Potatoes is a common and favourite vegetable for many people. Available round the year, they were farmed during the winter season. My parents says, that growing potatoes is considered to be relatively easy, making them a great choice for beginner gardeners. Looking at some of the growing buds at home, I am assured they were quite right.
Potatoes produce a large harvest with minimal care once planted, and are considered one of the simplest vegetables to grow at home. No matter how carefully we store our potatoes, once they reach the end of their dormancy period, they are going to start sprouting. This is what I found in my kitchen.
Almost all the potatoes began to sprout. They grow pink in color. On closer look they appeara to be very creepy, but I think there is a life. The budding sprouts were ready to sow in mud. On finding them, I atarted clicking as closely as possible.
There is a science involved too, and I think I will cover them in my next year syllabus. However, I have extracted few details.
Potatoes develop roots when they are exposed to warm temperatures and moisture because they are actually modified stems (tubers) with dormant buds called "eyes" that naturally sprout and grow roots when conditions are favorable. These potatoes are trying to produce a new plant from the stored food within the potato. Sprouts are a sign that the potato is actively converting stored starches into sugar and the other nutrients the potato needs to grow a new crop. This is especially likely to happen if a potato is stored for too long in a warm environment.
Well there are too much of study. My mom cut these potatoes to include in todays vegetable, by removing those creepy sprouts.
