No cabe duda que este 2020 ha sido maratónico y se han visto afectados muchos sectores a nivel mundial. Los sectores más afectados han sido por obvias razones la salud y la economía. Sin embargo, sería un tanto intransigente de mi parte si me enfocara solamente a esos sectores y no tomara en cuenta a la educación.
There is no doubt that this 2020 has been a marathon, and many sectors have been affected worldwide. The areas most affected have been the health and the economy, for obvious reasons. However, it would be somewhat stubborn about focusing only on those sectors and not take education into account.
Cuando hablamos de un docente, siempre lo relacionamos a una persona que está en un espacio físico finito llamado aula, con paredes adornadas, mesabancos rayados y pizarrón desgastado, impartiendo clases a niños, jóvenes o adultos, con una relación frente a frente. Sin embargo, desde marzo de forma tajante todo esto fue trastocado.
When we talk about a teacher, we always relate it to a person who is in a finite physical space called a classroom, with ornate walls, scratched benches and a worn blackboard, teaching children, young people or adults, with a face-to-face relationship. However, from March onwards, all this was overturned.
El cierre de las escuelas nos hizo pasar de aquella aula física a la nueva, fría, desconcertante e incierta "aula virtual". Al principio sinceramente pensaba que no sería una tarea tan difícil, porque aseguraba que los estudiantes estaban acostumbrados a la tecnología, error total, lo único que sabían realmente era usar las aplicaciones de redes sociales. Por lo que hacerlos usar con eficiencia las herramientas educativas que utilizaríamos para las clases fue algo complicado.
The schools' closing made us go from that physical classroom to the new, cold, baffling, and uncertain "virtual classroom". At first, I honestly thought that it would not be such a difficult task because it ensured that the students were used to technology and total error. The only thing they really knew was using social media applications. So making them use the educational tools that we would use for classes efficiently was somewhat complicated.
Por mi parte, siempre he sido una persona a la cual le gusta mucho siempre estar actualizado con respecto a la tecnología, por lo cual no batallé en acostumbrarme a las nuevas herramientas que utilizaría. Además, en una de las instituciones donde laboro, nos proporcionaron durante una semana cursos intensivos sobre como utilizar herramientas educativas y como llevar a cabo nuestra labor docente a distancia. En este lapso de tiempo obtuve información por parte de muchas fuentes y me armé mi "kit de docencia", me sentía listo para mi labor, pero claro, existía ese temor e incertidumbre de sí realmente podría transmitir los conocimientos a mis alumnos.
For my part, I have always been a person who still likes to be up-to-date concerning technology, so I did not struggle to get used to the new tools that I would use. In one of the institutions where I work, they provided us with intensive courses for a week on how to use educational tools and how to carry out our teaching work at a distance. In this time, I obtained information from many sources, and I put together my "teaching kit", I felt ready for my work, but of course, there was that fear and uncertainty of whether I could really transmit the knowledge to my students.
El primer día llegó, abrí Google meet (para los de bachilleraro), Zoom (para los de licenciatura), inicié la aplicación liveboard (pizarra digital) y comencé mi clase. Me sentí vacío en cierta forma, porque sentía que le hablaba a la nada, solo unos cuantos alumnos participaban, los demás apagaban su cámara para no hacer contacto y preguntarles. Realizaban otras cosas ajenas a la clase, era toda una sensación extraña y en cierta forma triste.
The first day came, I opened Google meet (for high school students), Zoom (for undergraduates), started the liveboard application and started my class. I felt empty in a way because I thought that I was talking to nothing, only a few students participated, the others turned off their camera to make no contact and asked them. They did other things outside the class; it was all a strange feeling and, in a certain way, a sad way.
El tiempo fue pasando y me fui acostumbrando a la nueva forma de trabajar, cada vez mis clases se asemejaban a la forma presencial, aunque no viera el rostro de mis alumnos. La interacción aumentaba cada día, la relación estudiante-docente se fortalecía y veía un mejor aprovechamiento en mis alumnos, obviamente, no todo fue de esta forma. Por otro lado, quedó expuesto y evidenciado que algunos alumnos presentaban desde tiempo atrás carencias educativas, tecnológicas y económicas. Esta pandemia provocó que desertaran y dejaran de lado sus estudios para trabajar y poder sobrevivir. Espero hayan conseguido trabajo.
The time passed, and I was getting used to the new way of working, each time my classes were similar to the face-to-face way, although I did not see the face of my students. The interaction increased every day, the student-teacher relationship grew more energetic, and I saw better use in my students. Obviously, not everything was this way. On the other hand, it was exposed and evidenced that some students had educational, technological, and economic deficiencies for a long time. This pandemic caused them to drop out and put aside their studies to work and survive. I hope they got a job.
Hoy estoy a una semana de iniciar un nuevo semestre, la institución preparó una semana intensiva de cursos, para reforzar muchos aspectos de la docencia. Espero que con la experiencia obtenida en estos meses previos, tanto por mis alumnos y su servidor hagan que esto fluya mejor que el semestre pasado y se obtenga un aprovechamiento de excelencia.
Today I am one week away from starting a new semester, the institution prepared an intensive week of courses to reinforce many aspects of teaching. I hope that with the experience gained in these previous months, both by my students and their server, I will flow better than last semester and obtain excellent use.
