged use of screens and the risks of social isolation.
A solid union seems to be lacking in this labor modality, and in general there is a lack of awareness of a clear policy regarding social security laws and regulations.
It is no secret to anyone that people have had to involuntarily accept this form of work, as there is no other option in the midst of the pandemic crisis and its social dimension, which incorporates the psychosocial effects of confinement, such as anxiety, fear and feelings of insecurity. In addition to the use of own resources and materials, including the payment of extra services derived from work activity in telework mode (this is a classic).
It is normal for people who exercise telework to neglect the physical activities necessary to counteract the effects of sedentary routines and poor body posture. Long hours in the chair, prolonged exposure to the screen, back pain and knee pain, does that sound familiar?
However, the advantages that teleworking has offered as a real alternative in the midst of a work system that sometimes does not respond to generational changes and the rapid positioning of information and communication technologies should not be underestimated. Potentialities that if they were well developed could contribute to a better performance of production processes and direct benefits to workers, achieving levels of economic independence and time management, which are often limited in the rigid structures of conventional working hours.
So teleworking, which may be novel for many people who have applied it to confinement measures, is not so for those who have been using this modality for years with their daily routine. This is very interesting because today the focus is on a practice that was seen by many as an “exotic”, but that has come to stay and diversify.

Teletrabajo ayer, hoy y siempre
Todos hemos sido testigos de cómo las relaciones sociales han dado fuertes virajes como resultado de las medidas de confinamiento tomadas por la mayoría de gobiernos ante la amenaza de la Covid-19. El ejercicio del trabajo remunerado no ha estado ajeno a estos cambios, más bien se encuentra en el centro de las atenciones de millones de personas que buscan adaptarse a nuevas condiciones laborales.
Aquí entra el teletrabajo como una forma de continuar la ejecución de las tareas laborales en casa. Empleados y empleadas que anteriormente ejercían su actividad en las instalaciones de la empresa o institución, en locales comerciales, talleres u oficinas particulares, se han enfrentado a una especie de migración laboral, donde el trabajo se realiza utilizando las tecnologías de la información (como una computadora con internet, teléfonos, cámaras web...).
En mi país, el teletrabajo está contemplado en las leyes laborales desde el año 1996 como “trabajo a domicilio”. Es curioso, porque uno asociaría este término a las tecnologías de la información, como de hecho está aparejado actualmente. Pero teletrabajo en este contexto se refiere a la realización del trabajo fuera del espacio físico del establecimiento que ha contratado a la persona Después de todo la etimología de “Tele” significa en el griego antiguo “lejos”.
Es decir, que ya en los años 50 cuando mi abuelo materno trabajaba cosiendo cuellos de camisas en la casa familiar de Catia, junto a sus hermanos y mi bisabuela, estaba "teletrabajando". Esa rama de mi historia familiar viajó desde los andes venezolanos hasta la capital, y se instalaron primeramente en esa zona popular donde hay cultura de trabajo textil, normalmente bajo condiciones de tercerización.
Aquí una foto de él que me parece guapísima, a tono con estas fotografías del libro "Fotografía Urbana Venezolana 1850-2009" una verdadera joya visual que me regaló mi cuñada. Las tomé con mi teléfono. Escogí algunos "teletrabajadores" y otros oficios laborales ;).
Para mí el problema más evidente en el ejercicio del teletrabajo es, por un lado, el desequilibrio latente en la reproducción de relaciones de abuso y explotación laboral, y por el otro, las implicaciones físicas y psicológicas derivadas de las dificultades para conciliar la vida laboral y familiar, del uso prolongado de pantallas y los riesgos de aislamiento social.
Pareciera faltar en esta modalidad laboral la unidad gremial, y en general hay desconocimiento de una política clara en cuanto a leyes y normativas de seguridad social.
Para nadie es un secreto que las personas han tenido que aceptar de manera involuntaria esta forma de trabajo, al no quedar otra opción en plena crisis de la pandemia y su dimensión social, que incorpora los propios efectos psicosociales del confinamiento, como ansiedad, miedo e inseguridad. Además de la utilización de recursos y materiales propios incluido el pago de servicios extras derivados de la actividad laboral en modo de teletrabajo (esto es un clásico).
Una constante en las personas que ejercen el teletrabajo es el descuido de las actividades físicas necesarias para contrarrestar los efectos de rutinas sedentarias y las malas posturas corporales. Muchas horas en la silla, exposición prolongada a la pantalla, dolor de espalda y de rodillas, ¿te suena?
Sin embargo, no hay que desestimar las ventajas que el teletrabajo ha ofrecido como una alternativa real en medio de un sistema laboral que a veces no responde a los cambios generacionales y al rápido posicionamiento de las tecnologías de la información y comunicación. Potencialidades que bien desarrolladas pudieran aportar a un mejor rendimiento de los procesos productivos y beneficios directos a los trabajadores, logrando niveles de independencia económica y de gestión de tiempo, que muchas veces están limitados en las rígidas estructuras de las jornadas laborales convencionales
Así que el teletrabajo, que puede resultar novedoso para muchas personas que lo han aplicado ante las medidas de confinamiento, no lo es para quienes tienen años con esta modalidad incorporada a su rutina diaria. Esto es muy interesante porque hoy el foco está puesto en una práctica que era vista por muchos como un “exotismo”, pero que ha llegado para quedarse y diversificarse.
