Recently I had the very good fortune to visit a joint exhibition of some of the works of H.R. Giger, courtesy of his estate, and Sorayama Hajime in Osaka. Even more fortunate: the gallery specifically allows photography of the exhibits! Which is great as I'm not planning to visit the Giger museum in Switzerland in the near future. I have heard it is quite the experience though!
Most people are familiar with H.R. Giger and his most famous work designing the xenomorph and various architecture from the "Alien" series of movies. My favourite is "Aliens" the second movie, which do you prefer?
Seeing it up-close was great. The most disturbing part for me wasn't it's claws or skeletal appearance but rather the sensual lips:
Giger's works are often called "biomechanical" and depict often cold relationships between the biological and machine worlds.
This work called "Birth Machine " is a comment on how he saw humanity:
Which runs quite close to how the xenomorph is depicted in the movies! Depending on how my day is going, I sometimes agree!
I think the title for this was "Biomechanoid"
I do like how Hive is able to display tall images!
I'll leave a teaser for the next post which will feature a different yet complimentary vision of biological/machine relationships from the artist Sorayama:
Comments and discussion are most welcome!
