The task of getting socks organized
When holes appear in socks and the holes are big enough for the socks to be used for puppetry.
When you know your socks are full of lint but think they have cute blue and green stripes, are in fairly good condition and then… you discover a “cute” hole.
Introduction:
The article you are about to read is a true story and true reflection of life with socks for the author and her family. If you are reading this and you have never had problems with socks, please refrain from acting like a snob. That would be unkind. Should you see the author and or any of her family members, as much as you can, avoid looking down at their feet. Violating this rule could result in you viewing images similar to the ones above and could also result in you judging them falsely. They simply need help.
If like this author, you too have socks issues, please don’t take this article too seriously, laugh if you can and be encouraged to get your socks sorted.
Socks to be sorted(how fun👀)
If someone told me ten years ago that I’d be writing an article about socks on Peakd today, I’d have asked, “What’s Peakd?” and would have said,”Me? Socks? Nah…some other topic”. I would have probably also said, “Shut up”. Well…here I am in fall, October 2022, on Peakd, writing about socks.
I wondered if there is a socks community. Is there? Hmm…it’s not that I have nothing else to do but write about socks. It’s also not that I haven’t considered doing a course in socks management(let me know if you know of one being offered). Yes, I’m a busy individual and yes, I’d rather spend some time investing in STOCKS but the truth is, I have really invested a lot in SOCKS. I can’t say I’ve seen returns on investment and by the way, I would like to know whose idea it was that pairs of socks should match. Why? Just Why? I know that mismatching is also a trend but unfortunately, it’s difficult for some of us to do that without even sub-consciously thinking about matching.
Though I’ve mentioned it, matching or trying to find matching socks is just one issue. We have many socks in my house, many types, many colors, many sizes. The problem is, we just often can’t find them. Are the socks deliberately hiding? Was it the intention of socks inventors to help annoy people like me? I don’t want this post to come off as a rant so forgive me if it does. But as you see in the title above,I have socks problems. Actually, I have general laundry problems but let’s stick to socks.😂😂
These are examples of socks that come in sets. When some of them get holes or go missing, I decide what becomes a pair and roll my eyes at whoever thinks that pairs should totally match.(This is when I’m patient enough to get close to matching. They’re are days when any two goes)
In warmer months when my kids fuss about finding socks, I say, “Just wear your slippers!”
Camp Time
Now, you might wonder what it is that inspired me to write this post? I recently had to prepare my kids for a camp. I looked at the list of things they should have packed. It was a long list but what really stood out is that they each needed four pairs of socks.
This is how I was able to diagnose the kind of problem I’ve got. They were so many other items on the list. There were even items that I wasn’t too clear about but, the items that bothered me were “SOCKS”. Clearly my kids’ teachers don’t understand the socks dilemma at my house (well, I hope they don’t) Lol! Often times, we want to hit the road, the kids are 99% ready but just can’t find socks. Often times too, you’ll hear us asking each other, “Have you seen my socks?” I’m at the point now where I really don’t even like that question. It’s become too personal.😂😂 Ask me anything else.
I told my kids that they are responsible for their socks, that mommy won’t be buying any more nor will she be sorting.
Though I said that, again I found myself emptying, sorting, re-organizing all drawers, locating as many socks as I could and then finding “pairs” of them. This took a day! Was it my second time doing this? No!! Third time? Absolutely not! I’ve done it on numerous occasions with and without family members. I’ve been creative with it by using a timer and have family members find as many socks as they could within a particular time frame. I’ve awarded the person who found the most. I’ve bought socks that I think we’d have no problems locating. Put it this way, I’ve tried many methods. The most successful method is time consuming but gives me peace for at least two weeks. 😃
Best Method (so far)
As I mentioned above, I have tried several methods in an effort to be able to locate and keep socks together. I’ve tried character socks (chose some of the kids favorite characters), socks with messages, just black socks,(one shade where any two goes), bright colored socks, socks from friends(should be special and easily located but not exactly so). We’ve tied socks to keep them together but usually untie them to get them washed. Whatever the method, they sometimes just “disappear”.
Clothes pin hanger used to keep socks sorted
My most successful method has been to search for and gather all clean socks, find as many pairs as I can and pin them on a clothes pin hanger (as seen above). I keep the socks that way so that when family members habitually ask for socks, I just direct them to the hanger. This gives me peace.
Ideally, it’s good to maintain this order, but it’s been challenging to do so so every now and then we have to re-do this method.
Do you have socks problems?
What sorting methods work best for you? Please help me. I don’t want to just accept my problem. I want to solve it. 😜
Socks Challenge! (Win 2 Hives)
Anyone can participate in this challenge. The first person to guess the number of pairs that were sorted on the clothes pin hanger will win 2 hives. Entries close after 6 days.
