Without construction workers, no building can stand. Without construction workers, bridges would be impossible to build. Without construction workers, all major terminals and ports would not be possible. Without construction workers, our roads would not look smooth. No matter how smart Architects are, they would be bullshit without them all. It is better to have only 1 engineer but have 100 skilled workers than to have 100 engineers and 1 laborer.
The workers, they are the ones who are really struggling to build this country. From big cities to remote areas, everything is there. Without saying too much, without demanding much of this from the government, without making demonstrations everywhere, without crying over his fate. They continue to work day and night according to their competence. Rarely complain, work, work and work. Because for them time is money, not working is clearly unpaid.
What is the real life of construction workers, here's a little picture. These workers are usually coordinated directly by their foremen. These foremen have a direct relationship with the contractor. So, if there is a project, the contractor will contact the foreman who is used to working with them. Between the contractors there is an agreement on the price of the work and how many workers must be prepared.
Payments are usually in volume units (wholesale), so it is what the foreman earns that is paid to the contractor. After the deal, the foreman gathered the workers. Usually the foreman takes the laborer who comes from the same area where they live and can be in the same village.
Regarding labor wages, of course, it does not refer to all the regulations that are often voiced by the government and labor unions. Payments from the foreman to the workers that are often used are the daily method, ranging from Rp. 100,000,- per day (kenek), Rp. 125,000, - (Tukang), Rp. 150,000, - (Head of Tukang). So for them there is no UMR and UMP.
Ranging From
Tukang | 1Day | IDR 150.000 | $ 0.011
Kernek | 1 Day | IDR 125.000 | $ 0.0084
How about working overtime? Normal work for them is from 8 am to 4 pm (counts 1 day) if overtime until 6 pm will be counted as 1.5 days and if it is 10 o'clock it will be counted as 2 days. If due to urgent circumstances, they must also be ready to work one full day (24 hours) and they will be paid for 4 working days. Is it possible that the condition is possible. Especially the foundry work where the car traffic is more heavy at night before dawn.
How do they live while working in the city? Is there a mess? Are there flats or apartments? Of course not, they will live around the project area, the workers' barracks/beds are where they live. How's the condition? The condition is as long as it doesn't leak when it rains, it can be used as a bed, and there is a bathroom. It's that simple. Other facilities? Barely any or bring your own.
How do they eat? Do they cook themselves? Or are they catering? No !. they usually eat at the stalls in the project. These stalls are deliberately held by the contractor in collaboration with outside parties. These workers eat 3 times a day at this shop. Every time they eat and drink, they are recorded (they are in debt) then on the day of payment it is the foremen who cover their debt. After deducting the debt to the shop, the workers receive their net salary. So if for example at that time there was no work/project? Are they paid by the contractor/foreman? Of course not. They are mostly seasonal workers. Maybe if the foreman is older and judges the ability of his men to be good. So when there is no job, the foreman can only pay them perfunctory (½ of their income) on average when they work. The rest, these workers will return to being farmers in the village while waiting for new job opportunities.
What about health insurance and old age insurance? Isn't this what the government hears the most? Labor protection? For health insurance in this case is a work safety guarantee, the contractor is actually obliged to insure all parties involved in the construction project. Even though it has become an obligation, there are still many loopholes and reasons used to violate this. A small example of how contractors have to take care of every worker if every week people change their work. If the old age guarantee, of course there is no. The workers themselves have to think about their own destiny.
From the little description above about construction workers. We should thank them. They are the ones who are actually struggling to build this country. By leaving the family in the village, it can be months without coming home. Plus the risk of accidents at work. Although sometimes their presence seems forgotten. Especially during the inauguration or signing of the inscription. They were definitely not the ones invited to attend.
