He has worked there for a long time and, in a way, has grown accustomed to the European lifestyle. However, every year he returns to Bolivia for a few months to enjoy some peaceful time with us. This month that he spent with us was very special: we celebrated Christmas and New Year’s together. They were wonderful moments, especially since my father is a top-notch chef, and all his dishes turned out delicious. During this month, he dedicated himself to helping my wife and me with some household tasks, like fixing the water installation, and he also gave me driving tips, as I’m still learning to drive. Time flew by so quickly, and now he’s leaving. Although it’s sad, I’ll look forward to his return in September.
Ha trabajado allí durante mucho tiempo y, de alguna manera, se acostumbró al estilo de vida europeo. Sin embargo, cada año regresa a Bolivia por unos meses para disfrutar de un tiempo de paz con nosotros. Este mes que nos acompañó fue muy especial: pasamos juntos la Navidad y el Año Nuevo. Fueron momentos muy gratos, ya que mi padre es un chef de primera y todos sus platos quedaban deliciosos. Durante este mes, se dedicó a ayudarnos a mi esposa y a mí en algunas tareas de la casa, como la instalación de agua, y también me dio consejos para conducir, ya que estoy aprendiendo a manejar. El tiempo pasó tan rápido que ahora se va, y aunque es triste, esperaré con ilusión su regreso en septiembre.
The day before his departure, my father asked us to accompany him to the airport. Of course, I gladly accepted and told him I’d go with my wife. However, things didn’t go entirely as planned. He told me his flight was at 7 a.m., so I assumed we should leave home around 5:30 to arrive early. The next day, I woke up in a panic because it was already 5:40, and I wasn’t ready. I left the house in a rush and, since it was still dark, I took the bus to the airport. When I arrived, I noticed the airport staff was just starting their shift. I waited for my father without having breakfast, but time passed, and he didn’t show up. I waited until 10:30, and finally, worried and bored, I decided to call him. While waiting, I witnessed a taxi driver trying to overcharge a man who seemed European (perhaps Spanish, judging by his accent). It’s no secret that here in Santa Cruz, many taxi drivers take advantage of foreigners. I advised the man to request an Uber instead of accepting the inflated price, and he listened. Although I earned the foreigner’s gratitude, I also got a glare of hatred from the taxi driver.
Un día antes de su partida, mi padre me pidió que lo acompañáramos al aeropuerto. Por supuesto, acepté con gusto y le dije que iría con mi esposa. Sin embargo, las cosas no salieron del todo bien. Él me dijo que su vuelo salía a las 7 de la mañana, así que supuse que debíamos salir de casa alrededor de las 5:30 para llegar temprano. Al día siguiente, me desperté asustado porque ya eran las 5:40 y no tenía nada listo. Salí de casa como pude y, como aún no había mucha luz, tomé el bus que va al aeropuerto. Al llegar, noté que los trabajadores del aeropuerto recién estaban preparándose para su jornada. Esperé a mi padre sin desayunar, pero el tiempo pasaba y no llegaba. Estuve esperando hasta las 10:30, y al final, preocupado y aburrido, decidí llamarle. Mientras esperaba, presencié cómo un taxista intentaba engañar a un señor que parecía europeo (quizás español por su acento). No es ningún secreto que aquí en Santa Cruz muchos taxistas aprovechan para cobrar de más a los extranjeros. Le aconsejé al señor que pidiera un Uber en lugar de aceptar el precio abusivo, y él me hizo caso. Aunque gané el agradecimiento del extranjero, también me gané la mirada de odio del taxista.
Finally, my siblings and my father arrived. We chatted for a while, had breakfast together, and said our goodbyes. It was a beautiful but sad moment because I had already grown used to having him here at home, in my city. He told me he’d return in six months for a wedding, and I hope he does. I wished him a safe trip and told him to take care. It’s hard to say goodbye to someone so dear.
Finalmente, llegaron mis hermanos y mi padre. Charlamos un rato, desayunamos juntos y nos despedimos. Fue un momento bonito pero triste, porque ya me había acostumbrado a tenerlo aquí en mi casa, en mi ciudad. Me dijo que regresaría en seis meses para celebrar una boda, y espero que así sea. Le deseé un viaje tranquilo y que se cuidara mucho. Es difícil separarse de alguien tan querido.
