Amigos, no todo en estos días de aislamiento social, es recibir ese bombardeo de información estresante y triste, sobre los efectos del Covid-19. O en el caso, de los que tenemos hijos en edad escolar, hablar, de las cada vez más creativas, tareas y actividades escolares, de eso hablaremos luego. Aprovechando que hoy, 22 de abril, celebramos el Día de la Tierra, vengo relajada, a hablarle de una de esas cosas lindas, que nos regala nuestro amado planeta. Que les parece, les compartiré unas tomas que realice, de las lindas flores, de una de mis plantas de orquídeas. Se trata, de una Cattleya Trianae, y por supuesto, cómo los tengo acostumbrados, además, compartiré con ustedes, unos cuantos datos interesantes sobre esta planta hermosa.

Today, April 22, we celebrate Earth Day, so I come here relaxed, to talk about one of those beautiful things that our beloved planet gives us. What do you think, I will share with you some shots I took of the beautiful flowers, of one of my orchid plants. It is a Cattleya Trianae, and of course, as I have them accustomed, also, I will share with you, a few interesting facts about this beautiful plant.
Iniciaré, contándoles un poco, sobre como llego esta hermosa planta a mi pequeño jardín. Resulta, que, como la mayoría de mis plantas, es un obsequio, en este caso, de parte de la tía de mi esposo. Ella vive en la ciudad de Puerto Ordaz, estado Bolívar, y cuando viene de visita, algunas veces nos trae alguna orquídea. Cuando llego a casa esta Cattleya, era una planta que aun no se había desarrollado, digamos, que era una planta bebe, jajaja. Le costo un poco adaptarse, y su desarrollo fue realmente, bastante lento. Sus primeras inflorescencias, si no me equivoco, emergieron 4 años después de su llegada a casa. Si amigos, con las orquídeas hay que armarse de paciencia, para ver el fruto, de los continuos cuidados. Incluso, en algunas ocasiones, (más de las que se desearían), después de tanto esfuerzo y cuidado, no logran adaptarse y mueren.
I'll start by telling you a little about how this beautiful plant came to be in my little garden. It turns out, like most of my plants, it is a gift, in this case, from my husband's aunt. She lives in the city of Puerto Ordaz, Bolivar state, and when she comes to visit, she sometimes brings us some orchids. When she came home this Cattleya, it was a plant that had not yet developed, let's say, it was a baby plant, hahaha. It took a little while for it to adapt, and its development was really, really slow. Her first inflorescences, if I'm not mistaken, emerged 4 years after her arrival home. Yes, friends, with orchids you have to be patient to see the fruit of continuous care. Even, on some occasions, (more than you would wish), after so much effort and care, they do not manage to adapt and die.
Resulta, que mientras investigaba, descubrí que es una planta muy común entre los cultivadores, por su facilidad para cultivarla. Imagino, que esa característica, fue la que le permitió adaptarse, finalmente en mi jardín. Tomando en cuenta, vivo en una zona muy calurosa y seca, esas condiciones, no son las más adecuadas, para el cultivo de esta especie de orquídea, nativa de Colombia. Es más, les cuento que la Cattleya Trianae, es la flor nacional nuestro vecino país, Colombia, desde noviembre de 1936. Entre los colombianos, se le conoce popularmente por los nombres de Flor de Mayo o Lirio de Mayo. Atribuyéndose este nombre, a que su período de inflorescencia se da entre los meses de abril y mayo. Aunque debo confesarles, en el caso de mi jardín, no siempre sucede así, algunos años, se ha atrasado o adelantado. Incluso, en algunas ocasiones, nos ha premiado floreciendo dos veces al año. Una en el primer trimestre y luego en el tercer trimestre del año.
As it turns out, while researching, I discovered that it is a very common plant among growers, because of its ease of cultivation. I imagine that this characteristic allowed it to adapt to my garden. Taking into account that I live in a very hot and dry area, those conditions are not the most suitable for the cultivation of this species of orchid, native to Colombia. Moreover, I tell you that the Cattleya Trianae, is the national flower of our neighboring country, Colombia, since November 1936. Among Colombians, it is popularly known by the names of Mayflower or Maylily. This name is attributed to the fact that its inflorescence period is between the months of April and May. Although I must confess, in the case of my garden, this is not always the case. It has even, on some occasions, rewarded us by blooming twice a year. Once in the first quarter and then in the third quarter of the year.
Este tipo de orquídeas, caracterizadas por ser epífitas y de hojas carnosas, agrupa una gran diversidad de colores y formas. Su gama de color, recorre desde los blancos más puros, pasando, por la escala de los rosas y lilas, hasta alcanzar incluso colores muy intensos y oscuros. Tristemente, a pesar, de su facilidad de cultivo, debido a la destrucción de su hábitat natural, esta hermosa flor corre peligro de extinguirse. Pese a los esfuerzos que se están haciendo para evitarlo, el problema es, que si no desarrollamos nuestra conciencia ecológica. Y nos empeñamos en seguir destruyendo todo lo que se interpone en nuestro camino, en nuestro eterno afán de dominar la naturaleza. Terminaremos finalmente destruyéndola, encontrando nosotros mismos, nuestro fin como especie junto a ella. Así que, todos nosotros deberíamos aprovechar esta situación coyuntural, para reflexionar sobre nuestro proceder hasta ahora. Analizar, si en correcto, el cómo nos hemos venido relacionando e interactuando con ese mundo que nos rodea. Recuerden, el planeta tierra es nuestro único y gran hogar.

This type of orchids, characterized by being epiphytic and having fleshy leaves, groups a great diversity of colors and forms. Its range of colors goes from the purest whites, through the scale of roses and lilacs, to even very intense and dark colours. Sadly, despite its ease of cultivation, due to the destruction of its natural habitat, this beautiful flower is in danger of becoming extinct. Despite the efforts being made to prevent this, the problem is, if we do not develop our ecological awareness. And we are determined to continue destroying everything that stands in our way, in our eternal quest to dominate nature. We will finally end up destroying it, finding ourselves, our end as a species with it. So, we should all take advantage of this situation to reflect on our actions so far. Analyze, if correct, how we have been relating and interacting with the world around us. Remember, planet Earth is our one and only home.
