Castle of the Moon + Slay the Spire, Ideas and Thoughts for the Game

Greetings my friends

These days I stumbled upon three really cool posts by @edicted here on PeakD, and even left a comment through my account @wlffreitas. He talked about an idea called Castle of the Moon, a game he's envisioning, and honestly, it got me hooked. Especially because he not only talked about nostalgia, reminiscing about the first Final Fantasy, but also brought up new and very creative ideas that could become a super fun game.

The first thing that caught my attention was when he started talking about the original Final Fantasy. I don't know if you've ever played it, but it's that hardcore RPG where you chose your classes at the start and had to stick with them till the end. And he analyzed how the game was kind of broken in some aspects, like the mages that didn’t have mana and the fighters that were practically walking gods (like in any other game, I guess). But there were also very cool things, like the class evolutions and the hidden mechanics, which you hardly see anymore.

In the second post, he started talking about the idea of interesting class evolutions, and that's what really got me.

He came up with several starter classes that can evolve in different ways. Like the Fighter who can become a Knight or a Berserker. The Thief who can become an Engineer or an Assassin. And even the Red Mage who remains that wild card that does a bit of everything. I thought that was really cool because it gives the player freedom to follow the path they enjoy the most during the gameplay.

Where am I going with this?

Well, what if I made something in the old-school style, but in my own way?

What really matters to me is the idea of making something fun, fast-paced, and addictive. And then I thought of the game Slay the Spire. For those who don’t know, it’s a card-based roguelike RPG, where you climb a tower, face enemies, and improve your deck along the way.

It’s fast, but also has RPG depth.

You feel like every decision matters, but without the drag of a turn-based RPG.

So, I decided to mix this class evolution idea from @edicted with the gameplay style of Slay the Spire. Imagine that you start as a no-class character, like a beginner hero. And throughout the run, as you pick up cards, make decisions, and choose paths, your character starts to take shape. Want to play more aggressively? Then start picking attack, strength, rage cards, and by the end you become a Berserker (Not necessarily, of course.). Prefer to play more tactically, full of traps and gadgets? Pick up cards of that style, and you become an Engineer or something like that.

Of course, for these vocations, you’d need to first start out as a Warrior or Thief.

The coolest thing is that it wouldn’t be a choice at the start of the game.

There would be no choose your class at the initial menu.

It would be a natural process, based on your decisions throughout the journey. This brings a bit of the tabletop RPG feel, like D&D, where your character takes form over time, according to your actions.

Let’s get off the page a little

Credits to the Placeholders used to test mechanics and functionalities go to the games Slay the Spire and Duelyst. Even though the final art in my mind doesn’t stray far from that style, I think it’s clean and direct.

Currently using the game engine Godot, mixing a bit of GDScript with C#.

My idea is that although it's based on Slay’s gameplay, it shouldn't be just another simple copy of the original. I want to add more RPG elements to the game itself. Without becoming a quick dungeon-clearing game based on luck. Imagine that besides the core game mechanic, we also have direct choices across a vast map, like becoming a totally passive player (And why not, add a Pacifist achievement to that?). I’ve prepared a full document for this, but I think it would be better organized as a link rather than just a post.

So I’ll leave that for the future, of course. I don’t like to share a notepad dump.

There are still a few ideas clashing, like whether or not to add a party for the player to control. In that case, it would also take away from the idea of starting without a defined vocation. Since it would become exhausting to organize a deck for each character. And that’s exactly not my focus here.

Of course, open to suggestions, and this is not a “final” list, it’s just a general base of what’s already prepared for this. Saudações meus amigos

Esses dias eu acabei esbarrando em três postagens muito legais do @edicted aqui no PeakD, até mesmo comentei através da minha conta @wlffreitas. Ele falou sobre uma ideia chamada Castle of the Moon, um jogo que ele está idealizando, e sinceramente, me pegou de jeito. Principalmente porque ele não só falou de nostalgia, relembrando o primeiro Final Fantasy, como também trouxe ideias novas e muito criativas que poderiam virar um jogo super divertido.

A primeira coisa que me chamou atenção foi quando ele começou a falar sobre o Final Fantasy original. Não sei se vocês já jogaram, mas é aquele RPG raiz, onde você escolhia suas classes no início e tinha que se virar com isso até o fim. E ele analisou como o jogo era meio quebrado em alguns pontos, tipo os magos que não tinham mana e os lutadores que eram praticamente deuses ambulantes (Como qualquer outro jogo eu acho). Mas também teve coisas bem legais, como as evoluções de classe e as mecânicas escondidas, que hoje em dia quase não se vê mais.

Na segunda postagem, ele começou a falar da ideia de evoluções de classe interessantes, aonde foi o que realmente me fisgou.

Ele pensou em várias classes iniciais que podem evoluir de formas diferentes. Tipo o Lutador que pode virar um Cavaleiro ou um Berserker. O Ladrão que pode virar um Engenheiro ou um Assassino. E até o Mago Vermelho que continua sendo aquele coringa que faz um pouco de tudo. Achei isso muito legal, porque dá liberdade pro jogador seguir o caminho que mais curte durante a jogatina.

Onde quero chegar com isso?

Bom, e se eu fizesse aos moldes antigos, mas do meu jeito?

O que me importa mesmo é a ideia de fazer algo divertido, rápido e viciante. E aí me veio na cabeça o jogo Slay the Spire. Pra quem não conhece, é um jogo de cartas/rpg roguelike, onde você vai subindo uma torre, enfrentando inimigos e melhorando seu deck ao longo do caminho.

Ele é rápido, mas também tem profundidade no rpg.

Você sente que cada decisão importa, mas sem aquele peso de um RPG cheio de turnos arrastados.

Então, decidi misturar essa ideia de evolução de classe dessa ideia de @edicted com o estilo de jogo do Slay the Spire. Imagina só que você começa como um sem classe, tipo um herói iniciante. E ao longo da partida, conforme vai pegando cartas, tomando decisões e escolhendo caminhos, seu personagem vai se moldando. Quer jogar mais agressivo? Vai pegando cartas de ataque, de força, de fúria, e no final você acaba se tornando um Berserker (Não obrigatoriamente é claro.). Prefere jogar mais tático, cheio de armadilhas e engenhocas? Vai pegando cartas com esse estilo, e você vira um Engenheiro ou algo assim.

É claro que para essas vocações, seria necessário ele primeiro começar do inicio, como Warrior ou Thief.

O mais legal é que não seria uma escolha no começo do jogo.

Não teria aquele escolha sua classe logo no menu inicial.

Seria um processo natural, baseado nas suas escolhas durante a jornada. Isso traz um pouco da sensação de RPG de mesa, tipo D&D, onde seu personagem vai ganhando forma com o tempo, de acordo com suas ações.

Vamos sair um pouco do papel

Créditos para os Placeholders utilizados para testar as mecânicas e funcionalidades ao próprio jogo Slay the Spire, e Duelyst. Embora a arte final, em meu pensamento não fuja totalmente desse padrão, eu acho bonito e direto.

Atualmente utilizando a game-engine Godot, misturando um pouco de GDScript com C#.

Minha ideia que embora seja baseado na jogabilidade de Slay, ele não seja mais uma copia simples do original. Eu quero adicionar mais elementos RPG ao jogo em si. Sem se tornar um jogo rápido de completar masmorras baseados em sorte. Imagine que além dessa mêcanica de jogo central, também teremos escolhas diretas pelo vasto mapa, como se tornar um jogador totalmente passivo (E porque não, adicionar uma conquista Pacífico a isso?). Eu preparei um documento completo para isso, mas acho que ficaria melhor organizado em forma de link em vez de uma simples postagem.

Então deixarei isso para o futuro é claro. Eu não gosto de compartilhar um bloco de notas.

Ainda a algumas ideias entrando em conflito, como se adicionar ou não um grupo para o jogador comandar, no caso, isso também me tiraria a ideia de começar sem uma vocação propriamente dita. Já que isso se tornaria exaustivo organizar cada Deck para cada personagem. E esse exatamente não é o meu foco aqui.
